I've been a member of Sam's Club for many years, it's only about 15 minutes away. Costco is about a half hour away but Clark Howard (and the Peas ) say a lot of good things about Costco. I haven't been in one in over ten years. Is it that much better than Sams? (I know they treat their employees much better-they were one of my accounts several years ago so I was privy to wages, etc) . Do you think it's worth it to drive another 15 minutes? Thanks!!

I would drive the extra 15 minutes to Costco. If for no other reason the meat is better at Costco.

We have both a few minutes away from each other. I prefer costco. I like there clothes, and other misc/seasonal items better for some reason. I also like their bakery and photo department better.
But mainly there isn't too much difference for me. I wouldn't go out of my way for costco if a sam's was more convenient.

I belong to both. I find that SAMs is more consistent in what they carry. Costco is more hit and miss. That said, if I had to choose I'd pick Costco over sams

I have memberships to both, I'm in a domestic partnership with a co-worker for the costco one, so the price evens out. I told DH I was leaving him for cheap milk and a chicken bake, lol.
Honestly, for staples I don't think there is much difference, their meat prices are competitive, produce is good and their baked goods can vary by store. This time of year their toy selection is incredible and much larger than Sams. Their clothes selection is larger. Books and videos it's a toss up. I've price compared coke, apple juice, chocolate syrup and milk and Sams is cheaper here than Costco. The Mo ones also have liquor which tends to be cheaper than Sams.

Our Costco parking lot is reason enough to go to Sam's.

Our Costco parking lot is reason enough to go to Sam's. Ha, sounds like mine. I've had memberships at both and get grief for choosing non-PC Sams. It's rude to expect the Sam's retail workers to be on the job so early (according to my friends). But dang it- I like that I can use my business membership and shop before I have to be at my job.

It is really going to depend on you and your store. Right now I have a membership to both. In my old town my friend and I each had a membership and took each other.
In my old Costco it was a nightmare with people. Hated shopping there. In this Costco both Sam's and Costco run about the same in people and it is much better.
Sam's opens earlier which I love.
For what I buy the stores have pretty much the same thing. Since Sam's is much closer I will keep the membership when it is up and discontinue Costco.
I would suggest a visit with a friend and then decide.

I scoped out costco. There wasn't enough there that interested me to pick it over Sam's, especially since my Sam's is closer. (Of course, I'm not feeding a family, so what interests me may be different than what you're looking for.)
Also, the last time I tried to go to Costco to re-evaluate, and I tried to sign in (because I don't have a membership), there was no semblance of a line and people just milling around the customer service desk and nothing happening. I couldn't even get their binder from someone to sign it. Which is probably just as well since they ask for your driver's license number if you're a guest, which they absolutely do.not.need.

I had both for a while- dh had Sam's through work and I was on that, and my mom bought us a Costco membership. Since dh left that job, we only have Costco (we pay for it now, so it isn't just because it was free!). The only thing I miss about Sam's is being able to go early in the morning. Ok, also the fact that Costco stopped carrying Northern tp and Sam's still has it. My mom has both memberships, so she keeps us in tp.

We visited Costco a few weeks ago because I heard they carried a set of books that may have been worth getting a membership for, but they didn't have them. It had been years since I've been in one since we always use Sams.
The biggest difference I noticed would be for business supplies. Costco didn't seem to have very much that we needed. We'll stay with Sams since it's only 1 hour away and Costco is 1 hour 15 minutes away.

I used to belong to Sam's before the Costco here opened. Costco is MUCH cleaner, the employees always go out of their way to be helpful and friendly and we like the selection of stuff they sell. I love their concierge service and the added extended warranty on all the electronics stuff. I love their return policy. I love that with the executive membership I end up getting my membership for free due to the 2% rebate on everything we buy. I love that their gas is always the cheapest in town. I would absolutely go out of my way to go to Costco.

I don't like WalMart all that much, so that's part of it for me...
but I would say, if you can find anything specific you like at Costco that makes it worth your while to go the extra 15 minutes, then go for it. (I know that's vague, lol!)
There are a few things Costco carries that we really like, the main one being the Kirkland brand dog food. That's what our dogs were raised on, and the savings on that alone makes the membership worth it for us.

We just had a brand new Sam's open about 7 minutes from my house. I also love the chilis and pre made meals in the deli. I get my photos done at Sam's and the convenience of that is nice too. We have a business membership and I have loved going in early. I think a bunch of businesses are open early, so I am not sure why someone would be ticked about being to work early. My son is at work by 6:15 every morning. Then again he is done by 2:30 and loves that.

We dropped out Costco membership--couldn't justify the $99 fee and only go 4x a year! Not a whole lot that appealed to us.

I just moved from being minutes away from a Sam's and far from a Costco, to minutes away from a Costco and far from a Sam's. Having shopped at the Costco several times now I can honestly say I miss Sam's. They had more of the bulk items my family likes there and at better prices, that may be a regional thing though. The Sam's was bigger and brighter, and the parking was a thousand times better. But since I don't have much of a choice now, I'm learning to like Costco. I do like their paper products - paper towels and toilet paper - quite a bit. But I have yet to find anything else we use that is superior to what we were buying at Sam's.

We belong to both. The Sam's is 5 minutes from us, and we use their pharmacy because it's awesome. It was just really convenient to pick up groceries and other items when we were there anyway.
We've been members for 4 years, and we know most of the employees by name. Except the DirectTV salesguy who ambushes us every time we're there, sometimes twice in the same visit. People avoid wherever he is. It's funny to see everyone ducking him, but he's oblivious. We're even DirectTV subscribers.
I've talked to the pharmacist and asked about how she likes working for Sam's/Walmart. She really likes it, and there isn't much turnover.
I would prefer to go to COSTCO over Sam's, but ours is 45 minutes away and the traffic around the store is horrendous.
We don't go to Costco much although we love their products and customer service. We get our car and renter's insurance through Costco and the savings are so great that it's worth the membership fee.
Costco also had a policy that for their executive membership if you spent a certain amount at their store per year, you got a check refunding the membership price. I don't know if they still do that. When we lived in Chicago and had a Costco right by us, we got the check every year.
Costco's meat is wonderful. Their beef is Choice and restaurant quality. Their stew meat is the cuttings from the in store butcher's shop. I've bought some that was all tenderloin.

I have a friend that takes me to Sam's occasionally and I take her to Costco. Honestly, I would choose whichever was the most conveniently located.

I would absolutely go out of my way to go to Costco. I think this depends on your town. Our Costco and Sams stores and personnel are equal in quality, cleanliness. The Sams parking lot has a better layout though and no gas at our Costco. But two of our Walmarts look better than the average Kohls in other burbs - we might not be the norm. Then again, Walmart near the highway might be in Justified.

They each carry different things so we belong to both. I love that Sams sometimes has smaller containers of things. Costco almost always only has large bulky packaging. I love that I can shop at 7 am st sams. Love, love, love that. I keep Costco though because they carry organic milk and s few other organic staples that Sams doesn't. Costco is also closer to us. Costco is almost always crazy busy but this can vary a lot based on location.
I would go and visit and see if it's worth it or not. Some items are the same or similar and some aren't.

I buy a lot of my clothes at Costco, both work and casual. I always get compliments at work and then I get to tell people it was less than $20 at Costco. My husband swears by their Kirkland dress shirts.

It's hard to pick. We have memberships to both. I love the bagged chopped romaine lettuce at Sam's. So much more affordable. I'd probably stick with the closer one if I were you.

As an Empath, I enjoy feeling the energy of Costco much more than I do with Sam's. And does Sam's have a good selection of organic food? I've been very impressed with how Costco is growing with their selection of my grub vibe
