Can you access the vents from down in the basement? If so, you might be able to open one up and look up in there to see if you see her. Do you have any recliners? She could be up inside one of those. I hope that you find her soon. It couldn't hurt to put some food outside and keep checking. Cats can slip out sometimes without being seen. Please keep us updated.

I grew up in the country and have been a pet owner to lots of cats over my lifetime. Dobby ranks in the top 3 favorite cats I've ever had; there is just something really special about her. She has charmed our vet and the vet tech as well. She has changed the dynamic and personalities of our other cats as well, making them more social and playful. She's been a wonderful addition to our menagerie. Well DUH there's something really special about Dobby. She has a very special story and it's easy to see why she holds such a high ranking on your list.

My one cat was a dumpster cat who wound up in a cage until I brought her home. She was so freaked out that she climbed up as high as she could in the basement on the unfinished side and proceeded to walk across the ceiling tile on the more finished side, but she didn't stop there. She went down the outside wall that had plastic lining and insulation behind panelling. We all sat very very quiet and listened for her. Eventually my dh had to pull off some of the panelling so we could get her out. She never did that again, thank goodness. Cats do find the oddest places to hide. She still likes to be in, what she considers, hidden spots. Good luck. I'll be waiting to read an update with a happy ending.

We can't. But dh did go to every single floor vent, pull it up, called for her and (maybe tmi?) stuck his nose down in to see if he could smell anything. We don't have any recliners. We lifted up every couch and stuffed chair to see if she got inside. We don't have a lot of clutter or good hiding spaces like boxes or floor decor - the only real options left are either behind books in the reading room or maybe inside one of my scrapbooks. We talked about setting the trap and putting food out tonight but a) we really don't think she got out and b ) if we caught another one of the neighborhood feral cats (aka Dobby's dad,) I might lose what is left of my sanity.

Oh my, I do enjoy that little Dobby! I know how panicky and worrisome it is when a cat has been missing for a few days. It's happened to us several times. They always turn up. Once, we found our cat Minerva up on a very high shelf in the back of a closet. Another time Guzzy appeared out of the basement after we'd looked all over for him down there. Cats are strange. I hope Trixie comes out and returns to her normal hiding again, soon.

Can you leave the floor vent open in one room and shut the other cats up in another room so they can't get to it? Then if she is in the vent she might come out on her own.

Could she be in there?

It's a sealed gas fireplace so no, she's not in there.

One of my formerly feral cats hid under a dresser once for over two hours. His brother used to hide on the bookshelves, and under my bed, where he'd dug up a hole inside the matress. When they were kittens sometimes they go missing for days to reappear when we were convinced they'd gotten out. I ended up putting break away collars on them, with tiny bells inside, to be able to find them. I hope your kitty comes out of hiding soon.

I just thought of something!
Ds lost a video game. I scoured the house for it. It was eventually found under a dresser up under the drawer. I have no idea how. Take a hand mirror under any and all furniture that is raised off the ground. Unless the bottom is sealed with a solid piece of wood she could be up there .

This is funny because in the process of looking for her, we lifted up the couches in the basement (which is the kids' playroom) and inside one of the couches I heard a clink and a clank and looked inside the torn bottom and found a remote control and a long lost Nintendo DS game.

How big is she? Do you have one of the newer kind of toilets that has open holes in the back of the base unit? We had kittens wedge themselves in there once. I never would have thought to look back there for the kittens. But they were closed in the bathroom and there was literally nowhere else for them to go.
After the Alabama tornadoes of 2011, my sister found a mama cat and 4 kittens living under her crawl space. She trapped them, and they all lived in her 2-room bathroom for several months. Mama cat was very scared and feral and transferred all that fear to the kittens. Finally they calmed down enough that I took one boy kitten home, our parents took another brother and the sister, and my sister kept mama and the last brother. (We all added them to existing menageries.)
Anyway, after my mom got the kittens to her house, the kittens got in the back of the toilet. Mom thought that was too germy of a place for them to be. The boy came out, but dad is big and couldn't easily get down to get the girl out. The first time I tried to get her, she bit my finger and clamped her mouth down on it tight. Quite a few deep puncture wounds courtesy of sharp kitten teeth. Luckily I managed to get enough blood out that my finger didn't get infected, and I had an up-to-date tetanus shot. I did finally manage to get the kitten out after putting on a glove.

She was probably stressed out that you were gone, and is now stressed at all the activity of you looking for her.
Once everybody goes to bed and the house is quiet and dark, she'll probably come out to eat and use the litter box. I would be tempted to find a hidden spot where I could sit very quietly and watch the food bowl, with the lights turned way down in that room.

Aww, I hope she turns up soon. Our guys are usually easy to find...crammed back up under a nightstand or in the boxsprings.

I hope she turns up safe and well.
I have a cat that used to get into my ducted heating vents under the house. She would drop down the vent from inside the house and then run along the tubes, often popping up at another vent. Eventually she tore a hole in the ducting so she could get out under the house. Do you have access under your house where you could check?

She'll be back. I have one who disappears for weeks on end but always manages to make it back. I also had one who hid in the house for 6 weeks and I couldn't find her. I knew she somewhere in the house because I'd leave food out and it would be gone in the morning, but I never did figure out where she was hiding. I waited for her to show up one night, grabbed her and kept her in the laundry room until she calmed down...but she'd still go AWOL from time to time.

I have a cat that can hold a grudge like no human being I have ever seen. If I am gone for more than a couple of hours, he pouts and won't let me get near him. Go away for the weekend? I won't see him for 12 hours or more. We have no clue where he hides, and I live in a house that is approximately 1200 square feet so there really aren't a whole lot of places he can go. Not to mention that he is HUGE, like the size of a giant raccoon. I was gone for the weekend. He came out sometime last night to eat, but I still haven't seen him this morning. I have looked, but I think he has an invisibility cloak. I do find that opening a can of wet food and walking around the house with it helps bring him out of hiding though. That stuff stinks, he loves it and one whiff of it sets his whiskers twitching.

I have ransacked the house. I tore apart the beds, took all the drawers out of the dressers and opened every single suitcase. I checked inside all the boots, the hats & mittens bin and every bookcase. I pulled out all of the clothes in the closets in case she was hiding on top or in between something hanging. DS searched every nook and cranny of the furnace room and garage. I'm at my wits end but am starting to believe that somehow, she did get out. If she died in one of the vents, surely we would smell something by now. We're going to set the trap outside tonight.
