I had a boss that would go into the fridge and take whatever he wanted regardless if it was in a container or not. Irked the hell out of me because not only was it stealing, I didn't have anything to eat for lunch! I asked him about it one day and he flat out told me that it was his company, his fridge and I was his employee that he paid, so he would eat whatever he wanted. Yeah, he was a real peach and it didn't work there much longer after that. I don't know how you refrained from bringing in weird shit disguised as attractive food. It would have been too much for me to resist. Well...I do think that he got food poisoning from something that I brought and left it for too long. I went to clean out my spot in the fridge and the food was gone. I thought "oh well" and figured someone had done it for me. Later that afternoon, he developed raging diarrhea and had to go home. Not sure if it was my food, but I like to think it was, lol

I am not a germaphobe, but I am totally grossed out by the idea of stealing someone else's lunch. It's one thing if it's a lean cuisine in the freezer or something, but an unwrapped sandwich in a container? I'm sure there's nothing weird about you, Annabella, but what if someone had eaten out of that container and not cleaned it before putting the sandwich in it? Yuck! I just can't even imagine helping myself to someone's fresh food or leftovers. I'm just totally grossed out by that. Thankfully, it has never happened where I work.

I agree with you I think it's totally gross to eat someone else's food, it could be leftovers that their fork touched. And yes I put my salad container in the work dishwasher and can't use it until it's run in a week. Now you have me thinking someone was sitting at their desk eating the sandwich out of my container. lol I looked in the kitchen trash cans which will filled and didn't see the sandwich in there.

IDK, people in the office are so weird! I hated sharing a fridge when I worked in one, because stuff was stolen all the time!

The mystery has been solved! A co-worker came up to me and apologized. She said she was being dumb and thought it was company Tupperware and was overflow.

Many years ago at the battery plant where my DH worked, they had a food thief. The thief would rifle through lunch boxes that had to be left in the break room(company rules). DH's co-worker and friend got tired of his lunch being eaten everyday. So he fixed a nice sandwich one day, full of an extremely HOT sauce. That day someone went home quite early, feeling sick, and lunches were never bothered again.

I don't know but I often wondered if stolen food tastes better.
I can remember how angry my dad was when my mom was in the hospital, very sick, dying. She wasn't eating much so he went and bought her a cup of Carvel ice cream which she enjoyed. For some reason she could not have it when he arrived so a nurse put it in the freezer on the floor and put her name and room number of the bag. Some piece of shit ate a treat meant for a dying woman. Who does something like that?

The only thing I can come up with is someone told someone else that they could go get a sandwich from the fridge, and the person assumed that the other sandwiches were for an event so they assumed the one the coworker told them to eat was the one in the container. Then they nicelely washed out the container. Or, when putzing in the fridger they knocked your container onto the floor, and it fell open or something so they dumped the food and washed out the container. That's all I've got. But I would be asking around, no doubt. Sounds plausible to me

The joys of a community refrigerator. We had food thieves at one place I worked. I literally starting writing my name in big letters and using tape to keep the dang thing shut. This meme always reminds me of that place. LOL I was thinking they took it because you forgot to put a note on it But really it's because some people are weird and selfish creatures

lainey that is exactly what came to my mind... oh, no, not the moist maker! Yeah, people are weird with the stealing food thing. I had someone steal my diet Pepsi out of the fridge. She must have dropped it taking it out because she dented it. BUT I saw it on top of a safe in our work area, so I asked her, "Hey, 'You', why did you take my Pepsi?" She quickly said, "Oh, no that's mine, I know because I dropped it when I bought it and it's dented." I lifted up to show her my initials that I had written in marker on the bottom and replied, " Oh, and you put my initials on the bottom, too?" Yep, busted.

I was an accidental food thief once to my very good friend at work. I used to bring in a Smart Ones lunch a couple times a week. DH used to do the grocery shopping and always picked out the same two favors for me (which were the only two I liked). I would grab one out of the freezer on the day I was packing without really paying attention to what I grabbed. One day I went to our department fridge, pulled out my Smart Ones and ate my lunch. Only I hadn't actually packed lunch that day. It was my coworkers and she was too nice to say anything when she discovered it was missing, I realized what I did later that day and asked around my small department to see if anyone was missing their lunch. I apologized and brought her in a new one the next day along with and her favorite candy bar as a mea culpa.
When our company moved HQ to a new building, we lost our department fridge and had to use the one in the kitchenette on our floor. So much got stolen from that fridge. I started bringing an insulated bag at that point.

I don't like my own food in a community fridge LOL, the smells, the rotting leftovers from others, etc. I can't imagine eating someone else's food.

I've worked in two small offices. Thankfully no food thieves in either one. Although someone stole one of my little rubbermaid containers at the first office. Grrr.. The second office there were a couple items left in the fridge for months (a yogurt & hot pockets) because no one could remember bringing them and no one wanted to eat something that didn't belong to them!
One time my boss had his son at the office. The kid was a senior in high school. He came and asked me if he could have a water from the fridge. I told him no that they belonged to individuals. No drinks supplied at this office. Plus people often refilled their water bottles from the tap and then put them in the fridge to get cold. He said "okay." A few minutes later I heard him cracking open a soda from the fridge.. Yeah, food thief in the making. He's probably eating a coworkers lunch right now. LOL

I started baking with my mom and grandmother when I was 3 and had to pull up a drawer to reach the counter. By 10 I was baking homemade goodies and selling them to friends and neighbors. My dad had a real estate office, and the workers there asked me to bring in individual snacks like brownies.
People started stealing my brownies. It got so bad that it wasn't worth my time to bake stuff, cut into individual portions and send them in with my dad.
The people that paid were really upset, and they figured out who was stealing. It was one guy. I was helping his wife, who was my dad's accountant, and I told my dad that it was weird that she was making me cut up hoards of scrap paper when I could write checks and do accounting stuff.
Turns out she was embezzling money. Both of them got fired and pretty much run out of town on a rail. The worst thing about them, according to their coworkers, were them stealing from a child.
They tried to justify it as it was my dad's supplies, so they were stealing from HIM, but I was doing this to earn extra money.
I still baked things for a couple of people at the office, but I stopped bringing stuff in. I'd only make $8 on a tray of brownies, so it wasn't worth it if somebody stole half my supply and didn't pay.

Why would someone take a sandwich that is clearly in someone's private container? To me it's just the oddest thing. lol because some people are rude and have absolutely no respect for other people's property. for the same reason my good pens disappear from my desk. some people just have no boundaries. they think anything in their sight is fair game.

That is very odd - especially since there were sandwiches left over. At least they didn't take your container.

I worked in an office with a very weird guy! Some of us took turns bringing in a couple dozen donuts and he would sneak donuts throughout the day and take them home after work. Everyone knew he was doing it and he thought he was so good at it! I love this picture from the work place fridge Attachments:

I had taken some lasagna to a company potluck lunch. After it was over, we all packed up whatever we brought to take home with us. Since I was living alone and knew that I would be the one eating my leftovers, I ate a bit as I was packing it up, using the same fork to eat and pack it.
Come closing time and my lasagna was gone! I was pissed, because that was my dinner. But then I started laughing at the fact that the lasagna had my spit residue in it since I ate a few bites as I packed it up.
I eventually found out who took it. He apologized. I asked why he would steal someone else's food. He didn't see it as stealing since it had been on the buffet table for a while. I told him if he dished a plate to take home while it was still on the buffet, that is acceptable. But going into the refrigerator and taking the whole container that clearly had my name on it was stealing.
He refused to see it that way. That is when I told him I had "slobbered all over it" (I wanted maximum gross factor conveyed) while packing it to take home.
His response? That's ok. You're a really clean person.
WTH?
He was lucky that it was a Costco frozen lasagna. If it had been my good, expensive-to-make own recipe, he would have been shot. But my homemade stuff is too good and too labor intensive to waste on an office potluck.
