That's about what I pay. I go every six weeks because my gray shows horribly at the roots. Sometimes I need more coloring work (highlights and/or lowlights) and the price is at the higher end. Sometimes is just a trim plus gray management (roots) so it's at the lower end.
I tip 15%, rounding up, which is the usual rate at this salon for someone who has a standing cut&color appointment. I pay the tip in cash directly to my stylist (same person each visit). I also give $5 to the gal who does the shampooing.

I usually tip 20% too. Awhile ago I went to see a stylist my sister recommended that worked in a upscale salon in downtown Annapolis. I loved her cut and everything about her, although the stylists there charge $100.00 for just a haircut! This stylist told me that for some of her customers she will come to their homes and cut their hair there for half cost. I've had her do that once, and it's been great, but it's been awhile-back in December. She has me wash my hair before she comes, and because it's curly it just air drys when she's finished. Should I stick with the 20%-is that enough? I'm sorry to butt in OP-it's just such an unusual situation. Debbie in MD. No need to apologize! That is a tough question though! You are washing your own hair, using your water, towels, products, etc., but she now has travel expenses. I can see both sides of it, but if you really like the job she does and like the convenience of her coming to your home, why not stick with 20%. Heck, she is charging you half of what you would pay to go to the salon, so you are saving. Geez, I am all over the place with my reply! Sorry I am not much help!

I do really like that she comes to my home because my budget is very limited, and I'm saving a great deal by having her cut my hair at home. She is an amazing hair stylist and we get along wonderfully. I also gave her two more clients (my other sister and my mother) who she is happy to cut their hair at home which is a such a wonderful thing for my youngest sis since she's on disability and it's hard for the to get out much. Anyway, I think you're right-I'll keep the tip at 20%. I usually set out tea and cookies or something like that when she comes. Thanks again. Debbie in MD.

I tip 50% of the total cost. I give a separate amount to the person who washes my hair (not the stylist). Why? Lots of reasons 1) He's in a ritzy part of town in a fancy salon. 2) He styles celebrities. 3) I'm not a celebrity. 4) I don't go in as regularly as his other customers, but there's never a problem with accomodating my schedule. 5) I feel comfortable with him. (which earns him bonus points) 6) He's always prompt (more bonus points) 7) He does an incredible job EVERY TIME. He turns my bumbling suggestions into amazing haircuts- I get asked regularly where I get my hair done. 8) He's super DUPER clean. I'm a tad picky about this issue (read: a lot picky) I had ONE hairstylist for about 20 years or so and I would treat her the same. I would follow her from salon to salon until she retired. I actually spent like an entire year without going to a stylist because I was researching new stylists. Until someone recommended this guy and they were spot on. don't do anything complicated with my hair, but it's so easy to *f* up a layered BOB. I honestly think styling hair is a craft, and I want him to know that I appreciate him. They must adore you! Can I ask how much you pay for a hair cut or cut and color? I go to a fabulous color salon in a pricier than average area, owned by a man who appears on TV now and then for makeovers. It's not cheap and I cannot envision tipping 50% on anything except when I first went and my hair was done by a trainee for $35. I actually tipped her $20 because she was excellent and I paid $35 for cut, color and highlights sometimes! She's now fully trained and her prices are now "Level 1". So, for her, a cut is $50, single process color is $65 and highlights run $50-125, depending on how much you have done. I generally pay around $170 the visits when I have highlights and $110 for other visits. I did just get a notice that her prices were going up. If I saw the master stylists, I'd pay $95 for just a haircut, $90 for single process, etc. I must be cheap because I cannot envision paying 50% at these rates every 6 weeks. And that's just for me. My dd gets her hair done there too! Yea, my girl was new when I started with her, but several years later she's a master stylist. It's painful. But she's REALLY good. I stretch my visits to every 9 weeks but can't go any longer. I tip 20%. She actually JUST left the salon she's been at for years, and went out on her own (at one of the new "Salon Lofts.") I'm wondering how that will affect her pricing....

I pay $20 and he tries to give me change, but I make him keep it. I've been doing this for years.
I guess I should find out what he's charging now. I might just be tipping him a dollar.
Why do some stylists have assistants? Are they doing the washing part to free up the stylist for the true talent part of the work?
I'm so out of touch and freaked out by the prices you all are paying!

oh heck, I just went today and round up to the next round number and it was more like 10% for the owner, for a color and cut, now I feel cheap. And I am going to say this, I feel a bit awkward tipping the owner because I feel owners set their prices. I'm much better at being told this is the price, pay it rather than guessing what is appropriate for each situation. The place I go, the stylists rent their 'booth' and therefore keep all the money you pay, I think. I see what you mean about not understanding what's the thing to do based on if the person is hourly or 'an owner'.

I don't understand why it is necessary to tip. It isn't like they are making sub-minimum wage like a server in a restaurant. The price should just be the price. It always gives me anxiety to go to a decent salon. The last time I went I had a woman who cut, one who shampooed and dried and another one who colored. I did not bring that many bills to tip all of them...and was sort of irritated that I was feeling forced to do so. I think I walked out of that salon WAY overpaying! I never went back. Today I go to a quick cut place. My hair is straight and I wear it in a long blunt cut, so you can't really screw it up. If I get into the salon before 9AM my cut is $8.00. I usually go with semi-wet hair, as they charge more for a wash. I give her $10 and call it a day. I do all my own coloring at home. I'm not really a cheapskate, but the tipping issues really stress me out. I don't want to look like a jerk, but I don't want to just throw money away either. I cannot believe what you women are paying for your hair. Impressive!
