Tunisian Beach Massacre and other outrages

I don't see your point?
I've certainly seen it on the news and read about it online and discussed it in real life.
Not sure why there is any meaning behind not starting a thread here about it?
This isn't everyone's main form of social interaction, so just because there is no thread about it means diddly squat, doesn't mean I didn't know about it or didn't care...so that's probably true for others as well.

Posting "oh no how awful" on a message board really means nothing.

I'm in the US and saw it in my Facebook feed yesterday. Can't remember if it was from the NYT or the Guardian. Terrible.

I'm in USA, both are being reported. I've had a lot going on, so It could just be me, but there's been more coverage of our two domestic current events: AME church shooting (conf. Flag) and SCOTUS decision. Those are huge for our country and feel more personal and in some way each effect people we know.

So I've read, or seen on TV, more about those two. The international events I've "listened" on radio or TV while doing other things, bit haven't sought out more.

Until yesterday. My husband had his back to the television at the diner during breakfast yesterday (Saturday AM). My face must have reflected the horror of the beach footage when I saw it first time. Horror is all I can say. I'm sure we'd be talking about it with RefuPeas if we didn't have such landmarks issues happening. This is just my experience and explanation, others might be different.

It's extremely early morning here and I can't sleep, hope this is coherent!

My son's best friend came round to walk Turriff yesterday, as DS is away for a few days. He and his family were due to go to Tunisia on Thursday, and Thomson's are working to get them an alternative holiday. The killings are tragic, but the ongoing effect on the country's economy is likely to be devastating.

OT, but do you think there would be the same rush to cancel holidays if something like this happened in Magaluf or Benidorm?

I'm aware of it. But it happened the same day the marriage decision was handed down so of course it was over shadowed. Doesn't make it any less tragic.

Why haven't you brought it up sooner?

We haven't had any threads about the SIX shark attacks off the North Carolina coast in shallow water in the past two weeks yet either.

The Tunisia attack was horrific, I have seen the footage on CNN.  I know less about the bombed Mosque or the attack in France.

With the two big Supreme Court decisions handed down this week, many people in the USA have been focused on those.

Both have been reported in the U.S. media.. Sadly, I think we are becoming desensitized with each terrorist attack.

Last weekend DS was home with several friends including a study abroad student from France. We visited the south of France, including Lyon and then spent a few days in Paris. That was last October and we felt there was a heightened sense of security in Paris. All the service trucks to the hotel were inspected before they could make their delivery and French security with rifles around major tourist attractions.

The attack in Tunisia was heinous, those poor souls taking a holiday.

What will it take before leaders in the world agree to take action to root out and destroy this evil?

I've definitely been following it. But I don't particularly care to come to NSBR to start a "oh how horrible, what a tragedy" thread. Honestly, what more can be said about it other than it was horrific and awful?

I just got back from France a couple of weeks ago.  They have been very vigilant as far as checking bags, etc. when going in to possible targets.  But really, all the vigilance in the world can't stop some idiot with a gun from showing up somewhere like a beach, or the area under the Eiffel Tower and opening fire.  Sure, they check you when you go IN to the places - but there are huge crowds waiting to go through security that would be easy targets, just like people on the beach were. Now they have upgraded their vigipirate program (kind of like the red/orange etc. we have here) to the next higher level, I'm not sure exactly that changes things on the ground for tourists.

Anytime you begin a thread in this manner, it steers away from what should be the focus of discussion. Tsk tsk!

I read a lot of local, national and international news from varied sources. I had seen reports of the attacks (Kuwait & France) on the news but only read about the horrific massacre in Tunisia in an international news source online. There was a slight delay in reporting it on the news here from what I saw.

This guy was young, he hid his weapon in a parasol and chose his victims while he walked/talked among tourists on the beach. At the time when I read he had murdered 37 people. The images of all those people on the beach...words cannot describe the level of depravity one person can cause in such a short period of time. I took no comfort in seeing him shot dead on the street. No comfort because this isn't the first atrocity and it will not be the last. But my heart hurts for all those who died and all those who survived.

The U.S. IS on alert, police are patrolling the streets and we've been advised of a possible threat occurring on our Independance Day festivities here. So, if people are not aware, they should be. Worldwide. Military families are constantly taught to remain vigilant, be aware of your surroundings. This is the reality of all people worldwide now in this age when war and terror is being waged on citizens and not the battlefield.

And when you have big events that directly effect you and your loved ones like the two SCOTUS decisions (healthcare and marriage) they get attention.
A generation ago it would have taken several days to get images of the international events. Sometimes our lives can't handle ALL the information coming in, whether it's good or bad.
And sometimes orthodontist and soccer practice and physical therapy ...and..and... trump them all!

But that's sort of my point... this particular tragedy is more relevant to you and the OP because of your ties to it; the majority of Peas are American, and I'm willing to bet the majority of Americans (not necessarily Peas, just Americans in general) don't even know what/where Tunisia is!
