We were leaving Hobby Lobby and this gentleman held the door open for us as he carried out a huge, wrapped art piece. As we were loading up, 3 employees, 2 with the normal HL aprons and then one other guy in checkered shorts and polo shirt came rushing out to the guy and asked if he bought the art. I saw the polo shirt guy about 3 times in the store while shopping, so not sure if he was a manager? The art guy showed them his receipt and put the art in a car. Then the art guy just took off running and the polo shirt guy started chasing him through the parking lot and around to a big intersection.
Polo shirt guy starts screaming, "get the license plate number and call the police." Polo shirt guy did not catch the art dude. He was about 3 feet shy of catching him. It was like a scene in a cartoon. There was a lady driving the art car and she gave the art back to the HL employees. When the polo shirt guy comes back he stops the lady in the car and says that she's in trouble and will be charged with trespassing/theft, etc. She starts crying and says that she doesn't know the art guy very well and she doesn't want to get in trouble. HL employees called the police. WOW! I wonder what was the art piece?

What a scene! I am pretty sure they don't sell Piccaso's at HL! I hope it was worth going to jail over.

I'm confused. If he didn't pay, how did the art get wrapped and what about the receipt he showed him? (I'm not expecting you to have the answers, just "thinking out loud.") I highly doubt the lady doesn't know the art guy very well. She is probably hoping that her crying will make them let her go. Did you stay until the police showed up?

He walked straight past the check out lanes. The art dept. or framing place is in the rear of the store and I don't think you can pay at that station. I'm assuming that something wasn't right because he ran. The receipt could have been bogus. I did not stay for the police since I had my little ones with me. If it was just me, I would have helped.

It's also possible that the "receipt" was whatever the art counter gave him to give to the register clerk.

I had to laugh at the use of "art theft" and Hobby Lobby in the same sentence. I opened the thread thinking it was a museum heist of some sort. It sounds like a crazy scene.

I hardly think anything at HL can be considered art. Foreign made home decor perhaps, but certainly not art.

I am guessing he had custom framing done and then tried to walk out without paying for that. Matting and framing is expensive especially if it was for a large piece.

Hard to say what he had framed but that framing stuff can get really expensive for small pieces so I can only imagine what the cost would be for a larger piece and if he had double mats or more, special glass, etc.whew, could have been really expensive. They wrap it at the framing table and then you pay at the door unless you are a thief and then you walk straight out. It is strongly against HL policy to chase anyone, especially out of the store. The company does not want to place their employees at risk nor face a potential lawsuit if something happens to the said employees. Many stores have that policy these days and the thieves know it. I wonder if the polo shirted man was an off duty police officer working security at the store. My HL has a crazy theft rate and have had cops working there in the past. At least the guy didn't get away with the framing object.

In the days before electronic tags I was in a baby department and a man gathered up half a rail of baby clothes, still on their hangers, and ran. Three security guards gave chase but I've no idea if he was caught. The very same month I was standing next to a man at a record stall in an open air market, flipping through LPs (yes, a long time ago) and he picked up a handful of records and ran.

We have a $35 odd sized map that is going to cost $400+ just for a cheap custom frame, no mat. Crazy! we are going to try spray mounting it to wood, instead.

I've bought fun things at art festivals before that have turned into serious costs if I custom framed them.

I've bought fun things at art festivals before that have turned into serious costs if I custom framed them. My husband got two beautiful maps of New Zealand with the most beautiful colors when he was in NZ for work a couple weeks ago. He works for a NZ company and wants to put the maps in his office.
We went the next day to look for frames, but nothing fit. Maybe it's a standard size in NZ, but not here. Well, we can't afford the high price to custom frame it, so we will probably have to tape it to the wall. Or when he goes back, maybe if he stays a couple weeks he could look for frames there. But no, not a good idea, he has expensive tastes, and would probably buy frames more expensive than the cost to get it custom made at Michaels! The posters were only $16, but they are beautiful!

You can buy a custom mat cutter for $40 on amazon and if you can draw a straight line with a ruler you can cut your own mat to size. You could buy frame, mat, and cutter for well under $100. I did this for a project at work and even I could cut my own mat.

I have a piece of artwork by a famous artist (I assure you, you'd know the name). I had it custom framed at... Hobby Lobby.
ha.
I had a small piece of art (7x10) framed about a year ago. Just the frame, no glass, no mat was $100. To be fair, I have caviar taste. lol
To all of you with odd shaped art you want framed, if it's paper, just go get a larger stock sized frame and then have a mat cut to the size you need - stock outside measurements, custom inside. Then go to the glass shop and get some glass for it (probably cheaper than the framing shop). It'll cost a lot less than a custom sized frame. I've done this a lot.

I had three odd sized Nancy Noel prints that I had framed and matted and I paid about $200 something for all 3. And this was at an art gallery!!

Well having a Rembrant framed at HL is a little different to buying the actual painting from there. Now you really have to tell who's famous artist's work you've got. You can't leave us all guessing

Similar to Freebird... For things that are an odd size, I've bought a larger frame and a piece of poster board or art paper. I just layer the print/art on top of the paper and put it in the frame that way. I just did that for a print for DS's dorm room. If the print/art is too big for poster board, you can buy just the mat piece. Ask for scraps. I've gotten some really big pieces of mat that were considered scrap.

gillyp back in the day of my many days in retail- yup that was the way it was done. Epescially jeans. They grab by the handfuls and stand by the door. At Hobby Lobby they do have good art work and good framing. That's a bummer you watched something like that go down. What a bizarre thing!
