I have gotten to the point that I just skip them. I do most of my books as audiobooks now, so I just sorta space out until the scene is over then go back to the story. I'm usually cooking, cleaning or doing laundry so I don't want to drag the phone out to fast forward.

Thanks for sharing that! The only one on the list I read was "Freedom" and that was awhile ago; I don't remember the sex scenes so apparently I skipped over them or they weren't memorable. I also never knew that Woody Guthrie wrote a novel! I may check it out ... interesting to see how the guy who wrote "This Land is Your Land" would handle a sex scene at all, and badly no less, LOL.

Of course I should have thought of this before I wrote it, based on past experience, but I'm really hoping Stuart Woods does not show up here to Peatlejuice me for dissing his ability at pen and ink sex. Or James Patterson either!

I wish I could erase some of the things I read / learned from the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy but for the most part if it's well written and goes with the line of the story, I can see the value of them in books.

I used to love Sydney Sheldon books and thoroughly enjoyed them. Every book had a couple had an obligatory sex scene (or more). All the words he in book after book were the same. (So was the Italian food in the books as well). It was as though there was a sex scene script. I liked the books so the sex was good, but aren't there more words that just "..."? Apparently not. Sidney Sheldon, LOL! What a memory. I actually have only ever read one book-- Windmills of the Gods, which had an interesting storyline, if I remember correctly. I had an English teacher in high school--junior year-- who used to carry on repeatedly about the horrible writing of Sidney Sheldon. Probably the same way I'd personally carry on about certain other authors myself. Oh- I used to love those books! I still remember one scene involving menthol and a bucket of ice... Obviously I read them.

I find most of them somewhat boring. There are only so many ways you can describe sex, LOL, and most of the good ones are already taken. Unless it really adds to the storyline, I tend to skip/skim over them. Now, what REALLY drives me nuts is the overly detailed description of the weapons they are using to shoot the bad guys . . . "He pulled out his Glock 9800457 and admired the length of its barrel. The 20.57 ounce weight felt right in his hand. This weapon was meant for accuracy at a long distances, 3000 yards or more, and the slight pounds per square inch pressure required to pull the forged steel trigger assured that there would be no kick to distort his aim. He looked at the partner beside him, the same one who had made his night one to remember, and noticed that she was using a Winchester 5679003. He was impressed that she thought she could handle a weapon of that caliber. . . . yada, yada, yada." Seriously, all I need to know is "they both have a gun." This seriously made me LOL.

Well, I guess I must be okay with reading them since my favourite series is Outlander. Definitely not all about sex but it has its moments. However I recently discovered LISTENING to them on audio book makes me very ucomfortable! LOL

I read Pillars of the Earth and it is a great book about medieval England (time period correction maybe?) and it has significant sex in it in detail. (The book is about catherdral building). I love sex scenes that are well-written. These scenes are well-written, however, I found them superfluous to the novel. I don't think they added to the novel. They were not poorly written at all. I just felt awkward listening to them. That make no sense at all knowing what I like to read and listen to. I just didn't like them. It felt king of naughtie hearing them. When pjaye said she skipped through those scenes, I remember doing the same thing. They just felt awkward. (Remember I like sex scenes). The book is an excellent read and I highly recommend it. I like Oprah had to ration how much I listened to it as I didn't want it to end! World Withour End, the sequal is supposed to be equally good, too.

Has to do with that person getting a hit from something that shows somewhere on the internet their name was typed... that person then comes onto the board... good or bad.. it has happened... thus Peatlejuice...

I can't believe no one has mentioned the worst sex-scene writer of all time: Laurell K. Hamilton. I had an acquaintance tell me i needed to read two of her series, and dropped them off at my work. I read the fairy series first, and honestly felt like I needed a flow chart to keep track of who was having sex. Orgies with partners tagging in and out... It was crazy. I was so glad to finish it and move on to the second series, especially when the main character was a self-proclaimed born again virgin. Yay! But, no, a few books into it, and she's having orgy sex, too. I didn't bother finishing that series. I have never heard of this author but I feel the need to look her up just for the sheer hilarity of fairy orgies.

Most of the books I read don't have a lot of sex in them. I have been listening to the Outlander series on CD in the car for the last 9 months. Some of those scenes made me really glad that other drivers couldn't hear what I was hearing.

I read a lot of historical fiction, Philippa Gregory for example. She writes a good sex scene, not TOO detailed, just detailed enough. If DH is in the room and the book I am reading has something sexy, I will suddenly and out of context read it aloud to him. That's always fun. I try to avoid books I know will have sex scenes. Like others have said, now that I've been having sex regularly for 20 years, it all sounds so boring. If I read a scene I'll basically time the couple in my head. And then I'm all "Girl, you're panting over a guy who gave you five minutes of foreplay. Lame." It's really just better for me to skip them. Unless my DH is in the room. Like the Pea I quoted, I do find them fun to read out loud.

For some people, including SEVERAL peas, this IS porn. The book gets put down and the bedroom door is closed for several minutes after the passage is read.

However I recently discovered LISTENING to them on audio book makes me very ucomfortable! LOL YES! I've also learned not to listen to my VOICE TO TEXT option on my Kindle. Hearing passionate activity brought to life by that robotic voice is disturbing. As for the original question, I enjoy most of the sex scenes in the books that I read. The ones that I skim over are fight scenes (Black Dagger series for example) or scenery, and clothing descriptive paragraphs.

I read a lot of romance novels and novellas and so I tend to like the sex scenes. but I don't like them if they are poorly written but I can't skip them.
