My BIL is an ass, a jerk, an idiot, a self-centered nincompoop. There, I said it, and yes, it does that feel better.
The other day, DH is on the phone explaining something to his mom and in the background is BIL impatiently saying "let's go, let's go". They are heading off to visit BIL's daughters and kids in another city. It is an 11 hour drive and DH just found out why there was so much urgency to go right then. BIL dropped their mom off at the bus depot. If she missed the bus, he would have her in the car for 11 hours. He drove and she was put on the bus. She is 82, had a triple bypass, diabetic, mobility issues and bathroom problems. I feel bad when I put her on a plane by herself from our house for a 3 hour flight and always get a gate pass and wheelchair.
We only know because of something MIL said to her granddaughter about one of the bus stops. BIL was waiting at the bus depot to pick up his mom and let everyone believe they had driven together.
Our niece has bought a ticket for MIL to fly home and BIL is pissed.

NOOOO!! Tell me you're lying. He seriously put his mother on a bus and he drove to the same exact destination in his car? Please tell me I am misunderstanding the story.
If not, the words you used to describe him don't do him 'justice'.
And if your husband wants to punch him out, I will be his alibi.

I can't believe someone would treat their mother that way.

And why didn't mil say something? Maybe MIL didn't say anything because she would rather ride on the bus than spend that long in the car with BIL He sounds like a complete ass, so I could see that being true.

That's really weird, but maybe a bus seat is more comfortable? Why didn't she fly? That's a long drive for her.

Not a lot shocks me these days but this takes the cake. What did your MIL say about being put on a bus?

What. the. HELL?! And I'm sure he bus ride was longer than 11 hours, right? Because of stops and busses drive slower... So did she have to sleep in a bus overnight? Holy cow. I think this is one I'd make sure the rest of the family knows about. Maybe HE needs to use HER bus ticket home. I cannot believe some people. I'm sorry you have to deal with him. He sounds nice

Was it a single bus? Like a non stop trip and one of the buses with a restroom? If not, and she had to change buses along the way that man needs a good 2X4 across his head.

Wow, that's crazy! My husband treats his parents like gold, there is no way he would put his dad or mom on a bus!
But you sound like a sweet daughter in law caring for her mil! That you worry putting her on a plane is so sweet.

I don't know, your BIL may be all those things, but I'd rather ride in a bus for that distance than ride in a car with mine. Your MIL may be thinking she got off lucky with the bus ride. seriously, if he will do this and got caught, what the shit kind of stuff will he do that he has't got caught for. Elder abuse is often hidden and the elderly are often very afraid of saying anything for fear of retribution. I would have a serious discussion with your MIL to find out if anything else may be going on and how safe she really is.

We're not sure how long the bus ride was, but given the options it would be 12-16 hours. There are lots of unanswered questions, but the bottom line is BIL did not put her on the bus because it would be more comfortable or a better choice for her. He did it because he was mad about something.
I wouldn't be surprised if he was mad at her for not buying them plane tickets. He has no money, so they only fly if MIL or one of his girls pay.
MIL is from a culture that reveres men/boys and would not question or complain about being treated this way by a man. It is the rest of the family that is horrified. BIL knows he can't justify what he did, so let everyone believe they drove together. MIL let him get away with it because she didn't want anyone being mad at him.
As I said in the OP, our niece has already bought a ticket for MIL to fly home. She was so upset when she realized what her dad did she called my DH. We would never have heard about it from MIL.

Glad to hear that someone is looking out for her, just sad that they were not able to prevent this episode of stupidity on his part. I have a BIL who does this kind of rap so I sympathize-a lot of it is just born of stupidity and not real meanness-if he would just several seconds or maybe minutes (he's slow) to think of the consequences of his actions...........

I have an uncle like that. When my grandmother was hospitalized, my aunts had to fight to get him to leave her home. He had been abusive with her and stealing what little money she had. When he did finally leave he ended up pissing all over the walls, furniture, carpet and trashed the place. He disappeared for a while and we found out it was because he had been arrested. Too bad he's out now.
Anyway, hopefully from here on out your MIL will always get an airplane ticket for any future visits. That's a dirty rotten thing he did to her!
