It's time to dump and purge.
What kinds of things have you found in your purse when it reaches this point? Or are you one of those people who keeps her purse "just so"?
And why and when did women get saddled with purses? I have a friend who doesn't carry one. She also doesn't wear a winter coat.
But most of us, as little girls, just blithely accept, even look forward to, this burden of the satchel.

The last time I cleaned out my purse I found an entire bag of Jelly Belly jelly beans emptied in the bottom of one section. Oddly, I do not like jelly beans, so they must have been there for one of the children. In addition to my purse, I have a work bag that hold my purse, lunch and whatever that needs to be cleaned out this weekend. I think I have 3 months worth of pay stubs to be filed in there.

It never even occurred to me not to carry a purse. I like having one. I guess I like hauling a bunch of random crap around with me as I never know what I might want on hand. But now I type that out, it seems pretty stupid.

I've stopped buying large purses. Small purse can't carry all of the crap that makes a purse too heavy.

I purposely choose purses that are barely large enough to carry what I consider essentials. That way there isn't room to slowly accumulate other stuff in there. A bit sadly the right size purse IS hard to find. Most of them are way too big so I know I'll end up toting loads of stuff I don't need to be hauling.

It's just something most of us do, because we're conditioned to.

I cleaned mine out last night and it was mostly receipts and notes. I have a big purse that I take with me but I leave it in the car and just carry my wallet around. I made a large one recently that is like a wallet and clutch combined and put a wrist strap and a regular strap on it, both removable, so that I can use it whichever way works best for where I'm going.
eta: I also had about a pound of change in mine.

I agree the right sized purse seems to be elusive.
I've either bought it to fit my wallet, cell phone and nothing else - or it is too big and I cram it full of stuff I need to toss or put away.
The one thing I found when cleaning out my purse a couple of years ago that perplexed me was a pair of socks rolled up. I couldn't for the life of me remember putting them in there - and then why did I put them in there? I'm in Arizona for heavens sake - I only wear socks when I have tennis shoes on - and that is rare unless working out. Why this random purse?
Well, I had been to my OB/Gyn about 5 months prior, had not used the purse until a few months later. Of course I had put them in to put on my feet in the ever freezing ob/gyn office!

My dh and sons call my purse "The Wrecking Ball". I cleaned a ton of change out of it yesterday. I had over $10 of quarters alone.
I did not carry a purse in college and it was heavenly! Now, I need to carry my reading glasses, sun glasses, wallet, check book, Kindle, Advil, inhaler, eye glass wipes, etc. I have no choice but to carry one now.

Usually in the bottom of mine is gum wrappers, lots of loose change because I get lazy and just toss it in vs actually pulling out my change purse to put it away, lots of receipts. I despise carrying a purse and wish I didn't have to. I used to just carry my license around in my back pocket until I lost it one time. Then I started carrying one...then kids happened and I just didn't have deep enough pockets for all the stuff you need to cart around for them. LOL

I keep my purse "just so".
I change it every day to match my outfit so nothing accumulates in there.
I have my wallet.
I have a small makeup bag with lipstick and a powder compact.
Then I have a medium size makeup bag with Kleenex, Advil, tampon, gum, mints, etc.
Every day I just grab those three things in one hand and transfer them to the next purse.

Oh, I'm a big bag girl! I have a large Coach tote that carries everything but I keep it super neat. It functions as purse and work tote. I have to have my planner, large wallet, touch up makeup and whatever book I'm reading along with misc other crap. I work three jobs so going from one to another just requires "stuff".

I used to be a big purse girl, carrying all kinds of stuff 'cause ya never know . . .
This was true w/kids (that mini deck of UNO cards did come in handy more than once!), but now that they're older I have downsized. I carry the original Thirty-one Skirt Purse and I love it. I can change the skirt w/my mood or season and never have to empty out my small bag. Right now, I have my wallet, a notebook, a small makeup bag for essentials & some pens. There is a pocket for my phone and it will fit my iPad mini.
What have I found in the bottom of my purse? Same stuff as most people - change, breathmint wrappers, used tissues, receipts . . . nothing exciting.

My purse has to be big enough for my EPI pen...that's my only requirement. What do guys with bad allergies do? You can't leave the EPI pen in the car because the heat will mess with it...and you can't leave it home. Do they carry a man-purse or a fanny-pack?

The worst thing I ever found in my purse was a week old hard boiled Easter egg. I could not figure out what smelled so bad...and then I cleaned my purse out.
I just cleaned my purse out at the beginning of the month because my daughter dumped an entire cup of salsa on it when we were out to dinner. Aside from the copious amounts of salsa, I found so many danger receipts it wasn't funny. Just removing those helped drop the bulk in my purse.

Did you get the salsa smell out? The salsa story reminded me of when I set my hand-made, Etsy purse on top of a German Chocolate frosted sheetcake. About 1 square foot slab of that sticky stuff adhered to the outside of my purse when I picked it up. Lesson: look before just flinging your purse into the back seat!

I hate purses. I have a very tiny purse. It has a slot for my drivers license and other cards /I might need. It has a compartment that fits my phone, it has a compartment that fits my keys with a zippered pouch just big enough to fold money into it in the middle between the 2 compartments. It is maybe 6 inches long by 4 inches tall by I would guess about 3 inches wide at the max. It might be a little smaller than that. I haven't measured it.
I have a small tube of advil in the bottom of the compartment I keep my keys in other than that it has nothing but phone, keys, money and cards.
I do have a small messenger bag for when I take my tablet with me that has a little more room in it. I usually use it when traveling and I can put my little purse in it.
I really do hate purses. in fact I have a stack of purses that people have given me that I just keep because it came from this person or that person. I purged them down to 6 I think and a couple special tote bags I like.

Geez, I hate autocorrect sometimes! That should be "danged receipts"! I'm shocked. I got out not only the smell but the tomato didn't stain the fabric! No clue how I got that lucky. The egg purse on the other hand...sigh...I miss that purse. (Stupid autocorrect tried to change "miss" to "kiss". Really? SMH)

I carried a small cross body purse while on vacation last week. The inside is just big enough to carry my cell phone, Kleenex and a small wallet that is just big enough to carry my license, insurance card and a couple of credit cards and some cash. My change I put in an outside pocket with my keys. Like another Pea said, it was so freeing. However I had my mints, lipstick, Advil, lens wipes and hand sanitizer in a cosmetic bag that I kept in the car.
I usually carry a wallet as big as a small purse along with everything but the kitchen sink in a large bag. I'm going to start carrying a small purse like a I did on vacation whenever I possibly can.

I found at least a week old banana in the bottom of my purse once. Really, how do you not notice a whole banana! Have recently switched to the purse within a purse set up and it works quite well much to my surprise. Can't seem to give up a purse altogether, although so tempting. The girl scout in me still feels compelled to always be prepared! Have to say not too long ago I took perverse pleasure in pulling 4 sets of screw anchors out of my big bag at just the right opportunity. My daughter was like, "Mom.....really?!!!"

Hey! Some of us still remember "Let's Make a Deal" and you needed to have a little bit of everything in your purse if you were going to go on that show!
(don't know about the new one with Wayne Brady - I'm referring to really old show).

I switch between 2 or 3 handbags/purses depending on what I'm wearing. So each one has a basic 'kit' which includes small pack of tissues, brush, emery board and lip balm. Then I switch my wallet, lipstick etc between them on a daily basis. The things that clutter it up are usually receipts that are for small amounts, sweet wrappers....not much else.
