We're on the registry here in the US. It's extremely simple. Don't hesitate to register. It takes next to zero effort. Hoping you're able to find a match shescrafty.

I am sorry to read this update. Are your doctors checking overseas organisations for matches too? I don't know about the logistics of it all but I read a story lately where the donor was in Germany and the child was in the UK. Just mentioning it in case it's of any use. ((Hugs)) I have asked about that to check the korean registry as well and they are looking into it. We re trying to get her help any way we can! I'm If one of your friends can devise a recruitment flyer, I can put it up around here - Asian supermarket boards, Korean restaurants, mailboxes. I live in Northern VA in an area that has one of the largest Korean populations in the US. Our elementary school materials come home in English on one side, Korean on the other. I would be able to distribute flyers - they would have a better chance of success if they mention Phoebe's ethnicity, and, if they could be in both Korean and English, that would be even better!

My real name is Britta. I have never shared that on the board, but I so appreciated the good thoughts and prayers. Please continue to keep us in your thoughts and please get the word out about bone marrow donation!

I had a bone marrow transplant (stem cell transplant) last year. My donor was from Europe (I am Caucasian) and was one of three potential matches. She was a 12/12 match so I want to give you hope that it CAN happen. Minorities can take longer to match as there just aren't as many on the registry so I encourage everyone who can to become registered. It's a simple cheek swab and doesn't cost you anything if you are between the ages of 18-44. Older people can be registered but I believe there is a fee. While 18-44 are the best options, older and younger people can be considered. Be the Match is the American registry but it is my understanding that they work with registries from other countries.
My heart goes out to Phoebe and your family. While going through a transplant is hard they have made so many advances the survival rate is much better. Please PM if I can answer any questions.
And thank you to those who have registered and have offered to get the information out in the community. I am so grateful for the stranger halfway around the world who saved my life.

shescrafty, I'm so sorry to hear about Phoebe. If it offers you any hope, I know someone in the US who recently found a bone marrow donor from Hong Kong. So it can happen! I know that there has been increased awareness among minorities about the importance of signing up to be a donor.

I'll show some ignorance here - - in Phoebe's case would the donor need to be Korean? Or are other Asian ethnicities OK. There is huge and varied Asian community here. Send me the flyer also please.

I believe that all Asian ethnicities are grouped into one HLA sub-type. The categories listed on the Be the Match website include Caucasion, African American, Asian and American Indian/Pacific Islander. Thank you for offering to help get the word out for Phoebe and other minorities. As a recipient, I can't tell you how important it is to increase the number of registered donors. So many lives can be saved.

I would love to become a donor, but am 52. Everyone over 44 has to pay $100 to become part of the registry. I am a little frustrated by that charge, and so would never register unless it was a close family member that I had a better chance of matching.

I had heard there was a fee but I didn't know how much. I'm guessing that covers the cost of running the test. I do know of donors in their 60s but I'm not sure if they were sibling matches.

While I live in a rural area with no real Asian community I would be more than willing to help in any way possible. If there is something I can do from afar please let me know. You and your sweet daughter are always in my prayers.

Hugs. Thinking of you all often. I hope that the large international community in DC can lead you to a donor.

You and your sweet daughter are always in my prayers. That is so kind. If you contact bethematch.org they can guide you in the right direction for starting a drive. It may help not only Phoebe but everyone else awaiting transplant.

Praying for your family.
Haven't read all 24 pages so this may be repeat info, but I registered with Be The Match a few years ago...super easy!!! They have a website and you can order a kit online - just a cheek swab and returned by mail.

Today is Thanksgiving Sunday in Canada. I am thankful that there is a registry where people can sign up to help others in need.
I am sending you big cyber hugs ( ( ( ( hugs ) ) ) ). I can kind of understand where you are at. It was very fortunate that when my dd died, they were able to harvest a few of her organs, (mainly skin for transplant) to offer life to others who were in such desperate need.

I'm so sorry to read such grim news. Is there a pea in the San Francisco Bay area in California who can arrange a drive? The Asian population there is so much higher than much of the country.

Where in Maryland are you? Is it possible to contact some colleges to ask for a bone marrow drive there? I know my DDs sorority at Towson University just supported a drive, maybe another college sorority would do the same? I live in Southern MD, and we don't have a large Asian population here at all, or I'd volunteer to post flyers for you. Your sweet Phoebe and your family remain in my prayers!
