I'm picking on Nora Roberts, since that's what I'm reading right now (Divine Evil). I've read a lot of her books, they're reliably entertaining for a light read, ranging from pretty good to laughably bad - sometimes I think she farms them out to underlings. What I like best is her portrayal of friendships - female friendships, male friendships, male/female, brothers, sisters, pets, etc. So basically, I enjoy them.
But the one thing that drives me crazy is the obligatory sex scenes that are always peppered throughout, as if she's following a recipe. I find these scenes either silly or boring and repetitive (kind of like real sex...BWHAHAHAHA!!! I kid.) Anyway, I usually skip right over them and get back to the plot. How do you feel about these scenes - are they the best part, or an annoying interruption? Is there one that sticks out in your mind?
I read "Jaws" (much different than the movie!) when I was in grade school, and there was a steamy scene between the Richard Dreyfuss character, and Mayor Brody's wife that I never forgot. And I think many of us of a certain age will always remember a scene from "Forever" by Judy Blume that involved a rocking chair....

If they are well written, I'm good with them. If they are poorly written, I skip them. Once I was reading a Charlaine Harris (True Blood series) book in the pediatrician's waiting room when I got to the infamous Eric/Sookie shower scene. I felt like everyone knew what I was reading. I had to skip it. (For the time being.) LOL

I'm at an age when I mostly skip right past them - I'm reading for the story and the characterisations, not a cheap thrill. Now back in Junior High? I remember passing Forever around and certain pages were dog-earred because that was the part we were all reading

I can do without them. All I need is a few sentences that allude that they're foolin' around. I don't want the details and usually skim over them.
OP - I like NR for your same reasons. And that her women are not swooning damsels in distress. I do think she writes to a certain formula, though. Her books are basically the same with different names and occupations.

I like to read erotica and that is ALL about the sexual tension and the resulting sex scenarios. If the book is well written then I enjoy them, if not I don't bother with the book once that determination is reached.
Authors who are proliferate writers and who have a formula... well IF I am even reading the book, I skip those scenes.

I'll admit to loving a good sex scene interspersed in a book. Nothing is more annoying than chapter after chapter of tension between the love interests and then a "fade to black" sex scene. Now if the scenes were formulaic and predictable I might feel differently. I've never read any books by the author mentions in the OP.

If it fits with where I believe the story to be going (and is well written) then I have no problem with it. But random sex scenes, especially between random people, pull me out of the story and not in a good way. And there can't be so many of them that there's no character or plot development. When I'm in the mood for that, there are other things that I can read.

I roll my eyes a lot. If they are included, it's usually not a big deal. I had no idea Outlander was full of sex scenes. That was too much for me. Maybe I'm a prude, but there's so many more books out there. I didn't care to finish the series.

I haven't read much actual Nora Roberts in years, but I do try to keep up with her J.D. Robb books. I agree about the sex scenes. I usually just try to read through them very quickly. I enjoy the mysteries and honestly don't appreciate the detours from the plo. It's funny, I just read Jaws last year (I think it was super cheap on Kindle) and I do recall that scene (not in specifics, though). Like everyone else my age, I read Forever in the 7th or 8th grade (wrapped in a lunch bag cover), but I actually don't remember any specific scenes. Just a certain name. I wonder what that says about me, LOL.

It depends. If they're well-written, I enjoy them. Otherwise I find myself rolling my eyes.
Nora Roberts is one of my favorites for "brain candy" – in fact I just reread her Three Sisters Island trilogy . But I do find her books to be extremely formulaic, including the sex scenes.

I don't recall Jamie ever punishing Claire with sex! He did spank her, and that was a large bone of contention between them that was cleared up, but I don't recall him ever forcing himself upon her. I read the book, listened to it on audio, and watched the show. Claire is always very willing

Black Dagger Brotherhood books are all about the sex. That's the best part I used to love Sydney Sheldon books and thoroughly enjoyed them. Every book had an obligatory sex scene (or more). All the words he in book after book were the same. (So was the Italian food in the books as well). It was as though there was a sex scene script. I liked the books so the sex was good, but aren't there more words that just "..."? Apparently not.

I was discussing this recently with a friend (after she admitted she'd read the "50 Shades" books).
I like sex, I've had lots of great sex, I can talk about sex very openly with friends or at work (nurse),...but I really dislike sex scenes in books.
I'm Ok with the "they kissed and tumbled on to the bed. The next morning they got up and kept solving the murder" type sex references. I have no objection to the idea that two people had sex, but when the author stars describing who put what where and who touched which bit and the moans and the sighs...then I'm out. I don't think the actual description of the sex act adds anything to a novel (by that I mean if it isn't meant to be primarily an erotic novel). Because I listen to my books, it's a bit harder to just 'skip' the scenes (have to stop what I'm doing, get my phone, open the app and fast forward) so often I just leave it playing, but if it gets too graphic or goes on for too long, then I do forward past it.
I would also never read an erotic novel, it just doesn't interest me in the slightest.

I remember passing Forever around and certain pages were dog-earred because that was the part we were all reading Page 86. It was a huge deal in my world, when I was 12-ish. I still remember passing it around with that "oooh, sshhhh!" look. Generally I'm fine with it. If it's a good story and well written. I have less patience for crap writing and storytelling ability.

Sidney Sheldon, LOL! What a memory. I actually have only ever read one book-- Windmills of the Gods, which had an interesting storyline, if I remember correctly. I had an English teacher in high school--junior year-- who used to carry on repeatedly about the horrible writing of Sidney Sheldon. Probably the same way I'd personally carry on about certain other authors myself.

Stuart Woods - worst sex scene writer in the history of sex! Thank goodness he has pretty much given it up and infers that it's happening without the really bad attempt at detail the earlier books suffered through.

The exception is if it's crucial to story or tastefully done - like the author let's you know it's going to happen and then moves on, I can get the idea and not have to know did know exactly who did what to who lol.
