They'll both be 17 on the concert date...and the band is playing in Portland (three hours away from home). And they want to go just the two of them.  |

As in driving themselves? Tough one ... My dd is 16 and doesn't have her permanent license yet so I'm not sure that I could see her having enough driving experience by 17 to do such a thing but if your dd has had her license for awhile maybe it's OK ... ummm, no  There is no way that you could give them a ride? I know it would be a pain in the ass to hang out somewhere during the concert but at least you would know they are OK  |

They're too young, I don't trust that they wouldn't get in some kind of trouble, they look like they're 23, take your pick. Plus, this would be a first and it's too big a leap for a first like that. |

I would feel uncomfortable w/2 fairly new drivers, only 17 going 3 hours away for a concert. Any chance, you want a night away from home? You could rent a hotel room and make a girls weekend out, taking them to the concert and then going shopping or just relaxing at the hotel until pick up time. Do a mini-road trip and have fun. It scares me to send 2 teens out like that, but I'm also overprotective.

Definitely the law in CA if they are driving themselves, plus IIRC they can't drive after 11 PM here. I'd let the two of them go alone to the actual concert, but someone would be driving them. I've done that with DD and friends since they were 15. |

And there is a rule for the 2nd 6 months of driving: Thank you...I have no problem telling her no, but this puts legal teeth in it and that helps. |

At 17 and I presume fairly inexperienced drivers, I wouldn't feel comfortable letting them go alone. That wouldn't stop me from going to the concert though - I would just drive them and stay overnight. While the concert is one, I'd go out for dinner or a movie and then pick them up.

:yeahthat:I let my DD go to concert at that age with friends BUT it was only 30-40 minutes away and within the driving laws here. The biggest problem I would have (knowing DD is trustworthy) is the six hour drive time in car. That's a long time especially if it gets late and therefore tiring.

If she balks for some reason, I'd look up the penalties, because I bet it's something like suspended license, not just a ticket. Frankly, the thought of driving three hours away for a concert actually kind of freaks me out a little bit. I really stress about parking, getting out of the parking lot, and getting stuck in traffic, especially in areas that I've never been to. |

The major venues in PDX are safe, but driving by the Moda center/Rose garden is crazy confusing. There are a heck of a lot of sketchy little venues though. Where exactly is the concert? Driving 3 hours home after the concert is what would concern me most, I would go with and enjoy a night in Portland while they are at the concert! |

At 17-1/2, I finally let DD go to concerts with friends. By that time they were more experienced drivers, and could legally drive friends. The 3 hour drive home would be a concern, though.
Even if it was just DH and myself, we wouldn't want to drive that far after a concert. The adrenaline rush from the event will drop dramatically about halfway home. Can you get them a hotel room?

Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable with two 17 yr. old drivers no matter how responsible they are. If the concert was just an hour away I would consider it. Now my husband would probably be fine with it! He doesn't worry about driving as much as I do. But if I didn't want them to go, he would support me.
Last week my 15 yr. old daughter wanted to go to a baseball game with three boys she is good friends with. The driver is only 16, and I wouldn't let her go. I don't feel comfortable with her driving on the highway (30 min. away) and after dark with such a "young" driver. Well, the other boys' parents didn't feel comfortable with it either, so one the boys dad drove and I was fine with that.
I admit to being paranoid with teen drivers! My biggest "teen related" worry!

My kiddo and her 3 friends are 16 and could get to the FOB concert themselves (2 hours away)- but I will be taking them - watching the concert from another location, and then bringing them home. We would be getting a motel room - but one of the friends is a boy.
My ultra trusting parents let me and a girlfriend go to a Sting concert when we were 17. It was a four hour drive. We even got a motel room - although I'm not sure how as we weren't old enough to legally get one - my dad must have pulled some string or personally guaranteed it. That was many moons ago.

To me, it's less about the three hours there and more about the three hour drive back. A late concert, likely won't let out til midnight, puts those girls on the road into the wee hours of the morning. Couple that with inexperienced,tired drivers, and I would be up all night with worry. I second driving them yourself and hanging out with a book and coffee while you wait for them to be done.

I'd also need to know what band was playing. There would be some that I'd be okay with them inside alone. There are some I wouldn't.

I'm not entirely sure that we would have told our parents that we were going to a concert at that age. But if there are actual laws that say they can't drive, well, I guess that's the answer. Sucks though to have their freedom restricted so much though.

If they get into any kind of trouble, you're in the same city, not 3 hours away. |

That would probably be my reaction too! I guess if they were really good, and I could fit it in, I may find a way to road trip with them, but I'm a helicopter Mom and I just don't think I could bear to let them go alone!

I remember going to a concert at that age. I think it was Earth, Wind & Fire. The venue was 45 minutes away. My dad dropped us off, hers picked us up.
Honestly, if you don't start giving her some freedom now and give her the tools on how to be safe, then what happens when she is on her own away at college in the not so distant future?

My 19 year old DD and 2 friends just drove to where they go to college (2.5 hours each way) for a play. This was her first time driving there and it made me nervous on several accounts... She has no sense of direction (got lost last year driving to a dr apt 20 min away and ended up an hour and 20 min away in the wrong direction), she had to drive home late at night after the play, it has been storming all week and I AM A NERVOUS MOM. She made it and I am glad we passed that hurdle.
