Last year my daughter and I decided to collect books for the babies in her unit and send a package of books home with each newborn. I collected over 150 books, so we will only reach 30 babies with this batch, but we plan on continuing our efforts.
You can read about it on my blog. I am so excited about this. I feel like the boy throwing the starfish back into the ocean.
Building Lifelong Readers NICU Edition
***Update: Since I've had people ask, If you'd like to contribute books to our project, message me and I'll give you my address. If you are not comfortable sending them to me, Angie will see if they can be mailed to the hospital. We want to make sure they get to the right unit and make it to the babies.
We need new books for babies, any title is fine. Board books are great for this age group as are the touchy feely books. Suggestions: Are You My Mother, Love You Forever, The Napping House, Put Me in the Zoo, Humbug Witch, Harold and the Purple Crayon, Rhyming Dust Bunnies, Dear Zoo, Stand Tall Molly Lou Mellon, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Where the Wild Things Are, The Monster at the End of this Book, Just Me, There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly, or any book your kids loved or that you loved. Our goal is turn these little babies into lifelong readers.
We have a real need for Spanish books. My ESL students always do better when they are proficient at Spanish (if that is their home language), so I want to make sure that Spanish speaking families get a collection of Spanish books. Children need to hear books read in their home language in order to build fluency.
If you are uncomfortable sending books to a crazy internet book lady, another way you can help is to order books for your own children/grandchildren/nieces/nephews from this link: Usborne Books Catherine Crosby, and the proceeds will go to purchase books for this project. Your order is shipped directly to you. I had an Usborne party in the spring and earned over $225.00 in free books for the hospital. They have a generous hostess program, so this way your kids get books and the hospital gets books. If you have Christmas shopping for children this works out well.
Any help is welcome as literacy is so vital to the success of children and adults. Please let me know if you buy from the Usborne link or if you send books directly so that I can properly thank you. Your refupea name would be helpful as well.
