I have recently become re-enamored with my leather planner. It is a custom one that my husband bought for me after I finished grad school (a post early retirement career change). I made a video about it - my first - and entered the video in a contest for "likes" (So I would greatly appreciate your "Likes"!!)
Anyway, it occurs to me that there are a LOT (really, a lot) of videos out there of people showing how they have set up their planners and generally made them look beautiful. I did a little bit with mine, but wow, I have seem some real effort and creativity put into keep track of things! A few years ago I would have thought that these leather planners (Filofax, Franklin Covey, Day Runner, etc...) were going the way of the buggy whip. But I seem to see a renewed interest in planners. Am I seeing things? Or do you all think there is continuing interest in all things planner, leather and paper related?

You are not seeing things. They are definitely making a comeback but this time with lots of decorating. I have an Arc notebook that I got at Staples and make my own planner pages. Mine are not as decorated as some I've seen but I like to keep it functional as well.

It was the old board that introduced me to the planner world. There is definitely a subset of people out there who are still very interested in planners. There are lots of Facebook groups out there for devotees (if you didn't already know).

I follow a few of the Erin Condren groups on FB. People have done amazing things with them! I love to watch all the creativity. But I know I'd get bogged down in the prettiness of them and my life needs function over form right now. I recently discovered bullet journaling and have another thread going on it. I'm hoping it ends up being something I can stick with long term. Good luck planning! Bullet journaling thread: 2peasrefugees.boards.net/thread/30134/heard-bullet-journaling

I still use a paper planner. I also use Google Calendar. I use the Arc calendar available through Staples. I like the flexibility of it.

Not everyone is decorating their planners, but paper planners have definitely made a comeback. And scrapbook companies are trying to get into that market. Webster's Pages will release another Color Crush size soon, and My Mind's Eye will release theirs soon (together with Franklin Covey). Not to mention the Midori and Hobonichi craze.

Midori-style planners are really popular now. So many 'faux-dori' makers on Etsy, for example.
They are really versatile - basically a folded cover with elastic cords; you slide any notebook you want under the elastics, and you can have several notebooks in each cover. The original Midori comes in a few sizes, but the faux-Doris have lots of sizes.
So you can have your planner, a bullet journal, a notebook for notes, one for sketches, one with all your reference info .... There is no limit.
Hobonichi is another hugely popular style of planner.

Yes. I use a Travelers Notebook (no rings). I love paper planning and will likely always have one.

Thanks for all your replies (and yes, this is my first post to the board)! I am thinking of starting a small online business selling some of the planners I love (Filofax, Van der Spek, etc...) and there is limited market research out there - it's mostly about the worldwide stationery market and planners are such a subset. Interesting that two of you mentioned the Arc notebook at staples....is it because it's easily accessible locally or that you like the ability to take pages in and out so easily? Just curious. I have two Arc notebooks that I've used for journals, work, etc... but not a planner. Thanks!

Welcome to the board! I've always used a paper planner. I seem to change brands every year --although I like the one I have now (I'm not sure what is was....KB something.) I do a very low level of decorating. Mostly stickers or washi to bring my attention to something I'm afraid I'll forget. I like my planner with the whole week on one page, and a page for notes on the facing page. It's a little bit like bullet journaling from there -- I group my lists and code them and bring them forward.

Love your vdS! (I have four, in different sizes). Lucky you!!! I've been using paper planners for years. I have 2 travelers notebooks by Chic Sparrow. One is for work related stuff and the other is family/home/personal and I have a Filofax Malden that I keep in my purse and doubles as a wallet. Thanks for all your replies (and yes, this is my first post to the board)! I have two Arc notebooks that I've used for journals, work, etc... but not a planner. Thanks! A question about selling vdS in an online store. I'm just curious why someone would go through a 3rd party instead of buying directly from vdSpek? They are so expensive to begin with, I wouldn't want to pay any more than vdSpek charges. Also, I could be mistaken but I didn't think that they have any small online distributors for their products.

My Plum paper planner arrives today! Love it and this is my second one. I'm sure I heard about them from the peas. I love that they are customizable. I use the family planner, but they offer student, teacher and single ones too.

I think I am the one who mentioned ARC from Staples. I love the concept and did pick up the calendar insert. It didn't work for me. The notebook is too big and the rough and tumble of my purse makes pages pop out. I still love the notebook, but I am onto bullet journaling. I want to be a decorator of planners, but probably don't have it in me. I do have an old leather Filofax that I use as an address book.

I'm a paper planner girl as well. I am on year 7 with Erin Condren and I love them. Before that it was Franklin Covey. I got started because my first office job bought everyone a planner to keep track of their work appointments. It was such a great perk and it's stayed with me all these years later.
However, now I use Outlook for all things work and my paper planner & Google calendars/iphone sync for personal items.

Their customer service, which is unparallelled, is very much based on direct contact with each customer. I very much doubt they would be willing to sell their planners through another company. And like Ingrid says: why would anyone want to buy them from someone else? They are expensive to begin with, so why buy at a higher cost without the possibility of customization?

miominmio So I'm guessing you must love your van der Spek planners! Do you have a favorite? I was wondering if it's possible to go to their factory - I'd love to do that on my next trip to The Netherlands

I was wondering if it's possible to go to their factory - I'd love to do that on my next trip to The Netherlands I don't think it's possible to visit (there was a chance to do so earlier this year, but that's the exception). But it would have been fun! But, you could email Petra and ask. and my favourite? Possibly my standard 30 mm brown Janet leather/special nappa azalea with back pocket and secretarial pockets. Loooove that one!

I've been using the Arc system from Staples for several years now, but just recently started to decorate it. Found all kinds of freebies online to use and my scrapbook stash provided a bunch of things to use too.
