I know this is going to sound snarky, but to those that have spent $500 to $900 on a purse can I ask why. Are they really that much better or is it just the big name thing?. My story is that I needed a new over-the-shoulder work bag. The bag I had been using was a giveaway that I used for 8-10 years and finally completely fell apart. So I started looking around for a replacement, and couldn't find ANYTHING that was remotely attractive. I looked at my usual places (Target, Kohl's, JCPenneys) and couldn't find anything. I figured, I am 42 years old... I have 2 master's degrees... I will be carrying this bag every day... maybe it's time I start looking for a grown up bag. So I did! And I still had the hardest time finding anything I liked AND that would fit my needs. And I didn't want to spend $500 on a bag that was only OK. But I found this Burberry one online and knew right away that it was PERFECT. It is so me. I haven't regretted it for one minute. And I'm 99% sure I'll never buy a bag this expensive again. It had nothing to do with the name or the brand or the price. If I had found a knock off, I would have happily bought it. The only reason I bought it was the pattern was perfect and the size and design of the bag fit my needs.

Nope. I'm pretty sure if you added up how much all the purses in my closet cost it would not total $900. I'm pretty cheap, I'm retired and don't need a purse that often. Heck, I bet I use a beach bag more than my purse!! Ha ha, you could add up every purse I've ever bought in my life and it wouldn't add up to $900! Like I said, I'm thrifty! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Q_m8lDOvc_3Le3r1GKdf.jpg)

$900 for a purse, it had better be able to clean my house or have a smart phone built in.

I actually like it and I suppose if money was no object I would probably buy most anything I took a liking to. So, sure.
I can appreciate the value of a well constructed and really nice bag. I own one of that type - not super high end but a step up from what I usually carry - and it's nice. It looks and feels good. It's just that I bought it on clearance and it fits my budget better than a much more expensive bag. It's not a high priority for me so there is not a budget line item for luxury items like this.

I can't imagine myself spending $900 on a purse ever, regardless of my income. It's just not me. Now I would spend $900 on a saddle or a camera or a new piece of furniture. So I'm not opposed to luxury items as such, I am just not into purses.

If I was rich and had millions and millions in the back I would pay that much for a purse. This purse appears to be Italian leather and I like the gold clasp instead of silver. I would have to touch it, feel it and try it on before deciding. It seems odd that someone looked the price up online. I wonder if people do that to wealthy people often.

sues @busypea - I certainly mean no judgment. I would totally spend $900 on a sweater. I love sweaters. Purses, for me, are strictly functional items. Same with my car. I don't care if it's pretty or sporty or has bells & whistles. It just has to fit my wheelchair in the back & get me from A to B. Now, I'd happily drop $900 on an organizational unit that helped me keep my scrapbook supplies organized, or gave me a place to put my Hummel figurines. I'd totally splurge on this cool diecutting machine I've seen at the local stamp store. I might even spend that kind of money on a gorgeous pair of gloves, if I was guaranteed they'd keep my hands warm. Not a purse though. A purse is just to hold my keys, medical stuff, and wallet. Your comment was not remotely judgemental, IMO. I wasn't referring to anything you said. Cool. Just wanted to make sure. I know that I'm one who has never understood my the love my female friends will have for shoe stores & looking purses. It's to the point that we trade off... I get equal time in craft stores. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Q_m8lDOvc_3Le3r1GKdf.jpg) I have literally never owned more than one purse at time. I only get a new one when I the current one falls part. I'm like that with my wallet, too.

Much like hand bags, a quality leather saddle will last for generations. Saddles are expensive and it is actually much easier to find one that costs $900 or more than it is to find one for $300 or less, at least in my area. I'd have one now if I could justify spending that much on a saddle for a free horse. ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Ivm7lm0DayrhoRpwvCeH.jpg)

Almost everyone I knew freaked out when I bought a $400 used saddle last summer. It was a bargain and a fantastic saddle! But yes of course there are many, many, many saddles that cost a lot more. I have made a habit out of only looking at the ones I can afford so I don't fall in love with something I could never have. For the type of riding I do a $1000ish saddle would be a luxury and probably serve me for the rest of my life.

In fact my daughter just outgrew her pony saddle and I put it up on top of my bookcases in my family room. Saddles as decor...who knew??

I.e. a taller/shorter/different ride etc.? Are they different colours? Different leather? Different embellishments/designs etc? Oh yes! I have an Australian saddle, a ranch saddle and an endurance saddle. The Australian and ranch saddle are real leather, the endurance saddle is synthetic to keep the weight down. You can get saddles in almost any color or design and with tons of embellishment if you want to spend the money. The really flashy ones are not cheap. MadCoW makes some pretty unique stuff. Then there's all the additional tack like bridles and breast collars which are available in even more colors and combinations. The hard part is that not every saddle or piece of tack will fit every horse. I bought a gorgeous breast collar last year that I just had to have and it is not big enough for my horse. Unless you get into the really pricey stuff most things are just sold in a couple of standard sizes. So if you wind up with a tall, sway backed, large headed, long necked horse like my Rio.... well lets just say fit is very challenging and most things do not fit him. This is the saddle I want more than anything right now: Attachments:![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/thumbnailer/sqoR_FACDwPLkcL_1kZI.JPG)

Nope, can't imagine having that kind of money to spend on a purse, or shoes for that matter. But to those who do, good for you! I'm not judging, just jealous! If I had $900 fun money to spend on me, I'd save another $900 and start looking for a Weber mandolin..... Gotta start investing in Powerball tix. And I don't really care for the purse, but it is probably nicer "in person."
Oh and tinaev, gorgeous saddle. I understand completely why saddles are expensive. Nothing worse than spending a day trail riding on a cheap, uncomfortable, ill-fitting saddle. Bad for you and not great for the horse either.

I didn't like it, so no, I wouldn't. That said, if I loved a purse, I wouldn't have a problem using that amount on it. I only buy things I really love (and need), and prefer to buy high quality items that will last a lifetime, instead of buying several cheaper ones.

I don't spend lots on clothes and shoes so I have no problem admitting I have expensive purses. I wouldn't spend $900 on that particular purse, but yes, I would spend that on a purse I really coveted.

if money were no object I'm sure I would view it the same as dropping $20-40 on a more luxurious useful item (like professional hair care products, makeup). But I'm not in that income bracket so no.

It's not even a purse - it's a clutch.
With that off my chest, no. I can't see myself spending $900 on a purse. I do like a good quality purse, but my limit is $300 and it has to be a classic style that I'll use for the rest of my life.

I don't pay for that either. That's just another sideways put down. (Not that you meant it that way. But it does come off that way, in general.) If a brand name is on the bag and I love the bag- so what? The name/brand of my car is on my car. This is no different, IMO.
Names and brands are on LOTS of things people buy and they don't bat an eyelash at it- but handbags? Put a brand on a handbag and people get indignant re: not paying for something that is branded. Most bags come with a name, an icon or an identifier reflecting the brand...whether you pay $15 at Kohls or $500 at a specialty shop. Why is it only offensive when the brand is expensive?

In the uk a purse is what we keep our cash and cards in and we put that in a handbag. What do you call the thing you keep your cash in?

I hope my post didn't come across that way. I don't care one bit what others spend their money on. I like purses, but my tastes change from season to season. I like changing styles and colors. I don't usually carry a particular purse for more than a few months, so it makes no sense for ME to spend more than $50 on any given purse.
