It's looking like I am going to have to buy a new dryer pretty soon. Mine has been limping along for the last year and within the last few weeks it's gotten worse and worse. It's a hand me down from my parents and they bought it in 1994. I did one minor $50 repair to it in 2008. So my family has definitely gotten our money's worth out of it. But still.... the thought of dropping $500 on a dryer just fills me with dread. I can do it, I just don't want to. There are so many other more fun things I would rather spend money on!

I bet you could find one for less than $500, if you look around. But, yeah, I totally hate spending money on non-fun stuff too.

I felt the same way when I had to put new tires on my car. Yep, I had to do that in December. January was a car repair. Then earlier this month was shocks for the car. February was an electrician. It seems like I am out around $300-$500 every couple of months for boring stuff lately! I'm tired of it. I want to buy fun things!

I agree! I just spent $575 having the house and deck power washed. And another $300 on stain for the deck. And $1200 to take down two trees next to the house. Ugh. It looks nice, but I'd rather take a nice vacation.

Since I posted this thread the dryer has been working better. Maybe I can make it last at least another couple months!

I agree. Next weekend my car's having a new front axle, it will soon need new tires and looking at dh's car, his will need tires soon too.
I'm crazy frugal too, and never buy anything unless I either absolutely have to or it's on an amazing sale.

I totally agree! I hated spending the money on a new washer and dryer a couple weeks ago. Sometimes I don't like being a grown up!

Start looking now for a good deal or a clearance sale. When I had to buy a new dryer I found one on clearance at Sears for less than $250. It had a scratch on the side and no box but the warranty was the same as all the others. The scratch doesn't show and the box would have just gone out with the recycling so I see it as saving over $350 because the in the box models were around $600.
I hate spending money on those goofy things too, like a new furnace, new tires, new brakes. Yuck, I would much rather take a vacation or something.

I hate that too. I always go for the appliances with the least amount of bells and whistles, which the sales peeps don't like. Then once I buy a new appliance, another one "notices" and breaks down. Ugh. Good luck to you!

We just moved. We've been bleeding money for boring stuff for the past month during the selling/buying process. Next up, we get to spend our vacation money on gutters and sod! Oh, the excitement!

We're going to need to replace our furnace sooner than later, and that's a $5K hit! I also need to have radon mitigation done and I'm not looking forward to coughing up $1500 for that either.

Yeah, I hate it too.
We had a guy come out to do measurements and such on our front door. We have to replace it, and DH is useless at anything like hanging doors, so we have to pay for them to do it. Looks like we have to have the whole frame redone, so have to pay for the door, the door frame and the labour. I hate that. I'd rather put it towards a vacation. Or something.

I know what you mean.
But I'd start shopping for a new one now, even if it seems to be working a little better. When you find a good deal, jump on it. Our washer and dryer both broke down earlier this year and had to be replaced pronto, which meant we didn't have the luxury of waiting for a good sale.

Hey at least you'll have a dryer. It hurts when you have to spend almost $500 to have your cesspool pumped. Paying all that money for #@*$. That hurts.

That sounds like our year of non fun purchases. Tires for the car, then a new dryer. Ours had been limping along, dying slowly for a while. It was taking forever to dry stuff and it made terrible noises. It started to eat clothes, so it had to go. Then my daughter ends up needing several fillings and a root canal & crown. She's 15, obviously not taking as good of care of them as she should is always told to, and we are paying the cost. Like me, she "inherited" really weak enamel. So after all the repairs, she had a special kind of strengthening sealing put on. You can hear all this adding up, right? Waited 3 self and started getting her braces on. It'd crazy. We've now used all of dental allotment for the year and all of what was on our flex savings card, and we get to make a monthly loan payment on her teeth! I think the dishwasher is getting ornery too. ?

Ours is old and is not helping either of us sleep well or get up in morning without pain. I've been researching, and holy shit! Can I just say that I think some of the prices are insane? I have a bad feeling that we aren't going to agree on much either! We're probably going to look at upgrading our queen to a King though. Any suggestions based on experience would be appreciated!

Oh gosh, I must be more odd than I thought! I enjoy spending money on new things for the house whether it's a door, washer, drainpipe or furniture - I love standing back looking at it later and thinking that it's going to be easier to cope with or it looks much better etc!

We just spent over $1000 on a big ass TV because our old one died a slow and painful death and we are addicted to TV Of course, that means that the ensuite shower that is leaking is not getting fixed this month again ... priorities
