A driver & passenger locked themselves out of their van at the Costco gas station. DS and I were shaking our heads listening to their conversation. Driver always locks her door, but left her keys in because her friend was there and is mad at friend for not taking the keys when she got out of the car. Friend got out of the car to chat with another driver, is mad because it wasn't her responsibilty to check for the keys. I was just surprised they both locked the car at a gas station.
As a passenger anywhere I never lock the car doors, that is definitely the driver's job.
So do you lock the car when you get out to pump gas? I always take the keys, but never lock the door.

Yes, I do because my purse is always in the front seat. Several years ago my aunt was pumping gas with my 95 yr old grandmother in the car- she was holding both purses. A guy opened the passenger side door and started grabbing purses. My grandmother let him take my aunt's purse and she held onto hers!

My husband and I usually together when filling up the car so no, the keys stay in the car. Is there some reason to take them out when pumping gas?

No. I only do if I have to go inside for some reason, but 99% of the time I buy my fuel at Costco.

No, I don't lock my car doors but I do take my key out of the car. I don't leave it in the car.

Nope. I never lock my door at the gas station. I never leave my car while I am there.
And people think New Jersey is a bad place to live. I bet our gas prices are lower than over half the country as well.. and we don't have to pump our own gas!

Passenger side is always locked. The driver side door is stuck in the locked position so I always have to take my key with me or else I would be locked out.

Yes, every single time when I pay with cash inside I lock my car. Let's say I have bought gas 50x in the last year. I have left it unlocked once and it was last week. That is the first and only time.

Pump gas what is that? Go to gas station roll down window man walks up I say fill it please. Guy says cash or credit. I tell him and he puts gas in car.
I do lock my doors when going into the store at a gas station. But I always have my keys with me because I only use key to lock car. I learned a long ass time ago (many years of locking keys in car and having to call husband) I never lock car with the knobs.
The last time was when I was 200 miles north of home and locked my keys in car. long story short. Hot day mom daughter and dog in car. stop at gas station half way home. don't need gas so pull up in front of the store. get out. I take dog to potty, mom goes into potty, I hand keys to daughter and tell her to lock car if she gets out because she was going to stay in car. Daughter decides to get out and go potty. I go back to car to get into car. Car is locked no daughter. Daughter come out of store. I am standing there ask her to unlock car and she says I don't have keys.
None the less I have no keys and the car is locked with purse in car. moms purse is in car. I had cell with me because it was in my pocket. I call husband which is at work. he says try to get it unlocked if you need me to come unlock it let me know. so the gas guy and the store owner help after over an hour they get door open. we thank them get in car and I call husband no need for him to come.
So yes it does happen.

He charges the same as everyone else, he just offers full service. It is nowhere near my house. I like going there when I am in the area, like today I will be a block away. Most of the time it's just me pumping my own gas. (I have known how to do it since I was 6 or 7 years old...I wanted to learn).

Yes always.
I never leave my car doors unlocked anywhere.
But ESPECIALLY at the gas station. I've always been scared of someone getting into my car on the other side while I'm pumping gas.

When I first learned to drive, you needed the key to unlock the gas tank . Now it is more of a safety habit. For many years I had little kids with me and wouldn't leave the keys in the car so if they accidently locked themselves in, I could get to them. DH is rarely with us when filling up my car.

I don't lock the car unless my keys are in my hand. Driver's responsibility.

I always have. Even before the recent rash of people stealing purses while you're pumping gas. If the doors are locked and the keys in my pocket, I get no suprises.
When the girls were little I didn't want any weirdos stealing them!
ETA: I almost always pay at the pump and I'm right there but I still lock my doors.

I never lock my car anywhere, so definitely never at the gas station. Once in a long while if I have just bought groceries and have to make another stop I might rememember to lock it otherwise, never.

My doors auto lock when the car starts moving. When at a gas station I open my driver door and it keeps the other 3 doors locked but the driver door (also the side the gas door is on) stays open and also unlocked.

My car is set that only the driver's door unlocks when I stop and open the door. I get gas at Costco about 95% of the time, but it don't lock my door. If we are traveling somewhere unfamiliar, then yes, I do lock my car when I get out.

I literally cannot even imagine not locking my car doors.
They are locked when I am driving and when I park.
Always.
They are only ever unlocked for the 5 seconds it takes to open the door.

I lock my car when I'm driving or even when I'm just sitting in it. Just not at the pump.

I always do. I'm amazed at how many people leave the doors unlocked, windows down, car still running etc. One day I was pumping gas and the pizza delivery guy had his money bag stolen from his car while he was inside. Dh was at work on year the day after Christmas and a guy had his car stolen while he was inside. He left it running because he was just going to be a minute.

This is how it is in my car, except my locks aren't automatic. However, I lock my car when I get in so the other three doors are locked when I get out. I don't lock the drivers door when I pump gas. Never have.

Nope. Hell sometimes I leave the keys in the ignition
I don't have a purse, so I'm not worried about that being stolen

I'm not really worried about someone grabbing my purse or my kid at Costco, but it's self-locking. I do take the keys out of the ignition and leave them on the car seat or somewhere, so I don't have to listen to the key-in-ignition/door open noise. I also open the driver window before I turn off the engine. It's a hangover from my previous car that would randomly relock itself sometimes. Just habit. oh, and I would never, ever lock someone else's car unless they told me to. If I leave someone in my car any time I may get out for a moment, I tell them if they're responsible for the key and that they should bring it if they get out of the car.
