So I'm over at my parents' house tonight and my brother is here. I was showing my dad a video on their computer (it was on Facebook) of the kittens in my garage. My brother walks up and says "I have the solution for that" and pulls out his pistol and pretends to shoot the screen. Then he shows us that he has 6 bullets and there are 5 kittens and the mother so that's perfect.
I don't care about the cat threat. What I care about is that there are typically 3 kids at my parents house - my son and nieces. My son will be here in an hour.
I had no idea that my brother carried a gun. And he said he he it with him always. Even inside my parents' house. They live in a nice area. There is no danger inside their house. And my parents know he has it.
I lost it. I used the F word on him about 10 times. He will be leaving when my son gets here because he is mad. And my dad is mad about the F word.
Is his a common thing? To carry a gun around kids and in a house that has no danger? And to whip it out to show it off?

Oh and we are going to cedar point with him next month. Actually him and his wife and my niece are coming with us. We are paying for the hotel and tickets. I bet that idiot plans on taking his gun on a roller coaster.

I hate concealed carry. And it freaks me out. I know a guy who has a permit and he is one of those people who is always "joking" like that, but I have also seen his temper. He is scary.
I would be really nervous to go on a trip with someone who had a gun and messed around that way with it.
I also know with family it gets super tricky.
Sorry, I don't have any suggestions. I wish I did.

My husband and I both carry concealed, even at home. 100% of home invasions happen at home That said, your brother is an idiot. No responsibly armed citizen would ever...EVER pull their weapon unless s/he intended to eliminate a threat. Carrying is not a joke, not something to brag about. In fact, nearly nobody knows that either of us carries. Hence the "concealed" part. Your brother broke every one of the four rules of carrying a weapon. You have ever right to be mad and to think that he's dangerois and unfit to carry a weapon, because he is.

i don"t like people with that "gun's blazing" bravado... ever. in my opinion, that kind of behaviour gives gun owners a bad rep. i have mentioned here before i was shot by a .22 as a child so i pretty much would rather not see your gun, know you have gun, wanna think you are carrying a gun...... i would have a hard time travelling with him, knowing my kids would be there as well.

To carry, probably more common than you think.
To whip it out like that, no, not responsible.
Sounds like your parents knew about the gun and are okay with it. Their house, their rules and up until now it sounds like he was responsible with it, you didn't even know he had one. It wan't appropriate for him to whip it out and point it at the computer, breaks one of the main rules in gun safety (never point a gun at something you don't intend to shoot).
I won't get into the whole should he or shouldn't he, that is a personal decision that only he can make.

I can't imagine that anyone would think what your brother did was acceptable under any circumstances.
I have a conceal carry permit and my firearm is not a toy.
Since he has shown he is irresponsible, I would make it clear that I would not visit or travel while he is carrying.

His carrying a weapon would not even be a blip on my radar. I would be absolutely pissed that he threatened to kill 6 live animals for absolutely no reason.

Every person I know of who has undertaken the responsibility of getting their CHL, carries everywhere, just about 98% of the time. You would never know they carried if they didn't tell you. Not one of them acts like their gun is a toy. Your brother was being foolish.

I have never seen a gun unless it was behind glass ( in a museum ).I would have been horrified by the gun and his behaviour. Who wants to go on holiday with someone with that mentality?

Just found out his wife carries one here too. You know, because 2 guns are always better than one.

I used to have a concealed carry permit. I got it for professional purposes. I did not carry a weapon on me at all times, and I never carried it on my person in my own home or, frankly, in other people's homes. Moreover, if I found myself in a place in my personal life where I thought I really did need to carry it on me, I always tried to find a way to just not be there any more. Much safer.
In a similar situation, Yubon, I would have not been happy either. I would likely have also used the F word, as it is in my vocabulary. I would not be vacationing with the idiot and his gun.
ETA: Eventually, I stopped renewing the permit. Not because the professional purposes changed, but because environmental factors did - one of which is that I think carrying is actually more dangerous that being unarmed. My 2 cents.

I know several people who conceal carry and have no issue with them carrying. They've also never whipped out their gun and acted like an ass about it though either.

I would be pea livid myself. I could not care less if a responsible adult carries, concealed or otherwise, however pulling it out for no reason, that would tick me off. As others have said, a gun is not a toy.

Annoyed wouldn't even start to describe how I would feel. I would be DONE with any type of in person relationship with the brother and his wife. He was playing with his toy. Not how a weapon should be treated. EVER. What your brother did was beyond childish and stupid. I never use the F word but I think in that instance it was totally justified. And grandpa can either realize how important it is to me and end the gun carrying in his house or I'd be limiting the time my kids spend there. Especially not while uncle/aunt are there.
There are members of my family with concealed carry permits. I have no idea when or if they are ever carrying. The only time I've had even an inkling was during a night photography class I took and one family member insisted on always going out with me and we had to take their car instead of mine. I suspect a gun was in the car in case it was needed. But it was never mentioned, or visible.

I would have a huge issue with anyone having a gun in my house without my explicit permission... and I don't let my daughter spend time in the homes of people who have guns.
I would be pissed bout him pulling it out!!!

I know someone like this. Why the need to pull it out and show everyone? And the fact that he brought a loaded weapon into my house without permission is just wrong. My husband let him know that we didn't appreciate it and the weapon was not welcome in our home. If he had actually just concealed it and didn't act like a cowboy, we never would have known. This family member doesn't have a history of making responsible decisions so if it had been someone else, we might have felt differently.
My point is that anyone who feels the need to act like that with a weapon, shouldn't have one.

My SIL's DH* walked into the living room one day where my then three-year-old DD, my then ten-year-old niece, my DH, and I were sitting. Threw his backpack on the floor and whipped out a handgun. LOOKY WHAT I GOT. It was loaded.
My DH went nuts on him and told him he had better get that shhhh put away proper and do it right f-ing now (with some additional expletives).
So I reckon my DH agrees with you.
I was horrified that a loaded gun was anywhere near two children and was glad my DH said something before I did.

Yubon, he is effed up. No one with good taste does stuff like that. It is his right to carry, it's also his right to be an ass, I guess. If someone did that in my house, my dad would escort the person out and would not be welcomed back. Ever. Very poor taste about the cats, too.

I have always been annoyed by people who think they should be packing at all times. I would have done the same thing you did minus the F bombs. My Family hates swearing. I always get my point across better with a calm discussion. But inside I really want to yell, Obscenities and tell hem they are a careless idiot. If I saw someone in public packing around a gun I would run and hide! Jen

This. A thousand times, THIS!!
My brother and father are both hunters and own guns. My DH has his CCW and owns a gun (though he does not keep ammo for it at home and never actually carries). A responsible gun owner (CCW or not) would NEVER do that.

Whipping out the gun like that would probably be the end of me being around him. Macho BS + crappy judgment + loaded weapon = no thank you.

I don't know who around us has a concealed carry permit but I suspect many do given that 50% of our neighborhood is active or retired military. I'd have dropped the F bomb and be livid with your brother if I'd seen him pull it out like that - immature & irresponsible.
Slight hijack, are guns even allowed at Cedar Point? I know you can't carry at Disneyland, Legoland or Universal Studios and Knott's Berry Farm allows off-duty/retired cops to carry but they can't ride rollercoasters (which is all there really is at KBF).
