I would like to know how you tip your hair stylist. Do you give a percentage of the total cost or a set amount? Either way, how much? Thank you!!

I don't tip. My hairdresser is an old friend, and owns the salon. It would feel odd to tip her. Sorry, I'm no help!

I generally tip my stylist 20%. However, when she has the shop assistant finish my color, I cut her tip in half, because she knows I don't like it. I always tip the assistant $5, no matter what she does (she usually washes my hair twice.)

I give twenty percent of the cost of the service just like a waiter or waitress.

Usually 20+% here. She does my hair and all 3 of my girls. She is great.

I go to a lady that charges a specific amount and no tipping is needed. That said, I don't think she charges enough, so I give a very generous tip (more than 30%)

I tip 50% of the total cost. I give a separate amount to the person who washes my hair (not the stylist). Why? Lots of reasons 1) He's in a ritzy part of town in a fancy salon. 2) He styles celebrities. 3) I'm not a celebrity. 4) I don't go in as regularly as his other customers, but there's never a problem with accomodating my schedule. 5) I feel comfortable with him. (which earns him bonus points) 6) He's always prompt (more bonus points) 7) He does an incredible job EVERY TIME. He turns my bumbling suggestions into amazing haircuts- I get asked regularly where I get my hair done. 8) He's super DUPER clean. I'm a tad picky about this issue (read: a lot picky) I had ONE hairstylist for about 20 years or so and I would treat her the same. I would follow her from salon to salon until she retired. I actually spent like an entire year without going to a stylist because I was researching new stylists. Until someone recommended this guy and they were spot on. don't do anything complicated with my hair, but it's so easy to *f* up a layered BOB. I honestly think styling hair is a craft, and I want him to know that I appreciate him.

I have been going to the same stylist for 25 years I go every five weeks and tip her 20%. Even though she hasn't taken new clients for quite a few years she agreed to do my curly-haired grandson's hair a few months ago. She does my DD's hair and is a genius with curly hair. I take my grandson about once a month and tip her 50% on his hair. We we all love her and know her DH and kids. I take baked goods for her to take home to her family quite often. My appt. is always at 10:00 in the morning so sometimes I'll stop and get fresh hot caramel rolls, lunch from Panera or a sub for her to have when she's done with me. Sometimes I bring enough and we eat together

I don't have a set percentage. When dh and ds go together, I think their total is about $22-25 and they give $3. When I go with them, the total is different and then I just add an amount to it, depending on what the total is. I'm probably not even consistent from visit to visit. I would not say it is 20% though.

I tip 18% because it turns into an easy round number, and I always pay cash. My stylist owned the salon, but I tipped anyway. I think she has sold it - not sure - but she still works there.
If someone else does my hair wash (which happens sometimes), I give her a few bucks separately.

I give about 25% which is about $10. my niece is the owner and my stylist. At Chrustmas I do much more. She doesn't charge me less than anyone else, I still have to call for an appointment. But I love the girl, and I feel I can get after her a little too if she cuts wrong!!! Ha!

I love my stylist and DH, the kids and I all go to her. We tip 20% on each of us. She does a great job. She also does the wash, so I don't have to tip someone else for that.
No way would I tip 50%! My highlights/cut are already close to $200 (with tip). But it sounds like M~ really likes the guy.

I don't spend anywhere near what you spend at the salon-even tipping 50%.

My new salon doesn't take tips on credit cards anymore - only cash - so I now tip $40 when I get a cut and color and $20 when it's just a cut. Those are both a bit over 20%, but it's easier to manage than exactly 20% in cash.

My stylist is the owner, she rents her station and I always tip her 20% of whatever the bill is. She is fine with whatever you want to tip but honestly she does a great job and wouldn't think of it being any less.

I usually tip 20% too. Awhile ago I went to see a stylist my sister recommended that worked in a upscale salon in downtown Annapolis. I loved her cut and everything about her, although the stylists there charge $100.00 for just a haircut! This stylist told me that for some of her customers she will come to their homes and cut their hair there for half cost. I've had her do that once, and it's been great, but it's been awhile-back in December. She has me wash my hair before she comes, and because it's curly it just air drys when she's finished. Should I stick with the 20%-is that enough? I'm sorry to butt in OP-it's just such an unusual situation.

I honestly think styling hair is a craft, and I want him to know that I appreciate him. They must adore you! Can I ask how much you pay for a hair cut or cut and color? I go to a fabulous color salon in a pricier than average area, owned by a man who appears on TV now and then for makeovers. It's not cheap and I cannot envision tipping 50% on anything except when I first went and my hair was done by a trainee for $35. I actually tipped her $20 because she was excellent and I paid $35 for cut, color and highlights sometimes! She's now fully trained and her prices are now "Level 1". So, for her, a cut is $50, single process color is $65 and highlights run $50-125, depending on how much you have done. I generally pay around $170 the visits when I have highlights and $110 for other visits. I did just get a notice that her prices were going up. If I saw the master stylists, I'd pay $95 for just a haircut, $90 for single process, etc. I must be cheap because I cannot envision paying 50% at these rates every 6 weeks. And that's just for me. My dd gets her hair done there too!

Could someone explain to me the logistics of tipping the assistant. My stylist recently moved up a level and now an assistant often does the shampoo and sometimes finishes up the coloring. The assistant then disappears. I usually just add the tip for my stylist to my credit card. How would I go about dividing the tip between the stylist and her assistant?
