Could I? Yes. Would I ever want to? No. I grew up in a small trailer house. I appreciate the space.

I've told dh that if something happened to him where I ended up alone and the boys were grown up and on their own, I'd buy a rv and just move from campground to campground. If it was just me.

I grew up in a 600 sq ft house with 7 people, 2 bedrooms, 1 bath. Waaaay tooooooo smaaaaaall.
The house I live in now is almost twice that with 4 people, 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom. Small, but roomy compared to my parents' house.

Didnt we use to call these studios and flats and celebrate when we moved up in the world and got closets?
I could downsize, and could stand to live with less and enjoy it. But for now it's nice to have some space. Our downsizing will come soon enough.

No way. And yet my DH is obsessed with them. He's constantly talking about when we move into one someday... Ironically, he's the biggest pack rat I know! He couldn't downsize enough to make it happen. But even knowing that, hearing him go on and on about them drives me batty! I keep telling myself to let it go!

I could if either I was in an urban environment where I could walk everywhere, walking distance to the beach or on a beautiful piece of land. I think the outside environment is a lot more important than the inside. Totally agree with this. We were just looking at a place while we were on vacation that was very small - 620 sf - with a beautiful partially covered deck on a gorgeous piece of land with lots of recreation options within walking and biking distance. We absolutely could live there. We'd have to pare down our possessions and be clever with a workspace since I work from home, but it could be doable and enjoyable given the location and land. But a tiny house plopped down in the 'burbs? No way.

My DS is 6'6.5 and 250 lbs. I don't think it would work for us. We spend 20-30 days a year in hotel rooms together. That's enough closeness.

I lived in a 700 sq ft NYC apartment for 10 years. I sew and do art and was able to make it work by being organized and not accumulating extra unneeded stuff. It's not ideal, but it's definitely do-able. The nicest thing about it, besides living in the heart of a big city, is that it feels very light and freeing not to have a lot of unused, unnecessary belongings around. Not for everyone, but I was very happy. That is just how I imagine it would be, light and freeing. That's my fantasy life -living in an apartment in NYC & making a living from home, on my own terms. I don't even need much of a kitchen, because my fantasy involves going out to restaurants and eating take out & delivery most of the time. I could turn my kitchen into an office like Carol Radziwill did on RHONYC.

We did this of a sorts when our house was being remodeled, and we lived in a small trailer in our driveway for 4 months. I liked that we really pared down what possessions we moved into it so it was super easy to keep clean and tidy. DS was only 3 at the time and he wasn't overwhelmed by an explosion of toys. I might consider it if it had really high ceilings and it were designed by a space and storage planning genius and I didn't have to climb into a sleeping loft. (And DH didn't live with me--he's too messy and disorganized) I forgot that he was in Sweden on business for a long time that summer. Yet the shows I've seen on HGTV just leave me thinking the people who do this are kind of insane.

I could not live in one at this stage in my life. I'm enjoying not having to I guess. But I do find them fascinating.

In most of the tiny houses I've seen you sleep in a loft. There's no way I could climb a ladder up to a loft every night

Already working on it. We went from 3500 sq ft house to 1100 sq ft.house And we also have a 30ft RV. In our current house we still have a basement that does nothing but holds stuff and a dining room converted to craft room we never use. It just holds more stuff. DS19 is already planning his tiny house. The other kids want one too.
When DD9 graduates from HS we are selling our house and moving into the RV full time. We are also looking at smaller RV's too.

I think my house is pretty small by American standards. Although we have 4 bedrooms, all the rooms are pretty small. I wouldn't want to live in anything smaller with my three kids, but if I was on my own, smaller would be a very good idea for me. I tend to accumulate and spread into a space : a small space would hopefully mean less stuff and a tidier home too! This was not my experience. Our small house had NO storage space so if you do anything at all there is nowhere to put your stuff even if you limited what you did. It was actually harder to keep the house clean because it was difficult to access every corner of the house since there was nowhere to put anything away.

In the right location, I could... If there was a market nearby, a library, safe streets/parks to walk along, a lively neighbourhood with stuff happening, etc... I would have a hard time if I was in a subdivision where you had to drive to get everywhere and the neighbourhood was all residential/static...

As much as I wake at night to use the restroom and as unsteady as I am, I would be taking my life in my hands every time I time I tried to navigate a loft at night in the dark .

While I'd totally LOVE to downsize right this very minute, it seems to me that the "novelty" of downsizing to something micro would wear off very quickly.
Edited to add...I get rid of stuff. I am not a packrat. (unless you count my scrap supplies) My DH has stuff in his closet that he hasn't worn in 25 yrs. I tried to "encourage" him to donate them to Goodwill (t-shirts, sweatshirts...the stuff that really isn't dated) and he says they have "sentimental meaning". I asked him if they could have "sentimental meaning" packed in a box and labelled and stacked neatly in the basement.
They're still in the closet. GRRRRR!

I have spent several months at a time in tiny spaces. I lived in a lookout (10x10) for over 2 months.. In college, my room (with bathroom and a cupboard with a hotplate) was 12x12...and I lived there 2 years. as an adult? with stuff? no. I like my family things.

When we go to IKEA and I see the way the 580 square foot space is decorated, I think it is cute. And then the walls start closing around me. Nope, couldn't do it. Right now we have about 3000 square feet and there are four humans and two dogs. It is the right amount of space and all of the rooms are used every single day. My house is paid for and our taxes are pretty low and I am willing to pay for utilities to keep my sanity.

I absolutely could. I would love a small studio sized place. 300 square feet would be perfect for me.
I would want to design it myself though. I have watch many episodes of tiny house on hgtv. I love the tiny houses, but was not a fan of many of the interior designs. I dislike built ins and all wood interiors. I also do not like ladder access to the loft area, must have actual stairs(love spiral staircases).
I would also want it to be permanently placed, with actual water and electrical connections, and an actual drainage system. A studio apartment is great, but a tiny house with no shared walls would be awesome.

I could do a tiny apartment, if it meant I could live in NYC. Me too!!! I always think those tiny houses are so cute. i could definitely do it - if I lived alone. The hardest part would be downsizing my closet. The rest of my "stuff" I could care less about. Except my keurig - I need to keep that! Or the RV thing, I could totally do that too. My ideal dream would be 6 months in NYC & 6 months in the middle of the rocky mountains, preferably Banff area

No desire to live in a tiny home. Our first home was 1100 sq ft and that was to small.

Probably not. Given I'm not fond of heights or ladders, I would be unable to (safely) utilize the loft space. The smallest place I've ever lived - my first apartment without roommates - was 950 sq ft, so I may quickly become claustrophobic!

For the first few years after I left home, I never lived in a place that was more than 500 square feet. I became claustrophobic as a result. So, never again.

I lived in a tiny, tiny apartment in NYC (around 120 sq ft). I think I could live in a tiny home alone if it had all the amenities. I don't need much space but I do need hot water, indoor plumbing and heating and cooling systems. I think I would get four tiny homes (one for each family member) and put them around a swimming pool. We lived in our 24 foot motorhome for 6 months on 2 occasions and it was fine. But our furniture was in storage and most people with 'Tiny Houses' are living in them as their only home. Just my glass room is the size of some of those tiny houses, and I have craft stuff in 2 more rooms. I love the little houses but to walk away from my 'stuff' would be heart wrenching.
