Never ranch with Buffalo chicken. It must be blue cheese!

This is a stupid question but I'll be at the store in a few and im wondering if there is a different taste in the Ranch packet dip and the Ranch dressing packet mix?
I'm also looking for a good ranch.

Thanks everyone. I hate blue cheese so only ranch for me. My luck, my store was completely cleaned out of the Hidden Valley Ranch dressing mix packets this morning. I had the HV ranch dip packets at home so I decided to just use that with some sour cream and some mayo plus milk. Like the poster above, I'm wondering what the difference is between the dip and dressing. I make the dip mix quite frequently but have never bought the dressing mix.
I'm not sure I'll use any of the mayo if it taste okay with just the sour cream. I am using the ranch dressing with a bag of shredded cabbage to make a cole slaw to put on the buffalo chicken sandwiches.

Buffalo anything needs blue cheese..not ranch. We don't dip our Buffalo wings in ranch...it's blue cheese. The same with Buffalo chicken wing dip...sorry just had to add my two cents...LOL I agree it should be blue cheese, but we don't like bc so we use ranch.

There's some adamant dressing lovers on here. But if we don't like Blue cheese, does that mean we shouldn't eat Buffalo Chicken? That seems a little narrow minded to me. I'd imagine most of us know that traditionally Blue Cheese is served with hot wings, especially if we've ever watched the Food Network. But they'll also tell you that Red Velvet cake should have cream cheese frosting, when I've found it to go well with Caramel and Vanilla Buttercream. Different strokes for different folks, ya know. We are all going to eat what we want with whatever we want. Pointing out that the OP is just wrong about her selection based on your experiences with a local treat seems odd. I get that people are passionate about food but it seemed like there was a tone to some of these posts. If I am wrong, I apologize. I found the first one odd but thought maybe they were trying to be informative and genuinely thought OP did't know. But as others pointed it out afterwards, it just felt strange to me I guess.

I think the 'homemade' ranch from the powder mix is great.
But wings are traditionally served with blue cheese dressing.

Oh for crying out loud...It was a comment that was made. But yeah no eating wings if you don't use blue cheese... Oh and blue cheese is served with all wings..mild medium hot extra hot. There was no "tone"...SMH

I love blue cheese dressing with buffalo wings, but most of my friends and family prefer ranch. Regular blue cheese is an acquired taste so I think that's why many go with ranch.

Here in Canada, the Irresistibles line from Food Basics/Metro has a delicious buttermilk ranch dressing. I was never a real fan of ranch until I tried this and now it's my favourite.

I buy the Hidden Valley Ranch powder and make it myself. I use combination of Mayo and Sour Cream. If you don't like the mayo taste, use mostly sour cream and add a little milk. Totally.

I'm also looking for a good ranch. Honestly, I think they're the same. I just change how I make them if I want dip vs. dressing, but I use whichever packet I happen to have on hand.

I want to make the Buffalo Chicken sliders from the countrycook.net website that was mentioned last week and an important part of that is Ranch Dressing.
Do you buy a bottled dressing that taste really high quality? I hate the taste of mayo and most bottled creamy dressings but when I go to restaurants, they always make really good ranch. What about the jars that are usually refrigerated (I think Marie Calendars and one that starts with Mez...)?
THanks. I HATE with a passion, the taste of Mayo. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the taste of homemade Ranch dressing, made with the packed of Buttermilk Ranch mix, 1 cup buttermilk, and one cup Hellmans mayo. I love it so much I think I could drink it! LOL And I cannot begin to convey my dislike for Mayo. .... So give it a shot. For me - it must be Hellmans. I also buy two packets (also must be Buttermilk ranch mix). I add one full packet and probably a quarter of the second packet. Use real liquid buttermilk when mixing it up. Mix it up several hours or a day before for best flavor. I could sit down and eat an entire bag of baby carrots dipped in this stuff.

My favorite restaurant ranch is for Wingstop. My DS and DD worked there. They make theirs. It is a ready made form Sysco. Made with buttermilk. I will normally buy it by the pint. BUT I have been making my own Ranch because I can't stand any store bought ones. I use the Pioneer Woman's recipe and played around with it to our liking.

As an FYI for anyone who wants to take iowgirl's suggestion, it's only Hellmann's mayo in part of the country. West of the Rockies, it is Best Foods.

Yeah it has to be Hidden Valley Ranch dry BUTTERMILK recipe, not the regular one...so like someone else said a tiny bit less than a cup of mayo and a little more (tiny bit) than a cup of Buttermilk.
So easy..and really good if you like ranch..no comparison to bottled or the non buttermilk kind!

I am pretty picky about my ranch. I HATE it runny!! And i don't like it lumpy. I am not a blue cheese fan. I do like the Lighthouse stuff too. Althgouth I do like the Kroger stuff. Kraft is a little too bitter but I'll go for it if it's on hand but I prefer Kroger. The one we have here seems to be really good . Hidden Velley is okay but not my favorite.

I use an immersion blender to blend mine together -no lumps. You can make it thicker by slightly backing off on the buttermilk - but it does thicken up a bit after you refrigerate it. I love the Lighthouse blue cheese also. I tried their Ranch - I wasn't a fan. I don't like the pre-made Hidden Valley Ranch now that I have started making my own. It seems to sour now.

For those who make homemade ranch dressing, how long can you keep it? We don't seem to use a bottle of dressing very quickly, so I'd worry about spoilage.

Hands down Amy's Kitchen dressing. I had gone to a really nice restaurant at the Keys and was always wanted to bring their salad dressing back. Until I bought Amy's Kitchen salad dressing @ Whole foods.

Another fan of Ken's. DH and I were out to dinner once and I mentioned to the waitress how good the Ranch dressing was, and she said they use Ken's. I'd never heard of it before then, but that's all I use now (and, the Greek dressing is awesome also--my second favorite).
I did Pin the Ranch recipe linked above because I'd like to try it at some point.

Whod've thought there would be a handslap on a ranch dressing thread? LOL Even though you didn't quote me, I figure there's a good chance you are referring to me because my post did sound that way. It wasn't meant to be handslappy so much as WTH. We were discussing one thing then someone came on and pointed out that traditionally what the OP was doing was wrong based on her experience. I pointed out that while that was true, and helpful, it didn't need to be repeated 2 or 3 more times. It was not going to change OP's mind and didn't seem helpful and almost like chastising her. I also apologized in advance if I was misreading their intent. Yeah, it's dressing. It could just as easily have been shoes or child rearing. OP was being told she was doing it wrong and I felt like there wasn't a wrong here, just preference. Back on topic: These recipes look really good. As much as I love mine, I'm going to try these out.

Yea see i don't mind the HV stuff from the dry package I posted the recipe we use on potatoes and other stuff but for salad dressing it's definately different. I don't know why. LOL! I tell DH i like my ranch thick! So does he at least when it comes to dipping stuff.
