I tip 50% of the total cost. I give a separate amount to the person who washes my hair (not the stylist). Why? Lots of reasons 1) He's in a ritzy part of town in a fancy salon. 2) He styles celebrities. 3) I'm not a celebrity. 4) I don't go in as regularly as his other customers, but there's never a problem with accomodating my schedule. 5) I feel comfortable with him. (which earns him bonus points) 6) He's always prompt (more bonus points) 7) He does an incredible job EVERY TIME. He turns my bumbling suggestions into amazing haircuts- I get asked regularly where I get my hair done. 8) He's super DUPER clean. I'm a tad picky about this issue (read: a lot picky) I had ONE hairstylist for about 20 years or so and I would treat her the same. I would follow her from salon to salon until she retired. I actually spent like an entire year without going to a stylist because I was researching new stylists. Until someone recommended this guy and they were spot on. don't do anything complicated with my hair, but it's so easy to *f* up a layered BOB. I honestly think styling hair is a craft, and I want him to know that I appreciate him. Ok, M, now you know we all want to see a picture of your hair!

I try to tip 20%. Sometimes it is a little more, sometimes it is less. It depends on how much cash I have on hand.

I would like to know how you tip your hair stylist. Do you give a percentage of the total cost or a set amount? Either way, how much? Thank you!! I pay $37 for wash/cut/style. I round up to $50. That's probably excessive but I adore my stylist. He's worth it.

Carrie-No pictures! I have to make another appointment-I've not gone since March and it's messy! Melissa, I don't color my hair. (Imagine thick, dark (almost black), Latin hair--that's me) I just cut. It's difficult hair to deal with, honestly. He charges $80 for just a cut and blow dry. So I tip him $40.00. See--less than what you all pay!

I love my hair stylist. I get my haircut every 4 weeks and it costs $25 and I leave a $10 tip. I think its just because my stylist is awesome and takes her time and actually listens to what I want. I had a hard time finding a good stylist previously.

I don't have a percent, she just gets $30 every time no matter what the cost or what I had done. $40 if it's Christmas time. I could probably be a bit more generous, but the prices are already higher than I like. Actually my DD does my hair now as she's in cosmetology school. She really is good, I was impressed with how my color turned out. I tip her $100, technically she can't charge anything yet until she has her license. Still way cheaper than the salon.

Holy wow! Every time I read these threads I thank my lucky stars that I live in a small town. I can't even imagine paying what some of you have posted here. My sister-in-law owns her own salon. I know she gives me 'family pricing' but I just checked the rates online at the most expensive salon in town and they're still not that high. We have dozens of salons in town, so that may keep the rates down, I don't know.
I have long (mid-back) hair and this is what I get done: Shampoo and condition, color (all-over foils in 2 or 3 colors depending on what look we are going for that time) trim or cut, blow-dry, curl, brows and 'mustache' waxed. She charges me $40. I write the check for $65.
She does an awesome job, so over the past 10 years I have sent her maybe 10 permanent customers just because they've asked who does my hair. So, may be another reason she gives me such a great deal. Whatever the reason, I am thankful.

Wow, Happymomma, that's a bargain I have thick shoulder length hair. I go every 6 weeks for cut, color, and highlights. It comes to $150 before tip. I usually tip $30, so 20%. I was paying more for just cut and single process color at a different salon. I love this stylist and salon - my hair has never looked better... and she gives me wine

So I get my hair done at the local beauty school. The only reason I go there is because the instructors are amazing! I can walk out with a great cut, color and generally some kind of hand or foot massage for less than $40. I normally tip $5 if I only get a cut (cuts run $7) $10 if I get other services. Takes longer than a salon but can't beat the price. There is always the risk of a hair disaster but in three years it has only happened once. And it was really more my faulth than theirs. I thought I wanted something I really didn't.

I started going to a new (to me) stylist. She charges $50 or a cut and blow out. I tip $10 or 20%. Brows are $15 and I tip $5 to make $80.

WOW you all pay a lot! I get highlights and lowlites plus a purple streak or two (foils), a cut and eyebrows and pay about $65 - I generally tip around ten or fifteen dollars. Thinking now I should be tipping more. She is great and has been doing my hair for ten years also she owns the shop. My hair is long to mid back, but when it was longer she still did not charge more.

oh heck, I just went today and round up to the next round number and it was more like 10% for the owner, for a color and cut, now I feel cheap. And I am going to say this, I feel a bit awkward tipping the owner because I feel owners set their prices. I'm much better at being told this is the price, pay it rather than guessing what is appropriate for each situation.

I pay $45 for a wash/cut/style roughly every 8-10 weeks and I give my hair guy a $10 tip every time. He owns the salon and I always pay cash. I have a head full of weird cowlicks and he knows how to tame the stupid things! I don't bother with color, highlights or any of that other stuff because that would mean I'd have to go there even more often and I'm way too busy and too cheap for that. I have a hard time getting in there before my hair is driving me nuts as it is!

maryland, the guy that owns the shop where I go actually IS one of the people you see who do the ambush makeovers! You should have seen the day I brought in my dd when she had the box dye disaster. He and his team were magical! m~, no wonder! You don't go very often either! I used to be like that too when I had longer hair and didn't dye it. I miss those days sometimes, at least my wallet misses them!

This is also my experience. I live in a town so small that there's not even anywhere to get your hair done unless you drive to the neighboring town. There used to be a couple of home-based salons that catered mostly to older women, but as far as I know they're no longer in business.
My sister-in-law is a licensed hair stylist, so she does my hair. She does a really fantastic job and a lot of the time she refuses to accept payment of any kind. My husband has been known to slyly slip the money into her purse when she's not paying attention, lol.
Before I was married, I went to a stylist that my sister's went to. I always tipped at least 20%, but usually it was a bit more as I'd typically round up to the next dollar.

I go every 6 weeks for cut and color and pay $150. I tip $20. I've been going to the same guy for 3 years and his prices have increased as he's moved up the hierarchy at the salon. I have maintained the $20 tip. Unfortunately I have my limits. If I hit $200 I'm going to have to rethink. I can't justify that much on my damn hair.
ETA: I pay $20 on top of $150 so $170 total. Every six weeks...ugh it's kinda sickening to write that.

Right now, it's slightly longer than chin length and it's driving me crazy. I get it cut right above the ears. Yes. I am lucky. My hair is that almost black color still I have a few strands of not gray but that silvery white hair but really, at 43, I'm lucky to not have to dye it. It's too dark to play around with color. My friends hate me because of this.

I usually get mine done for free by a friend, so no tip but if I do go to a hairdresser maybe 2 euros..its just not the culture here. The other problem is you get the next stylist that is available not one that you've had before or asked for.

They must adore you! Can I ask how much you pay for a hair cut or cut and color? I go to a fabulous color salon in a pricier than average area, owned by a man who appears on TV now and then for makeovers. It's not cheap and I cannot envision tipping 50% on anything except when I first went and my hair was done by a trainee for $35. I actually tipped her $20 because she was excellent and I paid $35 for cut, color and highlights sometimes! She's now fully trained and her prices are now "Level 1". So, for her, a cut is $50, single process color is $65 and highlights run $50-125, depending on how much you have done. I generally pay around $170 the visits when I have highlights and $110 for other visits. I did just get a notice that her prices were going up. If I saw the master stylists, I'd pay $95 for just a haircut, $90 for single process, etc. I must be cheap because I cannot envision paying 50% at these rates every 6 weeks. And that's just for me. My dd gets her hair done there too! $170 isn't too bad, Melissa, considering he's almost a *celeb*stylist. Mine is $150, and that's standard for the area she's in. I love her, she's great at hair, but she's middle of the road, if you know what I mean. And I do the standard 20%.

I tip "too much."
I rarely get my hair cut (well, washed & cut), but when I do, the fee is around $20, and I tip $10, so 50%.
But if I'm getting my toddler's hair cut (who is a nervous kid and needs coaxing), I tip 100% or more. The last haircut for him cost $14 and I tipped $16 on top of it. It is worth it. The whole time the stylist talked nicely to him, distracting him while she cut his hair very nicely, and very quickly.
