I have been put in charge of bringing a "themed basket" for auction at an event. I've never made one in my life. What have you done or seen that was a hot item? It's a church event so no alcohol type of things. I need help!

Movie theme is always fun. DVDs. Popcorn and candy. Also some actual movie tickets.

Clearly not a Catholic church if it's a no alcohol kind of thing! Popular baskets are: Movie night- DVDs, microwave popcorn, theatre box candy, a cheap throw blanket in a popcorn bowl Game night- decks of cards, poker chips, board games Bath and Body stuff- these aren't great, but I do see them. If you focus more on the pampering aspect and less on a particular scent, you might do better. Sports themes- pro team throw blanket, t-shirt, can koozies, etc. Grilling- grill seasonings, apron, cedar planks or wood chips, smoker box
If you make your "basket" something theme related (like the popcorn bowl as the "basket" for movie night) you will do better. No one wants an actual basket. Lol

Movie night: popcorn, movie candy boxes, a big blanket, some DVDS, movie theatre card.
Baking: a nice cookie sheet or muffin tin, cookbook, specialty sprinkles, gift card for a baking store (like a U-Bake or something), apron.
Cooking: assorted flavored oils/vinegars, cookbooks, unusual utensils (like a citrus zester or something), high quality utensils, apron.
Sweet treats: specialty cookies, candy, cocoa, mugs.
Savory treats: jerky, nuts, trail mixes.
Crafty: card bases, 6x6 paper pad, travel trimmer, adhesive, sentiment stamp set, black or brown ink pad, clear block if needed.

How about a Christmas wrapping basket. Wrapping paper, ribbons, tags, scotch tape, tissue paper, scissors, etc.
Or just a generic wrapping basket with the same stuff in birthday, wedding and plain wrapping designs.
Or assorted cards, writing paper, pens, envelopes and stamps.

My son's football team a raffle drawing last week and there were some fun baskets. The most creative was an actual fire pit (the portable kind) filled with boxes of graham crackers, hershey bars, marshmallows and the stick thingies to roast the marshmallows on.
There was also one that had a Dick's gift card, stadium blanket, tumblers, a sports book of some kind and 2 nice stadium seats. There was also a movie basket and a basket with a bunch of random gift cards in varying amounts.
Show us pics of your basket when you're done.

Christmas cookie baking basket with cookie cutters, a recipe book, assorted sprinkles/colored sugars, Silpat cookie sheet liners, silicone rolling pin and a pack of decorative little boxes (flat) to put baked cookies in. Put it all on a cookie sheet and put the smaller stuff inside an empty cookie tin.

Our school does theme basket auctions at Winterfest every year. There's always
Cat Lovers-toys and treats for cats, cat mug, notepad, etc Dog lovers-same as above coffee/tea American Girl Doll weekend getaway-overnight accommodations included tickets to big sporting event along with t-shirts, pompoms, etc (organization) pride-this is hugely popular with in our case a school t-shirt, etc but the main attraction is the ability to name the drive in front of the school for the year, spend a day with the superintendent/principal, whatever. In other fundraisers we've done we've given the right to court side seats at a basketball game, a special parking spot for a month/year/season of whatever sport or something you can't normally do everyday. I could see doing front row seats at church-at our church that would get quite a funny reaction because NOBODY will sit in the front. It has been a huge fundraiser and one of the highest selling baskets.

I saw an awfully cute one that had an ice cream maker (the kind where you freeze the bowl) and ice cream mix from Williams and Sonoma, two ice cream dishes, an ice cream scoop and small topping bottles.
I think though that the answer to this question really depends on how much you want to spend...

I am going to make a STEM/STEAM basket for our schools annual auction in Feb. I'm excited about it, and I think it will do well. Not sure how something like that will fare at a church auction though.

I just did an ice cream social one. I put a gc to the local ice cream stand, sprinkles and sauces, a cute ice cream scoop and bowls from TJ Maxx. It went quickly.

If there are other raffle baskets there, I think it is nice to do something that appeals to men as well and sports can be a specific taste. We always do a nice "car wash" basket or a "car necessity" basket and we always get a very high bid for it.
Car Wash: We get a nice 5 gallon bucket and that is the "basket", good quality car wash liquid, paste wax, armorall, glass cleaner, paper towels, car air freshener, sponges to wash the car, the scrub brush for tires, chamois, a long handled car wash sponge for those with trucks/van/SUV, a GC or two for a local car wash place, etc.
For car basket: we include many items listed in the car wash basket plus a set of jumper cables, flares, basic tool kit to keep in the trunk, car blanket, etc.

I had my husband help me with one that went over really well. He is an avid fisherman and we put together a basket with all the basic tackle needed to catch crappies & bluegills. We included a small tackle box and a couple different coatings for frying fish. It cost around $25 to put together. We were trying to do something that would appeal to guys.

I just did a Tervis tumbler with small $ gift cards to like Panera, Starbucks, cold stone, and lottery tickets sticking out like a flower arrangement. If I knew how to post pictures I would... But it went over VERY WELL!

I did a couple smallish for a silent auction recently.
I got a $25 gasoline card and paired it with a model car.
I got a $25 gift card to a local nursery and paired it with nice garden gloves I picked up on sale after the season.

The garden basket included 4 tickets to a local botanic garden (donated), a box of floral note cards, gardening gloves, trowel and a terracotta pot with mixed succulents (cuttings from my garden). The TJ's basket was a reusable shopping bag filled with snack foods (TJ will donate to schools, not sure if they donate to other groups and you need to make the request well in advance). Beach totes filled with a beach towel, flip flops, water bottle and sunscreen always do well here.

Hot chocolate = 2 mugs, 2 stirring utensils (e.g. spoons, chocolate covered spoons, chocolate sticks), various flavored mixes, marshmallows, whip cream, sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, cookies (e.g. Oreo, shortbread), & if close to holidays, candy canes & gingerbread cookies.

The most popular baskets in my area are baskets with rub off lottery tickets or gift cards.
