I'm confused. I thought the first person who questioned the picture, did so because they recognized it from having seen it elsewhere online. THEN people started googling to see if that was indeed the case. So it wasn't like anyone targeted her initially.
And I have to say, this is really bizarre timing. Something similar happened last week on another message board I read. In that case it was a long-time poster who out of nowhere posted a horrible life story and then when folks started asking questions she asked to have her account deactivated.
Very odd.

A couple of things: First, penny, your posts on this subject (in both threads) are eloquent. It wasn't easy for you to share such personal information, but you chose to do it to illustrate important points, so thank you. It was especially effective to read how important this forum could be to somebody who relies on the connection to the community, and how how keenly the loss of that connection might be felt. Second, some of you seem genuinely flummoxed by the idea of "disappearing" as a way to cope. It can happen if you feel very embarrassed - like the old adage of desperately wishing the floor would open to swallow you. I once stopped reading/posting at the old board for a couple months because in a thread about unions (!), someone wrote that I was a embarrassment to the teaching profession and my students were probably ashamed to have me as a teacher. Different circumstances (i.e. undeserved), but as a newish member, I felt I had been viciously humiliated in front of others - humiliated enough to want to disappear. Silly, I know, but it sure FELT like real life, and some of us revert to coping mechanisms that are natural for us. So, long way of saying: I get the dropping-out-of-sight instinct.

penny I thought you were pennyring as well, thanks for clearing that up. While I did not google scrappower's picture, the picture did seem very off to me, so I don't see it as a surprise that other people too thought it couldn't have been her. Like others said, I thought she was much older than in that pic.

Well, some of us have had many turns with the bat, while others of us just want one turn. It takes a lot of time to properly kill a dead horse.

It's not that I think it took a lot of effort for people to do the search, it's that certain individuals were invested enough to even think of searching in the first place, plus their need to come back right away and bust her that I find bizarre. And like I said earlier, I find it equally as bizarre that someone would upload a fake photo and take the time to develop a back story in the first place. I'm deflecting nothing, just observing that she wasn't (IMO, anyway) the only crazy person in this ruckus. I go to Google almost every time someone here posts a hinky stat. And yeah, I'll call the person on it. A hinky picture isn't any different. It's a matter of curiosity that is easily satisfied with a couple clicks of the mouse. I Google and pull up maps when I watch the news. Hell...this morning I was reading a fictional book that made reference to Bernie Goetz. I remembered his story, but was a teen at the time. I wanted to read the facts of his case from an adult POV.
With a world of information at your fingertips, I'm surprised that it seems "odd" to use Google to find/learn things.

I would be incredibly stunned if Scrappower had not received at least a few get well gifts from the kind peas. She mentioned her illness and treatment all the time and appeared to receive a lot of sympathy. As far as the Peas saying people are crazy and overinvested, who has the time, whatever. I google/IMDB/Wiki stuff ALL.THE.TIME. This is 2015, info is easily accessible and literally at our fingertips. It isn't being a super sleuth to be able to sniff out poorly executed obvious lies. Anyone who has time to be on this message board is no busier or more important than anyone else, we just may be looking at different stuff. Once again, it's not the ease of access that perplexes me. I use Google on a regular basis, just not to look up pictures posted on a random message board. I said earlier, to each their own, and it still applies. But that doesn't make me think it's any less crazy, lol. I still maintain that some people are way too invested in this place to have had such a visceral reaction to this whole deal, and I'm more than okay with being the minority opinion.

I agree! Since I got a Kindle, I read much more but take much longer to read a book; especially anything historical. Highlight the name, google it or go to wikipedia. Then something on that page sparks my interest and before I know it, I'm reading about an entirely different subject that doesn't have much consequence in the book.

I do this too, when I read about what sounds like an interesting place in the news or a book. I use Google Earth, and usually street view if it's available, to get a better picture in my mind of what the area or building or monument looks like. It really is an amazing resource to have now, as are the others that have been mentioned.

On a personal note, I agree with some that I love this place and see you all as "friends". I even know a few R'Peas IRL and am closer friends to a few online. I completely understand that a lot of people do use the internet as a place to be someone they are not, but I can 100% guarantee you that I have NEVER made anything up. I would completely suck at making up a story and sticking with it, let alone have absolutely no reason to create someone I am not. Believe it...or not. It does bother me to think that I may be making friends with and agreeing with R'Peas that may not be being honest. Again, not a surprise, just a disappointment. LOL I don't even need to make anything up, because the truth has been stranger than fiction in my life! I have a good friend that I swap "you will NEVER believe this one" stories (all true) and we often tell each other all the time that we should write a book one day because you can't even make up stories weirder than some of the stuff we've actually lived through. Now on a somewhat related note, I have another real life friend who seems to be a compulsive liar. She's a very nice person but she has told some stories that are real whoppers. Some have been easy enough to disprove, others are personal stories that just don't seem like it's possible to be true (pending lawsuits she has allegedly filed [even though she doesn't have money for retaining a lawyer], laundry lists of things she's supposedly allergic to, obscure medical conditions she supposedly has even though she has no symptoms and that kind of thing). It makes me want to be a spreadsheet keeper just to keep it all straight! Some of it I know isn't true because I've gone through several of the situations myself and I know she's making it up as she goes along because no shred of what she's saying matches my reality. When asked for details (because I'm generally curious anyway), she struggles to fill in the gaps so in my mind I'm calling BS but I haven't ever called her out on it. We don't get together all that often so it's really of no consequence to me, but I do find it strange that she feels it's necessary to make up so much stuff and heavily embellish the rest. I guess I just don't understand it. Now it's gotten to the point where it's almost comic relief to see what crazy stuff will come out of her mouth next!

I would be such a better student now than I was in the 80s because I would be so much more engaged and informed. It took me forever to get through The Tudors (which I realize wasn't always historically accurate) because I was constantly looking up things and then off into some rabbit hole of history. Same goes with almost every documentary or other fact based work that I read or watch.

I would not do that as you may be running off a real new member who would be a great asset to our community. Plus if she decides to come back under a new name, it would be fairly easy to spot her posts. While we can hide our writing style for a post or two, it would be difficult to do so long term. On the off chance that she did sign right back up (which I can't imagine), who the hell cares? Let's go on a witch hunt so we can out her again?

There was a thread recently where a reference was made about Gladys Kravitz, the nosy neighbor from a '60's sitcom Bewitched. I mentioned that a pea from the old board used it as her avatar but couldn't remember her name. Someone posted that it was edgycoolness who left the old board some time ago.
Last week I was logging on and noticed the last new member to register was edgycoolness. Imagine that!
I think there is a segment of this community who create alternate identities on a pretty regular basis. They are posting and their responses are written in a way that you know they have been here before. It doesn't seem to bother anyone as they interact with them knowingly. I really don't think what scrappower did was that big of a deal. If she is sick perhaps using that photo gave her an escape from her troubles. I just hope she's ok.

I just don't care either way so no pitch fork from me. I certainly don't recall any of her previous posts so I haven't gotten familiar with her writing style like some people have. I wouldn't know her from Adam. My point is, people want her to come back but who is to say she isn't already back? If she is, fine. If not, oh well, it's her choice.

I love that time period and taught it in school. I kept watching the Tudors thinking no! I had to keep reminding myself it was a story. I like to fact check too, not here, but I am a bit skeptical of so many things I see and hear on television. My kids will often remind me not to argue with the television because they can't hear me.

I know that when she mentioned hand fasting I made a mental note that I wanted to google and see what that was/meant, and I think a couple of other Peas mentioned being curious/interested in that term too... I never got around to googling, but if I'm remembering correctly a couple people did and the picture she posted came up with articles, blog posts, Pinterest pins, etc... That seems like a reasonable way to discover the image... And thank you to everyone who's said kind things about my post... Like I mentioned, I've been shown a lot of kindness here and I'm so appreciative... And...lol Sorry about the confusion between the different Pennys... Think I'll change my avatar to my picture... Seeing so many faces on the other thread made me realize just how much easier it is for me to remember who people are when there's a face associated...

admin I just looked and she's gone Why are you paging admin? Why are you saying "she's gone" on page 6 when that's what we've been discussing for this whole thread? It wasn't a page. Admin was already here, said something, and christine58 was replying to that. There was a bit of confusion about how a person becomes deleted. Some thought admin had to do it, while others felt it was a 2 tier situation. You can delete some info one your own, but admin must do the rest. Admin said she had not deleted anyone, which was confusing for those who thought that admin had to be the one delete someone. ETA: Oops. She answered at the same time that I was typing.
