How does that make it legal then? If a company says you don't technically have to buy something (even though realistically you do) since the no purchase necessary option is ridiculous, when does the no purchase necessary option go over a line? What if the no purchase necessary option was to walk 3000 miles and film yourself doing it??

Good point. And, considering that they want original copies mailed to them. Most giveaways require a postmark by a certain date, not a received by a certain date. Does this company not have a lawyer on retainer to help with this sort of stuff? I mean, they are a MULTI-MILLION dollar company.

Creativity is often fueled by inspiration, and over at Studio Calico, I find that I can routinely, almost daily, find inspiration... to quit. From their mercurial business model right down to the practices of treating customers unfairly and like children (as exampled by committing them to write an essay) and all of the wackiness in between, I can draw inspiration to get as far removed from this company as I possibly can.

I'm pretty sure they realized it was illegal or something because they thread has been altered from the original to include a new "Official Contest Rules" form that you can download that wasn't there before. The OP locked the thread and then about 20 minutes or so later there was a form you could download on dropbox. In that form there is a section that states this: Maximum one (1) entry per person per item for a maximum of ten (10) entries – if it is discovered in the ordinary course of the contest that you entered more than once, you will be disqualified.NO PURCHASE NECESSARY: To enter, you must purchase one of the items above or have the option to write a minimum 1,750 word essay on how Studio Calico inspires you. To be entered, mail your essay to: Studio Calico Bundling Contest, Studio Calico, 114 Corporate Court Bowling Green, KY 42103, USA (the “Contest Address”). If submitting an essay you must include your name, address and phone number on top of your essay, and include your signature at the bottom of your essay. All essays must be originals and not mechanically reproduced. If mailing in an essay entry, to be eligible for the contest, such entry must be received prior to 11:59 p.m. (EST time) on the Contest Closing Date. Entrants who are under the age of majority in their province or territory of residence must have their essays signed by a parent or legal guardian.Of course, the essay part is still not mentioned in the thread, only what products you could buy to be entered. How convenient that the essays must be received in the mail prior to midnight on the contest closing date, and they closed the contest early...

I guess they're hopeful no one will kick up a fuss over it to require them to call said lawyer.

There's no doubt in my mind that this thread is being monitored continuously by SC, and many other industry people. That is why the potentially illegal contest was halted.

We should all contribute a couple sentences about how SC inspires us. This is an entry to a randomly-chosen-winner contest. It's not being judged on whether it's a good essay or not.
"Studio Calico inspires me to check out other kit companies. Studio Calico inspires me to seek out businesses that are upfront and transparent and honest about their practices."

Seriously??? I try so hard not to be really negative about the things they do, because I will not let someone else (especially a company) control my emotions. So when they made me angry more often than not, I quit caring/purchasing. But this is SO hard not to comment about! Seriously? A 1,750 word essay after the fact?? I never said a word about this in the past (except to one other subscriber who was in the same situation as me and we had polite, private discussions), but they ran a Facebook contest quite a while back for a $500 gift card. You had to make a video and post it on Facebook and get people to like it (they had to "like" SC on FB to be able to vote.) I NEVER do stuff like that, but I filmed my son and it was fun and it was only supposed to last a week or something like that, so why not? The rules were SO convoluted and LONG. There were all sorts of issues with posting the video, etc., etc. It was such a pain. I helped a bunch of people on the boards to problem resolve and get their videos loaded. At the end of the contest period, one other gal and I were in the lead (the one who was messaging with me later.) THEN SC obviously decided they didn't get enough Facebook likes and extended the contest for another week or two. This gal and I had already done the whole "hound your friends to vote for you" thing for a week and neither one of us wanted to keep doing that to our Facebook friends, so of course, neither of us won even though we had followed all the rules explicitly, helped others, and were winning by the contest deadline. I honestly don't care that I didn't win. What I did care about was how flippantly they treated the rules of the contest and kept changing things to suit themselves. I felt stupid having encouraged my friends to vote for me to then feel like it was a bait and switch contest. They sent me a "prize" out of the "Calico Closet" afterward, thanking me for being so helpful to other members on the board. Gee, thanks for the couple of pieces of old paper. This was at the same time when they would delete and edit things on their website when members would point out misinformation. When everyone was upset about the one PL kit that had basically no embellishments and were quoting the blog post that described what to expect in the PL kits, they just went and deleted the blog post so there was no evidence of what they had promised. Don't ask me why I didn't stop purchasing from them right then and there. Sigh. I'm so glad I am not purchasing from them anymore and I am not even tempted by their products. Just want to state the obvious. When companies run contests and state "no purchase necessary", all you have to do is send in an envelope with your name and address. They are also given more than two days to do that. Just sayin'.

dude!! They did something recently like that. Right before NSD, they were super cool and sent me a box of stuff and in the box was written something like, "get someone you trust to video record you opening this up." So my boyfriend did, and there was a note along with some items that said something like "looking forward to NSD. Upload this video by xx date/time to be entered into a contest to win a subscription for a year". It didn't have any other instructions, really. So I did, and emailed the folks I had to email, and to this day have no friggen clue whatever happened to that video, that contest, who won it if anyone, nothing. I thought it was really weird! They never mentioned it at all on NSD, and it was very cool that they randomly sent me stuff, so it's not like I mind, but it's totally fitting with changing their minds about the contests and promos they have.

Why would they close the giveaway already? It even says on the thread that it would be open until Sat at midnight. Of course now the thread is locked so you can't even ask that question. Perhaps they realized they were holding an illegal lottery versus a legal giveaway. They probably "figured it out" from reading this thread ...
EDIT: If they were going to allow for "essays" they would need to allow time for someone to actually mail the essay to their office, per their rules and regulations. They can't even create a good scam if they try ...

gigi333 you cheeky monkey, you started a thread. And they're still beating around the bush. Course I started a thread im well sick of the blatant prejudice against international susubbers i sub to ali's stamp and kit, 2 messy boxes and the sc pl and sb and they constantly treat me like I sub to nothing, it's so annoying shipping is $3 so really that's only $36 why should all the international subbers be left out of a comp for such a tiny amount
