If I am going to self-serve then yes. I get out, take my credit card and keys with me, and lock my door because my bag is on the front passenger seat. I always get visuals of someone creeping up the other side of the car, silently opening my door and swiping my purse.

Passenger doors are locked but I don't lock my driver side door. I pay at the pump and never go into the store.

Yes, I lock my doors while pumping gas. I also always lock my doors when inside the vehicle, whether moving or parked. Years ago I read an article in the paper about a young college student who was sitting in her unlocked car in the college lot, studying before a test. A man entered her unlocked car, held a gun to her and had her drive to an isolated location. You can imagine how the story concluded. So, yes, my doors are always locked.

I've never lived where I felt the need to do that. I never leave the car at the pump or walk away from it. I get gas and go. My passenger door is always locked but I don't take the keys with me. I do sometimes remove them from the ignition automatically when I turn it off but lay them on the seat beside my purse.

I read the title to this thread and puzzled over it for a second until I realized... oh yeah, Oregon is one of only two states in the nation where we are not allowed to pump our own gas. The attendant comes over, you hand them your card, they pump your gas and bring you your receipt and off you go. The only time you get out is to wash the windshield, but sometimes they do that too if they aren't too busy. I was wondering to myself, "Now why on earth would I lock myself in?"
Every few years this law is challenged, but so far no luck. There's a $500 fine for pumping your own gas in Oregon, for those of us who know how!

I didn't read all the replies.
But my DD drives my 18 year old Honda. Stick shift, roll-down windows, each door has a manual lock. No "beep beep."
I spent years admonishing my kids to lock their doors when getting out of the car. And when driving carpools, I was pleased to hear my kids tell their friends to wait until the doors were unlocked from the inside (they would always expect all the doors to unlock automatically). And they would remind their friends to lock the door upon getting out, again, not something their friends were used to.
So I recently had to go rescue my DD, because she got out of the car to buy gas, wallet in hand, and discovered after she finished pumping the gas, she was locked out of the car. The kicker was, she had to call me from a neighboring Starbucks, since she'd locked her phone in the car too. That surprised me, as her phone rarely leaves her hand!
I probably should get a key made to keep in her wallet.

Yes, I always lock the doors besides the drivers door and hold the keys. Not worth the risk, otherwise!!

@**gypsygirl**, I paid about $2.30-something yesterday I paid $3.88 at Costco, one of the least expensive options around here. I can't believe you get full service with that price . I buy 95% of my gas at Costco and their set-up doesn't make anyone an easy target for stealing a purse and making any kind of get-away. AussieMeg I can't believe they are removing the pay at the pump option, I was so happy when that became the norm here.

If I am paying at the pump, I don't lock it, but if I am paying inside, I do.

Off Topic: For those who live in states where gas is pumped for you, what is the rational behind it? Is it to keep people from pumping it and driving away or safety? My grandfather, mother's father, owned a gas station and everything was full service. They pumped gas, checked the oil and cleaned the windows.

Yes! I have keyless entry. Even if you take your fob and put it in your pocket, the fob is close enough to the car that a crook can simply unlock your passenger door.
(I've thought about this since getting my new car...also with keyless entry...so typically I just put my purse in the driver's seat while I'm pumping gas)

Usually no unless DD is buckled in the back seat, then I would. My car doors all auto lock once the car is moving, so when I get out to pump gas only the driver door is unlocked. We also usually fill up at Costco where it would be harder for someone to get away quickly or unseen.
However, I would NEVER leave my purse sitting right on the seat in plain view. I take it with me because the car's keyless entry fob is zipped in the front pocket. Even though I know there's usually no cash money in my purse, no one else knows that so why tempt someone to steal it by leaving it there? I have a cross body purse and I put the strap over my head when I get out of the car, so it wouldn't be all that easy to get it away from me.
With what some of you ladies pay for your purses, I can't believe you would ever leave it just sitting on the front seat regardless of whether the doors are locked or not!
When my car is parked somewhere, it's locked. When I'm driving, it's locked.

I'm pretty sure the back doors won't open unless the driver's door is unlocked first by grabbing on the handle. I almost always have to unlock the front door first in order to get the back door to open before I can buckle my DD in.

I almost always have to unlock the front door first in order to get the back door to open before I can buckle my DD in. I didn't even consider the back doors (I guess since I'm well past the stage of having to buckle anyone in back there LOL)
All I know is that for my car (Honda Civic) I'm pretty sure I could be pumping gas...and even if I had the key fob in my pocket, someone could be on the passenger side unlocking my car. (I don't think the rear doors have keyless entry...at least in my car)
But what do I know? After driving my car for more than 3 months and scouring the owner's manual looking for a way to automatically unlock all the doors when I unlock the driver's door w/o the key, I finally found it in an onboard menu that I didn't realize I had. So now my kids don't have to wait for me to take the extra step to unlock their doors...they can get in as soon as I unlock the driver's door.

Lock my doors and take the keys, car theft, purse snatching is rampant at gas stations (yes even Costco).

I do lock my door at the pump if I am going to be going inside to pay or purchase something else and I have my dog with me. I'd hate for someone to steal her or have a curious child open the door to pet her, etc. The likelihood of either of these things happening is small, but it does cross my mind so I play it safe if she is with me.

i take the keys & put them in my pocket, but I don't lock the driver's door because I'm standing right there, pumping gas. I pay with a card, so I never actually leave my car's side.

Always. My driver door is set to always be unlocked unless you push the lock button if sitting inside or push the fob when outside of the vehicle. This is handy because I can then keep the other door and back hatch locked. When I am pumping gas I put my card and phone in my pocket and my purse down on the floorboard on the driver side so it's not as visible. When I get out of the car I press the button to lock my driver door.
If someone wants in my car bad enough to steal they will regardless if it is locked but I can still ensure I am taking reasonable precautions.

I generally grab my purse (it is a small little thing) and my keys (I have a locked gas cap so I have to have my keys) but rarely consider whether or not the doors are locked. More often or not, the windows are down too.
As a rule though, I am the only in the car, so the passenger doors are probably going to be locked-likely because I don't unlock them.
I can be a bit naive though, and probably should pay more attention to making sure that at the least, the doors are locked.

No, I don't. Most of the time, I'm alone and I had only unlocked the driver's door so all other doors are still locked. I wear a cross body purse I made. I made the strap a little too long and the purse hangs down just below my hip and 99% of the time, I don't take it off when I drive. It hangs down between the seat and the door so when I'm pumping gas, I'm usually still wearing my purse. I do lock my car any time I'm going to leave it unattended for more than a minute, even when I'm just going in to get a pop.

Once again, I have learned from the Peas. I didn't know that full-serve gas stations still existed in the U.S.!
