Which do you align with the most aka if you absolutely had to vote and your choice was only republican or democrat, where would you land? (Yes I know there are many independents or some that fall here on an issue, there on an issue, but I am asking you to make a very limited choice )
Just curious based on the speaker thread where the board actually lies

I really wish more people would opt not to align themselves with one or the other. I think the major parties need a shake-up to stop acting like fighting children and start working together for the common goal of a better run country, and I really think that if more people started opting to back candidates outside of the 2 major parties it would do a good job of sending the message that the citizens of the US are tired of the crap both sides are always pulling. (That being said, I did vote in your poll. )

I am ashamed of the party to which I have belonged ever since I registered to vote at the age of 18, a long long time ago. I thought by staying in, I could vote for more moderate candidates. They crossed the border into crazy town a while back, and I am going to re-register for the next election cycle, much to the delight of my bleeding-heart liberal husband.

I think both parties are shady and only look out for their own interests. However, in the limited choices of the poll I'll choose Democrat.

This is like those "would you rather" questions.
Like, would you rather be the famous author of Twilight or the famous writer of every Nickelback song?
Or, would you rather peel all your nails out of your fingers or pull all the teeth out of your mouth?
There's no good answer 'cause you lose either way.
I plead the 5th.

I am a registered Democrat and can count on one hand the number of times I've voted for a candidate of any other party.
I get more and more lefty as I get older.

I am a life long (well, voter life) registered republican but I will often split the ticket when it comes to voting. But the last few elections I've voted for more democrats than republicans. This cycle I am considering changing my party affiliation for the first time in my voting life.
eta: I put republican in the poll since that is what I am registered as. I don't identify as a democrat and disagree with some policies but the republican party is making it impossible to remain an unchurched moderate.

I am a registered Democrat, but upon occasion will vote for someone who isn't my party because they more align with what I believe.
This doesn't happen very often anymore. Used to be you could find more socially liberal/fiscally conservative candidates-but these days it is like a one or the other Grand Canyon sized divide that only allows for one or the other.

Republican, but I've voted for some Democratic. It depends on what and whom they are.

I'm a registered independent. I changed my registration six years ago because I could not stomach the rhetoric any longer. Sadly, that means I get more flyers and phone calls. I have misgivings about both parties.

Ideally, I want my government leaders to play to the middle in order to represent the largest constituency. I don't see that happening at all.

I'm the child of two moderate Republicans who was raised to be a Republican. I didn't leave the party, the party left me years ago. Since then, I registered Democrat and have never looked back. They have a nice big tent, so I'm comfortable and at home.

sorry - I don't vote based on political affliation. I'm registered as a non-affiliated voter (and always have been) and when I vote, it's always for a mix of Democratic, Republican and third party candidates based on the individual candidates. I've never managed to vote for a winning Presidential candidate yet (and I first voted in 1988)...I've voted for Democratic, Republican and even a third party candidate (Ross Perot - remember him?) for President but I'm never aligned with the majority I describe myself as a moderate free-thinker

I'm a registered Republican, but like anxiousmom, I'm looking for candidates that re socially liberal and fiscally conservative. In recent years, finding one has been next to impossible especially in Florida, which has drunk the Tea Party kool-aid and declared war on anyone in public service.

Education is my hot button issue, which will surprise exactly no one on this board. I would vote for almost anyone who promised to put education decisions back in the hands of teachers and parents instead of spending billions of tax dollars on the corporatization of our public education system. I say almost because I would have to draw the line at a lunatic from the fringe of either side.
I consider myself a Democrat in Texas, but I think Texas Democrats as a whole are a lot more moderate than the national party.

Democrat. In 2008 I strongly considered McCain, until he chose a half-wit for a running mate whom no one in the party could be bothered to vet.

I voted on this poll, even though I'm not able to vote in the US! Democrat in case you're interested.
I actually feel more aligned to the Democrats than I do to the equivalent party in Australia (ALP / Labour Party). I have, on 2 occasions, voted for the Coalition (equivalent to Republicans), but I know that I would never doubt that I would ever vote Republican if I lived in the US.
Edited to change "know that I would never" to "doubt that I would ever" because, well, the Dems could put up someone who is as big a tool as Trump one day.

I've always registered as Democrat since the very beginning, because in Florida, you can't vote in primaries unless you pick a party (ie, not Independent. That was what DH had for years, but he changed it to Libertarian in 2012.) I would say in the past, I'd split down the line depending on issues, particularly in local races. But more and more, it seems, if don't tote the exact Tea Party line, they don't want anything to do with you. And I *know* there are moderate Republicans out there (just right here on this thread), but they are just getting pushed out.
I tend to agree...the two party system is broken. You are either extreme one was or the other, or there's no room for you. We truly need a viable third (or fourth or fifth) party.
