Girl Scout Camping
Ok regardless of what one thinks about The President how neat is that to set up camp on the lawn of The White House and have The President and First Lady sit around a version of a campfire with the girls. I honestly can't think of a former President or any of the wannabes doing something like this.

I think a lot of people would like him if they didn't let the political rhetoric get in the way. He seems genuine and although I don't always agree with him I respect him and things like this are just AWESOME!!!

That seems like something up Jimmy Carter's alley, based solely on what I've seen of him when he's on Daily Show to talk about various things he's working on. I don't know if it's something he'd have done while in office.

Let me try again. What former President or First Lady do you think would think of and do something like this? Bill Clinton, Laura Bush, Eleanor Roosevelt... I really don't feel like going through all 42 presidents and first ladies to determine if they would have a campfire at The White House. ETA: Jimmy Carter is another good one.

On a side note, what about Vice Presidents? The girls could give Dan Quayle a spelling lesson and Joe Biden could teach them it's okay to discharge a firearm outside in the air to scare away intruders.

Aaron Burr could teach the dangers of a duel. Let's not forget Dick Cheney! Wooo! This is fun.

the president who comes to mind is Teddy Roosevelt...he loved being outside, was a naturalist..started as a kid in the city collecting animals...had a ranch and camped all over the west with famous naturalists...camped all over africa, explored rivers in the amazon...so was a camper all his life.

This is so awesome. A few weeks ago my girl scout troop had a meet n greet with players and a parade on the field of a local minor league baseball team. After the game we set up tents on the field and watched a movie on the giant scoreboard with the sound piped throughout the stadium. Staying the night on the field.
I used to think that was really cool. Until I read this. Now THIS is cool! I wish we lived closer to DC, I would jump at this opportunity!

I think his a horrible President and has done irrepairable damage, but I do think he seems like an ok guy to hang out with and give him credit for any community stuff he has done. I think this is pretty cool. I do think many other presidents have done stuff just as cool though.

It's cool, for sure...but he's not the first President to do special things for kids at the White House. He won't be the last either. The President and Mrs. Bush were the first to invite children to play organized Tee Ball on the South Lawn. A total of 20 games, two or three each summer, were played during this Administration. Youngsters from around the country were selected by Little League to play in these games, all of which President Bush attended. Several of the teams were composed of children with a parent on active-duty in the military. In addition...not only children...but our military was very important to GWB. The President and Mrs. Bush were honored to welcome tens of thousands of service members and their families to the Nation's Home. From large events, such as breakfast with the President on the South Lawn for 1,500 military spouses, to private meetings between the Commander in Chief and wounded warriors in the Oval Office, the Bush Family has always considered members of the military community special household guests. For many years, the President and Mrs. Bush held a Children's Holiday Reception and Performance in the East Room for military children and families. georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/firstlady/arts-social.html

It was a positive news item for all to enjoy as Americans about the President and First Lady! Too bad the OP had to sully the post with her editorial comment about other presidents and wannabes.

I agree...it would be cool. But plenty of other Presidents have done similar things. Obama is no trailblazer for doing pretty cool things for kids while in the White House.

The Clintons hosted a ton of kids to read the Christmas story on Christmas Eve, 1997. Socks was there too. Again...just because OP "can't honestly think" of any other President doing this kind of thing doesn't mean it didn't happen. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pBRo2GcMKY

Meh. Children are invited to the White House during every administration. It's possible some of the First Couples (read: First Ladies) are involved in brainstorming the ideas and it's just as possible they just okay ideas offered by staff members whose job it is to look for opportunities to support/publicize the family's favorite causes. It's not like the president is out buying ingredients for the s'mores. The difference, I think, is how charismatic the President or First Lady is. President Obama (and GW Bush/Clinton/Reagan) can look lovable hollering out, "What the HECK are you doing in my backyard?!", while others might just look stiff or curmudgeonly. Mrs. Obama looks like she's really into the girls and the knot-tying, while some other First Ladies would probably have looked less natural. Doesn't necessarily translate to their level of support for the experience or the cause. And as a former Girl Scout leader, I'm just thinking about the (reams of) parent permission slips needed for this "camping trip."

I think it's very cool. It used to be that presidents would visit Boy Scout Jamborees when they were held in Virginia. My son attended, and President Clinton declined to show. I felt pretty bad for the kids and wodered why a former scout did not come.
I think it is very important to be involved with kids during a presidency because children should grow up learning about our government leaders as more than just "Leader of the Free World."
Both Twenty-first Century presidents score well in my book for that.

I don't think he makes a good president and certainly don't like his politics - but, yes, I'd often thought that other than that, he seems to be a very likable person. And I agree with riverisis - things like this are awesome.

Oh dear the only one who "sullied" this thread with their comment is you. You do understand that former Presidents and wannabes include Democrats don't you? When I said I couldn't imagine a former president or a wannabe doing this I was thinking about their personalities not their political affiliation. And that is a fair observation to make without sullying the post. Look we all know Presidents and First Ladies are looking for ways to connect with the American People. We also know that The White House has been a venue used by Presidents and First Ladies to connect with kids and service men and women and their families for years. But I liked this event. It was different in a good way. And no I can't see the others sitting around a campfire singing songs and looking like they really want to be there.
