When we go on vacation, when it is check out day we are up early, car packed, and on our way. DD went on vacation with friends. They checked out of their house at the last possible moment, then went to the beach. Dorked around there for hours and then when they finally get on the road they run into stop and go traffic and wind up staying overnight in a hotel. I am so aggravated. DD was supposed to work today, now she has to call in, lose her best day's pay. This same thing happened the last time, although that was a couple years ago when DD did not work, so there was really no consequences.
So, just curious ... Are we the weird ones?

We are with you - up early and on our way, or waiting for transfer to the airport.

Holy Mother of God, I'm a planner. Just reading the description of their "vacation" made me break out in flop sweats. I'd never be able to relax if I didn't know that everything was taken care of in advance.

We are planners for the most part. My dh's aunt and uncle are not. They are like what you described. They will leave for vacation and not even have a hotel reserved for part of their trip. I have traveled with them, and it gives me anxiety, however I know that if I choose to vacation with them I cannot complain because I know how they are.

Peabay, I'm with you. I plan and then plan some more. I am a veteran list-maker. Dh is of the same mind, though a bit more casual than I, but we usually try not to leave anything 'til the last minute. Sometimes I think I would be better off to let things go a bit, but a situation like the op mentions would drive me right over the edge!

I think more of "spontaneity within structure". With that said, I see the point of the people who don't want to "waste" the last day of beach on the road! But, unfortunately, getting back is part of the whole deal! We generally plan in a day between return and work ... but I'm self employed so it is a bit more flexible for me!

I used to plan to the nth degree but now we would check out of the hotel early and go sight seeing on the way to the airport. We aim to be at the airport within the check in time scales but if we are delayed unexpectedly it wouldn't bother either of us any more, we'd just get another flight. BUT that level of being laid back about it all comes from the stand that we are not inconveniencing anyone else or being disrespectful to an employer. Nor would we be running at the last minute expecting the plane to be delayed for us.
We don't plan much when we are away either. We usually go touring and have a rough idea of where we want to go but we can change our minds at the last minute.

I'm a planner when it comes to vacations. However, whether you are a planner or not, I think when you have someone else's kid with you, you should make every effort to get that kid home when you said you would. I would be mad too if I were you.

I'm a planner, but I wish I had more help. Dh has no clue into what goes into planning a trip and is no help at all!

I'm a huge planner for all the big details of a vacation - I spend considerable time finding a place to stay, figuring out how to get there & around, etc. And I look up reviews for places to eat and things to do, but I'm much more flexible about how the day goes.
One of my recurring stress dreams is not checking out of a hotel in time - that our stuff is strewn all over, I still need to take a shower, I can't find something, we're going to be charged a late fee. That would never happen in real life, though!

When I worked I planned out every detail. Now that DH and I are retired my planning is limited to making a list so I don't forget to pack anything and making sure the kennel can board the dogs for an extra day or two if needed.
On our first road trip with our car club we were given a spreadsheet. It detailed every minute up until dinner, after that we were free until the next day. DH and I couldn't wait to get in the car so we could bust out laughing. 8am start, 9:45am approx 90 miles 1st 15 min rest stop, etc. Believe me, I learned real fast to use the scheduled rest stops whether I needed it or not, there was no deviating from the schedule.

Another planner here. We even have checking out of a hotel down to a science; DH takes the luggage and one kid. I take the other; we check around the room for anything we may have left, get DH a cup of coffee from the breakfast bar and meet him at the car. That way only one child witnesses the swearing needed to pack the luggage in the trunk.

I'm a planner all the way!
I would be very upset if my dd wasn't home when the other family had said they would have her home, work missed or not. I don't think my dd would vacation with that other family again.

I'm ok with planning to a degree but at the same time my Dh will plan things to death and it just seems to suck all the fun out of it sometimes. He's good at it and I *know* it can prevent problems usually but just sometimes I'd love to have no plan. It's one of those weird and unusual times which brings out the worst in me and I find myself being deliberately obtuse or argumentative because I just want to grab a few clothes, our documents and go

To me, life is too short to stress by planning too much. Due to work my life is so very planned so on my own time I have a very, very basic agenda. Airline tickets, or sometimes reservations at a hotel if I am aware there may be issues finding a place to stay. Other than that, I am all for adventure.

I'd never be able to relax if I didn't know that everything was taken care of in advance. This! But, DH and I don't plan every activity for every minute of every day. We recently took a long weekend trip with 2 other couples. One of the hubbies planned everything and bought the tickets. That was fantastic, but we were exhausted by the end!

I'm a planner. To the max.
DH, on the other hand, is anti-planning anything.
It's been an adjustment and the result is that I've probably had to compromise more than he has - and to be honest, some of the most fun we have had on vacations has been unplanned.
He does have a fair respect for time, however, and it would be rare that his lack of planning would create a situation like that. Well, he might create a situation like that, but his solution would be to get a hotel, sleep for a few hours, and then leave at 2 or 3 a.m. in order to get me back home in time, allowing me to sleep in the car so that I was rested to go to work. In other words, it might happen, but he would find a way to slide in at the last minute and fix it.

I probably would have checked out late and hit a fun spot one last time. But kept an eye on time needed to complete the trip home. I might have gotten in late but I wouldn't have been so late I needed an extra night on the road. Is your dd sure the people she was traveling with intended to come home the same day she/you intended to be home? It was really disrespectful of them to get her home so late if they had agreed to the day/time to get her home. I wouldn't be traveling with them again.

A planner; in a lot of places, you can't get tickets to events, amusement parks etc. when you don't plan. It wasn't worth the hassle.
