No spoilers, please I know I am super late to this party, but I just started watching the first season of Breaking Bad. Question: when is the action in the first season supposed to take place? The houses (especially Walt's house) look early 1990s to me as does a lot of the wardrobe and most of the cars, but then in one episode a man is talking on Bluetooth. I'm confused! Is the outdatedness supposed to reflect the fact that they're poor? Or maybe not very classy? In the episode where Skyler is painting the nursery it screams early 90s and she's just then doing that room. So it's not just that they can't afford to update it, she's still choosing that style. The disconnect is bothering me so much that I'm having a hard time caring about the rest of the story.

I feel like it was taking place in current time. They are having money problems so things would be outdated. Maybe her choosing an older style is just a reflection that she's sort of frumpy? To be honest I really didn't notice. Stick with the series though. Great acting and character development- and story telling.

I agree, it took place in the time it was filmed. I think the style is just reflective of their income, taste and maybe even their location. It,is,such,a great show, you are going to be hooked!

Thanks peas.
I finished season 1. I can see why everyone raves about the acting. I'm trying to stick with it, but this aspect is still bothering me SO, so much.

I think the general frumpiness is to reflect the mediocrity of their life. The car that is out of style and several years old, the middle of the road job, the not quite hot decor, they all come together to illustrate a contrast between his life and the lives of his older colleagues later on in the show which sets up quite a bit of the motivation for him to take things as far as he does.

The story begins sometime in 2008 and the time elapsed over the five seasons is 2 years.

Perfectly described. This is the Cliff Notes version of the "theme" for BB. It really is a great show! I had to take a break from the show when I was knee deep in school and missed a season or two. I watched the final season but I fully intend to go back and re-watch it all very soon. m

I agree with this. I watched the show a while back on the recommendation of my kids--loved it!

Thanks for holding the No Spoilers line. I'm about to start the series, and without seeing it know this is something I'd pick up on, and question too. Even The Goldbergs bugs me when they have trends out of time.

They never seem to get out of their frumpiness either, yep the sister's house is a direct opposite of theirs. I loved the sister's fascination with the color purple in her clothes, her décor it must have drove Hank silently crazy haha!
I was late to BB too and finished it several months ago. I started it just as BB was ending and managed not to see or hear one spoiler yay.

The colours used are significant and reflect the mood and situation of the characters at a particular point in the series. Probably best not to Google this, as you may get spoilers, but if you pay attention to the colours of the clothing as you watch, you will see the importance of them. It is a fantastic series.

What always amazed me about BB was that Bryan Cranston (who plays the main character of Walter White) played the dad in Malcolm in the Middle. His character was an idiot on that show (which wasn't exactly high entertainment, IMHO.) As a matter of fact, he received a letter from Anthony Hopkins telling him that his character on BB was the best acting he'd ever seen.

I'm SO unobservant. I didn't pick up on any of the decor or color stuff. Love the show, though!

Six months later, I'm still complaining about the daytime cleavage, incorrect hem lengths, and no-hose looks in the movie "American Hustle." (I do some theatrical costuming, and these mistakes drive me crazy.)
Movies and TV shows often get this stuff wrong. Sometimes it's because of the age-or-ignorance of the costume and set designers; sometimes it's pandering to incorrect audience expectations (e.g. poodle skirts throughout the 1950s or denim overalls on Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn); sometimes they know they're wrong, but they're going for a mood.
In the case of Breaking Bad, I suspect the stagnation of the White household's dress and design is meant to reflect Walter's stagnation.

I just finished season 1, I think I'm two episodes into season 2. Just saw her sister's house and yeah, complete opposite. I did not notice the color purple, so will be checking that out from now on.

the colors chosen for Breaking Bad are important you can google it but doing so...you run the risk of spoiling the show
once you finish....it'll all make sense when you look it up

Her oldest would have been born in the early 90's. That's where I associate all the baby stuff from. She held on to it. I noticed the purple right away, then it was funny to see where it would pop up. Her dh was such a MANS MAN that it was funny to see the whole house in purple.
