I need to bring an appetizer and a dessert to a dinner party this weekend for a service group. Approximately 8-12 guests, we won't know who's invited or what any courses will be.
I don't have any potluck fears with this group - my anxiety is in finding something "good", fun and possibly trendy to make. It's a good group of women, a little worldly and "upscale" for lack of better words. Some are very good cooks and entertainers.
Any suggestions? Caprese skewers is about my speed is that too blah?... I'm like the old commercial about setting a pretty table but not cooking.
Thank you all in advance.

for appetizers I like doing pears or cantaloupe a slice of cheese and a slice of pachuto (or any meat you would like to use). I like to take the meat lay it flat put the cheese on the meat put the fruit on the cheese and then roll it in a log and put a tooth pick in it.
for desserts I love to do brownies. most people love brownies. you can frost some and leave some plain. you can sprinkle powdered sugar over some. add nuts if you so desire.

mini creampuffs for dessert. Easy to make, fill them & drizzle some chocolate on top.

Here is one of my favorite desserts and it is super simple - Tres Leche CakeFor appetizers could you do a gourmet olive tray of some type. As I was looking I found this site that does party trays, there are some great ideas here and you could recreate them yourself - Party Trays

For dessert, why don't you make Eton Mess? It's one of my favourites, and is so easy to make. Lightly crush shop-bought meringues, and mix together with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. (It has to be real cream, no aerosol crap).
I like to adapt it sometimes by adding a splash of port or kirsch over the strawberries first. Some people like a touch of ginger cordial instead, but I'm not a huge fan of ginger. You can substitute raspberries or blackberries, or even pineapple.

Bacon wrapped artichoke hearts Prosciutto wrapped melon Sort of like caprese skewers - cool and allow spinach tortellini to cool and then put on a skewer with cubed mozzarella cheese and a grape tomato. Drizzle with Italian dressing. Crab stuffed cucumber

For dessert, can you make a mostly no bake eclair torte. You'll need a box of graham crackers, one box of sugar free jello instant vanilla pudding (or regular is fine, just make sure it is instant), milk for the pudding, a thawed carton of cool whip (regular 15 oz size, if you want to futz with real whipping cream, have at it), and a can of chocolate frosting.
Make the pudding in a very large bowl. (You'll be folding the cool whip in later. If the very large bowl won't fit in your fridge, use a smaller one, just know that now you're dirtying two bowls.) Put it in the fridge to set. The longer ahead of time you can do this, the better, but in a pinch, the five minutes will be just fine.
After the pudding is set, fold in the cool whip/whipped cream.
Layer graham crackers in a 9x12 pan. I think it's best to break them into squares, and then when you get to the edges, break them smaller to fill in the spaces.
Spread half of the pudding/whipped cream mixture over those crackers. Put down another layer of grahams. Spread the rest of the pudding mix over it. Put down another layer of grahams.
In a microwave safe measuring cup, spoon out some pudding, maybe to about the 3/4 cup line. Microwave in thirty second increments, stirring in between, until the pudding can be poured. Pour it over the top layer of grahams. Generally, it will fill in where it needs to be, but you can also microwave another batch. I usually use up nearly all of the container of frosting (with just enough left over to put on a few leftover graham crackers.)
Refrigerate-- overnight is best. The pudding will soften the graham crackers to make them seem more like a pastry crust. Doesn't cut neatly like a cake, but is tasty!

I like basil leaves stuffed with seasoned ricotta. Simple and pretty. Or you could do spinach leaves.

For Appetizers this marinated cheese looks nice and tastes very good: marinated cheese recipe
For dessert I often make: oreo truffles, texas sheet cake, maybe a nice pound cake and some fresh fruit and whipped cream?

Feta dip Take a container of grape or cherry tomatoes, slice in half Crumble a block of feta cheese Mix together with a generous amount of olive oil in a bowl or on a platter Mix in Greek seasoning and kosher salt to taste Serve with toasted baguette slices
At the risk of this being way too simple, how about homemade guacamole? People love guacamole - it might not be super fancy but it's usually pretty popular!
I make mine by mashing 2 ripe avocados, squeezing the juice of 2 limes and adding cilantro, chopped red onion and kosher salt. Keep tasting everything and adding more lime juice/salt/cilantro until it tastes good to you. I like serving mine with Tostitos hint of lime chips.

Thank you!!! My family's going to enjoy my dessert practice!!! I'm so glad I've got RefuPeas for questions like this. The friends I'd normally ask are in same organization - and same mystery position.

I have made these Avocado & Cherry Tomato Salsa Wonton Cases numerous times to take to pot luck type things and they have been very popular. You can bake the wonton cases in advance. The only issue is that you don't want to spoon the avocado and salsa into the cases too far in advance otherwise the cases will probably go soggy. I was going to suggest a pavlova for dessert, but they can be a bit tricky if you haven't made one before. I like lesley's idea of Eton Mess, that way it doesn't matter how the meringue turns out because you break it up into bits anyway. Or...... you could try to make the pavlova and if it fails you can just turn it into Eton Mess - perfect!!

I think the Caprese skewers would be great. Grilled prosciutto wrapped asparagus is also always popular or cherry tomatoes stuffed with bacon cream cheese (kind of a twist on a BLT).
For dessert grilled pineapple, strawberry & angel food cake skewers drizzled in chocolate.

I think caprese skewers have gotten overdone. My favorite new appetizer is a Thai one I learned how to make at a class last fall. Different, crunchy and sooooo yummy! It's quick and easy too and it gets devoured quickly when I make it.
Pork & Peanut Dip 1/2 pound unseasoned ground pork 1/2 cup coconut milk 1/2 cup water 1 tsp. oil 2 Tbsp. crunchy peanut butter 2 Tbsp. brown sugar 1 Tbsp. fish sauce 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 tsp. curry paste 1/2 cup diced carrots 1/2 cup diced water chestnuts Roasted chopped peanuts Chopped cilantro
*Heat oil in medium skillet. Brown curry paste and garlic for a few minutes.. Add ground pork and stir fry, breaking up any large chunks. Once pork is cooked through, add coconut milk, water, brown sugar, fish sauce and peanut butter. Mix ingredients and bring to a boil, stirring. Turn off heat and stir in diced carrots and water chestnuts. Transfer to serving bowl and top with chopped peanuts and cilantro. Serve dip with crunchy vegetable slices (cabbage, carrots, green beans, cucumbers, etc.) This can be served hot or at room temperature.

Well, bacon is certainly trendy. I'm a veg, but if your crowd is not, then several of these looked good: bacon appetizersFor dessert, I like the idea of brownies served with an exotic (i.e. NOT vanilla) gourmet ice cream flavor such as raspberry or caramel walnut. That way, the traditionalist dessert eaters can opt out of the ice cream, but you've offered something a bit unique.

I just printed out the recipe akathy shared. That sounds fabulous! I have everything for it except for the ground pork. I foresee that going on our menu for the weekend.

I agree that the caprese skewers or honeydew/prosciutto appetizers are great. I also have found antipasto kabobs are very popular. Good luck!

I need to make it and see if I can make individual servings in cucumber cups or wontons like AussieMeg 's recipe. The avocado tomato cases would be good too. Lol except for yogurt in guac- that won't fly in these parts As said above almost everyone here likes avocado and guacamole, especially this time of year. There were a couple of choices I'll save for Fall, like bacon wrapped dates. Yum! Thank you all.
