So, I've decided to splurge and have booked one for myself for when I go on vacation. I don't mind people touching my face the way I mind them touching the rest of me.
I have discovered/educated myself/googled that the "service charge" is the tip, but I can add over and above that if I want. Are there likely to be other people beyond my esthetician who will need a few bucks? (No shampoo girl, obviously, but will there be someone else?)
And the "spa etiquette" section says to arrive about 30 minutes early to get checked in, etc., and to "disrobe to your level of comfort." That makes a lot of sense if you are going in for a massage, but less sense for just a facial. When you get a facial, do you take any clothes off? I guess I could see maybe taking off your shirt so it doesn't get wet, but that also seems like that is what towels are for.
Anybody want to share some tips or other advice?

My tip is that there are different kinds of facials.
Be very specific about what you want.
Some parts of some types of facials can be very painful (like extractions).
Other kinds of facials can be relaxing with lots of massaging of the face and neck.
Be informed about which type you booked and be up front with the service provider about your main goal (specific skin needs vs pampering/relaxing).
I always take my top and bra off and wear the provided robe or cape. If they use masks, lotions, oils, etc. those will stain your shirt.

You need to take your shirt and bra off because most facials include a brief shoulder and neck massage. Be prepared for a hard sell of products at the end, but don't feel bad about saying no. There shouldn't be anyone else involved in your treatment who you would have to tip. Don't wear make up to the appointment, there will be extractions done and it might sting a little, and the person doing the treatment should be pretty thorough with explaining what they are doing and what products they are using during each step. It should take about an hour.

30 minutes sounds way early to me. I generally plan on 15 minutes if it's a new place or 5-10 if it's a regular place. They will probably have a questionnaire for you to fill out.
I have never had any secondary folks who I needed to tip...just the person giving the facial.

I take off my shirt/bra/pants. There are wrap around robes you can wear, or, as I do, I just hop on the table and pull the blanket/sheet up over my body to cover myself. I have mostly always gotten a shoulder/arm massage and sometimes a hand treatment as well while a mask is doing it's work. I've never had an extraction (maybe never needed one.) I've always let the esthetician decide what my skin needs (is it dry? is it oily? wrinkly? etc.) Do NOT do any kind of peel. Not on your first visit, and not on vacation. Ask for something relaxing, etc. I haven't had anyone except the esthetician to tip, but I've always used very small salons.

Also, take your earrings off. I had a facial that the creams apparently loosened my earring and the back came off. We did find it.

I take bra, top and pants off. The bed is heated so it feels good. The first time I left my pants on but it was a lot more comfortable taking them off. I only tip the facial gal. She did not do a hard sell of products. I go to someone working out of a salon. I need to schedule one because it has been a while. Enjoy

I take shirt, bra and pants off. While the pants are totally option, I find it more comfortable to lie there without them on. And the place I go warms the bed and it heaven to feel the warmth in the skin

I take off shirt, bra and pants..and leave my jewelry (rings) at home. Most facials, or some, involve shoulder, arm, hand and sometimes foot massage. If you are getting the one with extraction, they will turn on a bright light during to pinch out the blackheads.
Tip, just the person giving it.
I've never had a hard sell for product etc...Enjoy! I love getting a facial!!

Hmmm, while I completely disrobe for massage or wax, I've never disrobed for a facial only. Interesting that most do. But I usually wear a tank or t-shirt.
Thirty minutes seems awful early to get there, but you will need to fill out a questionnaire about your skin and routine, including what products you are using.
There should only be the esthetician there, so no one else to tip.
Just say no to the product. My friend learned the hard way. She loved the products, purchased them, only to have a full face rash the next day. Redness, burning, itching. Luckily she hadn't opened the product and the salon took them back.
Know what you've booked. If you've never had a facial, ask her to explain what she is doing while she's working on you.
Enjoy! I love a good pampering.

Thanks for all the tips so far, especially the reminders to talk about/ask about the products ahead of time and the possibility of paperwork!
(As far as arriving 30 minutes early: I think that is probably more for the massage and full body treatment people, because it says it's so you can use the steam room or shower ahead of time if you want. My confirmation email might say 20 minutes-- I'll be sure to double check.)

A girl I used to work with would get them once a month. She would wear a robe. She had bad eczema and would have break outs the week she had facials. Overall, after the flare ups her skin was better.
