I think I'm just looking for some justification. I want to replace the furniture in my master bath (just a wall cabinet and a shelf) and put up new shower curtains, and do some of that simple cosmetic stuff. New window treatments in the living room and dining room...maybe some new wall art. I've had all this stuff for at least ten years, surely that's enough time to justify replacing some of it? I just want to do some cosmetic updating, nothing like remodeling, just a facelift. But I'm anticipating pushback from my DH, who thinks you hang onto stuff till it falls apart. How often do you facelift your rooms? What do you do when you facelift? What do you replace?

We move every 3 years ( miltary) and I usually change things up with each house. We just moved last month from Hawaii to Texas and our house here is much bigger so I have purchased a few new furniture and decorative pieces. I LOVE to decorate so I am always adding new things and moving things around.
10years is a long time to have the same things, I know my decorating style has changed in that time!

I've been married 12 years. Our first apartment was just a mish mash of garage sale items and wedding gifts. About a year in, I was able to actually purchase some things to decorate it. I just replaced those things a year and a half ago.
I bought new couches at that time-our first ever brand new ones, because our other ones had died. I was also sick of them and the overall decor.
So I guess I'm somewhere in between you and your hubby. Some of our stuff legitimately was in need of replacement, but after 10 years, I was sick of looking at it too.

I tend to replace gradually as I find new things I like rather than doing a complete overhaul at one time. But I would say ten years is plenty long enough to justify getting some new things!

I usually stay with the same decor for quite awhile but when the mood hits, I change things up. Updating your accessories is relatively cheap and can make a huge difference. IMO you don't need to justify anything. If you're tired of it and can afford to replace it just do it.

We have been together 20 years. We are on our third set of couches. I have new wall art and paint with each set. First set was super cheap and just got us by with small kids. Our bedroom still has white paint that we put on when we built 16 years ago. In four years when all kids are put, I plan on a big remodel of their rooms!

Accessories like inexpensive wall art and shower curtains - 2-3 years max. I haven't lived in a home for that long, but we've kept our "good" furniture at least 10 years - but even that we're thinking of replacing some of the pieces. Things need a face lift after a while, and changing out accessories is an inexpensive way to do it.

I don't really do a overhaul, but I do add things gradually. I have a lot of vintage/antique stuff, mixed in with newer stuff, mainly pictures. So it sort of stays timeless. Biggest decorating don'ts. NO fake flowers, vines, or junk around pictures and top of cupboards, cabinets, furniture, etc.

I don't think you need justification to change a shower curtain after 10 years!
We've lived in our house for almost 6 years and this year we have spent a good chunk of money redecorating out of necessity. We bought a new couch to replace a broken one, then rearranged our living room furniture placement, which opened up a large wall that needed decor so I put up a huge gallery wall. Other than some large house plants and decluttering, we haven't done much else to change the look of our house.
i would love to redecorate often but we don't have that kind of disposable income.

I change up things like throws and decorative pillows every couple of years. I also use quilts on the bed because I have three cats, so they need washing often. I can get a King size quilt at Steinmart or HomeGoods for around $30, so if I find one I like, I get it. With art, I'm definitely in the "if you love it, buy it" camp and since i prefer to buy things at antique stores or art fairs, that's definitely true. Unless I was spending a huge amount of money, I would just buy something and see how long it would take DH to even notice... You could also look at selling your old stuff on craigslist or donating it to Goodwill and consider the tax writeoff as your budget to buy new things. I'd love to paint my bedroom furniture. It's 8 years old and in a dark espresso finish that I'm tired of. I don't mind the style, but am over the color. DH is not sold yet.

In the past 10 years I have changed the color of my living room 3 times. I have repainted every room in the house and along with that come the new curtains, rugs, etc. I am easily bored and love to change things up. I am not normal according to my friends who have basic white rooms that have not changed so much as a picture on the wall in 10 years. Apparently they are distant relatives of your DH.

I go with about 10-15 years for a major overhaul (get rid of and replace big pieces of furniture such as couch, bed etc)...and I'm just at the tail end of it now. I repaint probably every 8-10 years.
For little things like a shower curtain or adding a shelf, I do that whenever the mood strikes me. I have a small bathroom so buying a few new accessories like a shower curtain, new bathmat in a different colour, new bin, soap dispenser etc is pretty cheap and would easily come in under $100-$150. I have just done it now and the last time was about 2 years ago.
Just make a start with the little things and then point out to your husband how a new shelf or a new cupboard would make it look even better or be more useful.

This is what I do. I find a little change freshens things enough that I don't need a big overhaul If you want a new look, go for it. Ten years ago was a different style.

If your tired of it and can afford to replace it go for it. We tend to keep things longer but getting to the point of wanting to replace. I want to replace our living room couches and tables. Hubby thought we could move the loveseat to our bedroom not sure what part of I'm sick of it he doesn't understand. Sofas are still in great condition and comfy but sick of color and out of date they are 15 years old tables are maybe 30 year old hand me downs that weren't looking great 18 years ago lol.
Shower curtains and s few accessories no problem changing but then I am cheap and don't buy expensive stuff so they can be replaced without too much guilt. We buy furniture that lasts but stuff like accessories are meant to be changed out.

Sprucing up the place is an ongoing task. Changing things up in a bathroom though is not something I'd consider involving DH in, except to let him know I was doing a little upgrading. So if a piece of new furniture arrived he wouldn't tell the delivery crew "You must have the wrong house". I understand your DH's position though, men really do seem to think you buy each piece of furniture once in your life. "Sorry, Chuckie Duckie, it doesn't work that way, now do you want to be consulted during selection or shall I just surprise you"?

We bought new furniture 2 years ago when we moved into the house we just moved from. The only 2 pieces we took from our trailer was the couch and our mattress. Last summer we replaced the couch. Basically we went with the same style couch just in a sectional with a darker brown color. When we moved here we kept everything but moved the golf stuff to the diningroom and replaced the nasty crappy cabinet and shelves in the craft room. The house we are in was so new the was no window treatments so we got to pick what we wanted. We still haven't hung the pictures on the walls yet. I would love to find some pillows for the couch. Husband wants to build a bar cabinet for the living room and a pantry cabinet in the dining room.

Every time I go to Home Goods. Seriously – I redecorate a lot. I'm not talking new paint, or new floors, or even big pieces of furniture. But I get bored and like to change things. Two summers ago, I sewed new curtains for my living room and got new throw pillows and put new things up on my walls. It was super cute. The colors were apple green and aqua blue. This summer, I have decided that I love navy. So I just sewed a brand-new navy curtains for my living room. Switched out the aqua pillows and accessories for Navy, got the most adorable little Navy club chair and a fun Ottoman to go with it. I am in LOVE with my living room right now. I've been meaning to post some pictures so y'all can tell me how awesome I am. I'll do that this weekend!

I'm constantly adding, editing, and moving stuff around. Seriously, all the time. My house is a work in progress, and it's never done. But I like the way it has evolved over time.

Minor cosmetic decorating happens with the changing of seasons in my home. Curtains, pillows, comforter/quilt and other linens are easy to change out. Big purchases like a living room set, bedroom furniture happens when it needs to be replaced or upgraded. Kinda like with appliances. My bathrooms change yearly. I have a thing for curtains and bedding so I have a nice collection that allows me to change things up pretty often.
In other words, please redecorate your bathroom. Have fun shopping!

Not as often as we should. We are just about to rip some windows out and replace them and upgrade the central heating which is as old as god's dog and is either on or off, there is no fine tuning.

There's no set time really. As and when generally, although for the sort of thing you mentioned I could justify it more often. We still have 2 rooms that haven't been touched since we moved in and they're way overdue so they'll be first before any more minor tweaks!

I change around the facelift things you mention, like shower curtains, small bits of furniture and wall art, quite regularly just to give a different look. Window voiles and nets are replaced quite often also just to keep them looking good......or I just buy a different set for that season and after that put them in storage to use again later! That way I'm not having to look at the same things year in, year out! We redecorate when a room begins to look a little tired and dingy and in need of a fresh coat of paint. Big things, carpet and big furniture are replaced much less often of course - usually when they break down or start to look shabby.

We just moved into this house four years ago and while it's completely decorated, I'll probably never stop changing up things.
The hard case furniture is virtually all antique pieces that I can't see us ever changing. But the soft goods (couches, upholstered chairs, mattresses, bed coverings, draperies, pillows, etc) are all fair game for me changing my mind!
I have no set schedule for it. It's more either an impulse to freshen a room or I find "that perfect piece" I've been seeking for a certain space.
And then I have old tried-and-true pieces like "my chair." I have had it since I purchased it for my first apartment while in graduate school. It has been reupholstered three times and I had an ottoman built to match it early on. I've moved it to nine different houses. It's just the perfect chair. I keep having the seat re-plumped and new fabric put on it because I can't find another chair I like better. I'm curled up in it right now with my coffee and laptop!

Oh I'm sorry - I'll be no help!
We built this house (just a builder subdivision) and were here 5 years in February. I never hung pictures & paintings, because "I'll wait until the nail pops are fixed and we paint" - so they are all in boxes in the basement.
But this is the year of "operation equity" where we finally start spending money on the house. (I lost my job 8 months after moving, and started my cake biz, so we were really tight for a while)
Now all 3 kids rooms are painted, the main bath upstairs and the powder room on the main floor are done as well. And the powder rooms were "done done" like with accessories and decor and everything. That is new for me!
That said, even though we've only been here 5 years, the carpet in the family room is going away - we hate it, and would prefer hardwood. And I would love nothing more than to gut our master bathroom and re-do it. We didn't change anything from the builder plan, and I'm sorry we didn't give it more thought. It is way big, and echo-y. There is a wall that a furniture piece could go on, but the stupid furnace vent is smack in the middle, so I have to search for something that has "legs" so the air can flow.
But I say do it!!

I change things like colour, decor and accessories when I get tired of them.
The livingroom furniture, I replace every 8 or 9 years. We just bought all new livingroom and diningroom furniture, along with a new headboard and antique dresser since December.
I say if you feel you need a change, go for it.

I like to change some things seasonally. I will change out accessories randomly throughout the years, as I stumble across something I like.
Now my kitchen - we are finally remodeling after 28 years. Think blue laminate countertops from 1987! We replaced all the flooring in the LR, DR, and kitchen at the same time.
Next is the family room, I hope!
