Unbelieveable! Is it wrong to hope that his family treat him similarly when he is old and frail?

Wow. I can't even imagine the thought process involved in that. What a dick.

A rare Refupea-nanimous vote. We all concur that your BIL is an ass.

I'm assuming it was his dd that bought the plane ticket home. If so, at least the gene pool got some common sense along the way.

The jerk will be the one boo-hooing the most at her funeral, I bet, and the main reason will be GUILT. Sadly, he will be crying hard at her funeral one day, but I really don't think it will be because of guilt. My BIL had a strong sense of (unearned) entitlement and no guilt over taking what he thinks should be his or apologies for his behavior ever. That is a shame. I feel sorry for you and your DH having such a blatantly insensitive person in your family. I just hope your MIL is okay on her long trip and enjoys her time spent visiting family.

okay I thought my BIL was bad, but I think the OP wins that prize. My BIL is in the "business" (he works on tv shows until he gets fired because of his craphappy attitude) - he does have awful hours, but considering what $$ he is making for those hours, we basically feel he should suck it up buttercup.
My husband, on disability because his knee gave out, has been out of work since February. First ortho/HMO blew him off (he's not "old" enough to get a total knee replacement - which really means Kaiser Dr was a turd and we pulled him by sheer bad luck). Meanwhile, my MIL's companion dies and we have found out that she's not on any alzheimers meds ... and BIL announces he never wanted to be in charge of her, can't be in charge of her and since my husband has SO much time on his hands he can do it. My husband's knee is bone on bone and he's in pain all the time. But yeah, let's add that to his "to do" list. So we start checking homes, get drs appointments set up - and guess who decides that we're doing it all wrong because Alzheimers, Schmalzheimers, it's not all that bad. ARGH.
2nd opinion/new ortho doc tomorrow ... maybe a knee is in sight? Then we can kick BIL with it.

I hope your husband plans on having a little chat with his brother about this. And by little chat I mean beats the shit out of him.
