I skip them. If a book that I'm reading has too many for my taste I skip the book and start reading another one. Yep, me too.

But but but, if you don't read those Scenes then you would not know to heave your voluptuous breast at your lover. Yeah, and there is always the obligatory bodice ripping, quivering maiden scenes. Although, at my age, it is pretty much an every day occurrence around here, so it isn't really "fiction".

I used to love Sydney Sheldon books and thoroughly enjoyed them. Every book had a couple had an obligatory sex scene (or more). All the words he in book after book were the same. (So was the Italian food in the books as well). It was as though there was a sex scene script. I liked the books so the sex was good, but aren't there more words that just "..."? Apparently not. Sidney Sheldon, LOL! What a memory. I actually have only ever read one book-- Windmills of the Gods, which had an interesting storyline, if I remember correctly. I had an English teacher in high school--junior year-- who used to carry on repeatedly about the horrible writing of Sidney Sheldon. Probably the same way I'd personally carry on about certain other authors myself. His earlier works are very suspenseful and I would say exciting. (Windmills of the gods about the hotelier from Eastern Canada was written towards the end of his career and life so I wonder if he wrote it or just gave the storyline and others write it for him? It is nothing like Bloodline (which is good and my friends in Japan liked it, too).

If they're incorporated well in to the story I have no problem with them. I don't know why but reading 'a large bone of contention' on this thread made me spit out my tea!

Ah, I can remember my clandestine reading enjoyment of sex scenes when I was a teen. I read them like a how-to manual in those days. Now? I'll read them if they are well written, if not, I skim and move on.

I find most of them somewhat boring. There are only so many ways you can describe sex, LOL, and most of the good ones are already taken. Unless it really adds to the storyline, I tend to skip/skim over them.
Now, what REALLY drives me nuts is the overly detailed description of the weapons they are using to shoot the bad guys . . .
"He pulled out his Glock 9800457 and admired the length of its barrel. The 20.57 ounce weight felt right in his hand. This weapon was meant for accuracy at a long distances, 3000 yards or more, and the slight pounds per square inch pressure required to pull the forged steel trigger assured that there would be no kick to distort his aim. He looked at the partner beside him, the same one who had made his night one to remember, and noticed that she was using a Winchester 5679003. He was impressed that she thought she could handle a weapon of that caliber. . . . yada, yada, yada."
Seriously, all I need to know is "they both have a gun."

I go out of my way to avoid them. Earlier in this thread someone (can't remember who-sorry!) mentioned that they skip the sex scenes because now that they've actually had sex, they find them boring. That's a fairly accurate description of why I avoid them as well. Sometimes I even get downright ticked off when an author decides to throw a poorly written and unnecessary sex scene in, especially when it's right in the midst of an otherwise riveting part of the book. I find it maddening to have to wade through an obligatory sex scene in a desperate attempt to emerge unscathed on the other side. Now, when I was younger it was a different story altogether. I had to be resourceful because although my house was overflowing with books, romances novels were nowhere to be found. My dad, who has always been a big reader, was a history/political science teacher who enjoyed reading non-fiction, and my mom didn't really read that often. My saving grace was that one of my grandma's occasionally read trashy romance novels and when she was finished with them, she stored them in the same place as all her other books. I'd pretend that I found a book or two that I wanted to borrow, without mentioning any specific titles, and she'd tell me to go ahead and borrow whatever I wanted. What she didn't realize was that I'd go through and find all the books with sleazy sex scenes and THOSE were the books I'd borrow. I was a devious little brat!

I roll my eyes and skip them, too. Even if it's really good (which, I rarely know bc I'm skipping it to return to the plot) I always prefer to HAVE great sex than READ about great sex.

I must not gravitate towards this genre, because I can't remember ever reading a description like that I have to say I agree with you - given the choice, I'd probably prefer a badly written sex scene!

For over 10 years now, I've just found them boring and usually skip them. Like many of the pps, I used to read them and enjoyed them. At a certain point, they just lost all interest for me because there is only so many ways to describe it and it starts to seem formulaic. Which is probably why I found porn so yawn-inducing.

I read a lot of historical fiction, Philippa Gregory for example. She writes a good sex scene, not TOO detailed, just detailed enough. If DH is in the room and the book I am reading has something sexy, I will suddenly and out of context read it aloud to him. That's always fun.

I'm wondering if we shouldn't send this page to some of our favorite authors, LOL. They probably hate writing the scenes as much as the majority of their fans are uninterested in reading them.

I was discussing this recently with a friend (after she admitted she'd read the "50 Shades" books). I like sex, I've had lots of great sex, I can talk about sex very openly with friends or at work (nurse),...but I really dislike sex scenes in books. I'm Ok with the "they kissed and tumbled on to the bed. The next morning they got up and kept solving the murder" type sex references. I have no objection to the idea that two people had sex, but when the author stars describing who put what where and who touched which bit and the moans and the sighs...then I'm out. I don't think the actual description of the sex act adds anything to a novel (by that I mean if it isn't meant to be primarily an erotic novel). Because I listen to my books, it's a bit harder to just 'skip' the scenes (have to stop what I'm doing, get my phone, open the app and fast forward) so often I just leave it playing, but if it gets too graphic or goes on for too long, then I do forward past it. I would also never read an erotic novel, it just doesn't interest me in the slightest. They usually bore me to tears. I've read / skipped over a ton of them in the hundreds of books I've read, and after a while they're all pretty much the same anyway. ETA: Of course, that excludes my adolescence. I remember reading the first chapter of The Godfather that I snuck from my mother's bookshelf. The scene where Sonny's in the bathroom with one of his sister's bridesmaids at the wedding... lordy that was strong stuff at my tender age of 12. Now? Pfft! Move on.

I like the sex scenes, but skip the battle scenes. I read them as "blah blah blah" in my head. I love a well-written steamy sex scene, but don't mind the formulaic ones. Just don't make the murder or the mystery parts formulaic and I'm good.

I'm a skip-reader anyway. I read very quickly and one of the ways I do that is prediction. If it's obvious what a paragraph is about and it doesn't really advance the plot, I skip right over it.

I see these gun descriptions in the "suspense" thrillers (think David Baldacci, although I'm not sure if he is one who does this as much as some of the others). I love that kind of book, but the "gun porn" parts just drive me crazy.

Since my libido is at -100 right now, I skip over them. Just can't stomach reading it. I love her writing as J.D. Robb with the In Death series! I'm currently listening to the audiobooks during my commute for the second time around. As soon as a sex scene starts, I fast forward over it. I had thought that maybe listening to the scenes it might spark my libido a bit, but it just further disgust me.

If I'm reading a romance novel i prefer there to be a few sex scenes. JD Robb is pretty awful at them, i could only stomach the first few books.
If you are looking for decent, non-formulaic sex in romance, i would recommend Mary Ann Rivers.

Well, if the words "hard throbbing member or heaving breasts" are in the book I won't read it, but I don't mind sex scenes if they're just part of the story that sells. In the case of 50 Shades it was 99% sex and 1% plot and I didn't enjoy that. However, I had to read the latest book that everyone was discussing.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the worst sex-scene writer of all time: Laurell K. Hamilton. I had an acquaintance tell me i needed to read two of her series, and dropped them off at my work. I read the fairy series first, and honestly felt like I needed a flow chart to keep track of who was having sex. Orgies with partners tagging in and out... It was crazy.
I was so glad to finish it and move on to the second series, especially when the main character was a self-proclaimed born again virgin. Yay! But, no, a few books into it, and she's having orgy sex, too. I didn't bother finishing that series.

Like many others, it depends on the writing whether I read them or not. I can only deal with so many "throbbing members" and I am over it.
