I am planning my son's birthday party and trying to figure out what to serve. Unfortunately, not many people have RSVP'd so I really don't know how many to expect. We invited several of our friends and their kids. So far, there are the 6 of us and 8 others that have said they will be here. I was thinking of having a taco bar or walking tacos. Wondering if I would regret this due to the mess? If I did this, what else would you serve? I have a cute idea (from Pinterest) for a fruit platter and could also do a veggie tray. What else would you serve? Any other ideas for a main dish? It is a pirate party, if that matters. In the past I have done pulled pork, homemade sloppy joes, etc with chips and other snacky foods.

What's the age of the kids?

Taco bar sounds fun. I'd avoid the walking tacos unless the kids are older. Rice, nachos, fajitas, refried beans would go well with it too.

This all depends on the age of the kids. If the kids are old enough to take food on their own plates and carry it to the table without problems, then a taco bar is great food. I still haven't met a kid who doesn't like taco's. And because there are so many toppings to choose from, it is easy to avoid things you are allergic to, have an intolerance for or don't eat for religious reasons, or other reasons. Meat, dairy, gluten etc can easily be avoided and taco's is brilliant if you need to please everyone. I have had taco bars several times, and it has always been a success. Yes, it might be a bit messy, but it is such crowdpleaser that I don't really mind.

Teenagers, yes. Under 12- way too messy.

Totally depends on the ages of the kids. Based on it being a pirate party, I'm thinking the kids are too young.

Indoors or out?
I would be happy to do tacos outdoors... but young kids need to sit and eat IMO, they will still make a mess with Tacos but less hassle to clean up outside.
Either way I would have a paper table cloth and that can be scooped up and thrown away...

I don't think tacos would be much messier than sloppy joes.
Instead of tacos, why not a taco salad bar? Then you could use plastic bowls/forks and it wouldn't be as messy. Everyone could still choose their favorite toppings and enjoy the taste of tacos.

I think either one would be fine. I assume by walking tacos you mean in the bag of Doritos. The kids could still sit and eat them.
I'd keep it simple with a fruit platter. Kids like that more than veggies, in most cases.

First, walking tacos doesn't mean you HAVE to walk around to eat them. I don't see why they or a taco bar are inherently more messy than sloppy joes. Have an adult available to serve what the kids want and a place for them to sit down to eat.

For me it would depend on the kids' age and where they would be eating. But the idea in general sounds fun and like something kids would like.

I think your menu sounds great.
Having a taco truck (or driveway setup like that) here is very popular. The vendor comes with stove and all the goodies and whips you up tacos in the driveway. As a matter of fact, every kids party and a few adult ones I've been to in the past six months have had one.

I usually went the hot dogs & chips or ordered pizza. Plastic table cloth, juice boxes, paper plates. throw the whole thing out at the end.

We did that a lot for DS's Birthday parties. I didn't think they were any messier than any other foods. We always did fruit tray, veggie tray, make you own tacos, cake and ice cream.

I like to do a taco bar because the kids can pick their own topping or what they want to eat. Taco bar is great for us because I put out flour tortillas and taco shells. I also put out beans, rice and plenty of cheese and lettuce. That way the kids can make burritos, soft tacos, hard tacos or taco salads. I have never had anyone not be able to eat, even the vegetarians that we've served.
We also do baked potato bars. I do a few group meals each year for our 4-H kids. We did a baked potato bar this year at fair and they loved it. We are doing taco bar next year.

Tacos if everyone sits outside at a table to eat would be a good idea. Otherwise, you'd be looking at a huge mess w/excited children who are running around. If the kids are teens then tacos inside would work.

Thanks for the ideas. The kids range in age from 3-12. I probably shouldn't have said walking tacos. I was thinking the taco in a bag, but I might just have chips as an option along with tortillas (as opposed to individual bags) and then have bowls available if they want them. In regards to mess, I was just envisioning shredded lettuce and cheese throughout the house.
