My husband was mowing and found this beautiful moth with it's wings all curled in, barely moving. It is really cold here today, so he brought it and after about 15 minute it opened it's wings up and began to fly. We took it back outside and it flew away. The wing span was about 7 inches. I have never seen anything like around here.

Beautiful colouring, but I'm glad it wasn't in my house! I find moths a little creepy.

I'm quite sure that it is a Cecropia moth. If we had had a way to keep it alive in the house we would have. It is supposed to warm up again in a couple of days.

So gorgeous! The only large moths I've seen are Luna moths, which are so pretty. I've never seen one of those beauties!

Wow! I haven't seen one of those since I was a kid. They like maple trees, so if you have some near you, you might see more. Or, you might be able to spot the caterpillars. They are amazing, too. Big fat green things about the size of your index finger with different colored bumps along their backs. It's good you let it go. They only live about two weeks after becoming moths. Lots of living to do in those two weeks -- finding a mate and reproducing.

"It's wings all curled in..." maybe it had just recently hatched out of its cocoon, and was still in the process of filling out its wings after hatching?
regardless, it's a gorgeous specimen; thanks for sharing!

That is amazing! I have never seen a moth like that but I live in northern Illinois. Do you live in a warm area? Where are moths like that found/ Thanks for sharing

Where are moths like that found/ Thanks for sharing I grew up in northern Illinois and my dad fond one once and brought it home for me and my sister. It laid its eggs in the habitat we had for it, then died (that's what they do). So pretty. ETA: We kept constant vigil, but none of the eggs hatched. We were really disappointed!
