I got my 6 miles in today. Nike app told me we(dog & I) averaged 14.16 a mile. Probably our fastest time ever together. He goes for a hair cut tomorrow, so maybe that will help or not. LOL! We should break 100 miles for the month Friday or Saturday. We only have 4.5 miles left to go. It's been a struggle, but the mile counter has kept me going.

I didn't do strength training yesterday thinking I would give my back a break, but it didn't help at all. My back still bothered me. I had to ice and take some extra ibuprofen anyway. I went back to my regular routine this morning and I feel better...so who knows

I'm definitely doing the 10 Miler. Not sure what my plan is yet for the race. I will probably hit the expo early Friday to avoid the crowds and not sure what the plan is for driving to the race. I HATE to Metro to a big race like that.

I HATE to Metro to a big race like that. I Metro'd to the MCM 10K - I caught the first train out of Vienna, so it wasn't bad, but did make for an early morning. If you have any good inside tips on parking, I may take my car in rather than drive. It looks like there may be another govt shutdown again this October, so it will be interesting to see if they planned the route with that in mind. I hated all the anxiety around the MCM and the shutdown last year - it was my first big race and I really didn't want it to be cancelled.

MCM was my first big race, too. So much fun! For the Cherry Blossom we parked at the Reagan Building and it was easy peasy! The gal that drove bought the parking pass on line ( I think it was maybe $10-15) and we were able to park and leave with no problems. I think the company is called Panda Parking. My DH and I metro'ed in for the MCM and it was a nightmare to get home. ***TMI ALERT*** I also had some hot chocolate at McD's after the race and OMG…no one told me what that would do to my tummy. It had the potential to get ugly. I did get home in time. Barely.
Please tell me you are kidding about another shut down. That is completely unsat. I will be so angry if the 10 Miler gets messed up and disappointed for the 26.2 runners if the marathon gets cancelled.

Is that with the Nike app? Yes. It's with the free version of the Nike app. I don't know if it starts over every month or not. I've only been using it for July. I was having a hard time using Map My Walk app because the dog was always pausing for a potty break etc and I'd have to dig out my phone to hit pause. The Nike app pauses automatically (sometimes it takes a few secs), but it's better than me digging for the phone. And it also announces your distance and time if you want (you can set it for mile, 1/2 mile or 1/4 mile). It really makes me push it to the next mile, especially when I know I am pretty close.

It would be great to not have to check much, if anything. Unfortunately, I'm not kidding about the shutdown. There has been talk about it already, and since this Congress seems hell bent on doing nothing about anything, I won't be surprised. The 10 Miler went on with just a change in route, even though the government was still shutdown when it happened, but they were definitely going to cancel the MCM if the government didn't start up again.

I'm with you on needing some kind of event to keep me motivated. Far from the kind of runner most of you folks are, but trying! We've actually got a few of us at work that are going to find a 5K for this fall to enter as a group - that should be fun! And, I've decided that, thanks to your feedback, to enter a half marathon. I'm going to try for either spring or next fall, depending on what's out there. I'm about set on the Athens GA Half Ath for Fall 2015. There's the Cooper River Bridge run in April - maybe I can find 1 or 2 5K's scattered in there too.

I got in a few miles tonight. Thanks to Elaine, I've been trying out walk/run intervals (run 4 minutes, walk 1 minute) this summer and I've been enjoying my runs more than usual. This one tonight was a bear, though. It was still 90 degrees out after 7pm, and the humidity was at a level of "Holy Crap I Can't Breathe!". I was really dragging.

Both my kids and my son's girlfriend have done the Cherry Blossom 10 miler. We've gone down twice to watch and cheer them on. At the time, my daughter had a place in Falls Church so we metro'd in. We usually go out to eat afterward and haven't had trouble with the metro. How fun if a bunch of Peas, or is it former Peas?!? ran it?

On Tuesday nights, I meet with a beginner's running course, and this week I ran 2.28 miles with my running buddies. We could have done more, but the coach had other drills planned. She taught us how to time our "cadence" which was new to me. It is basically the [HASH] of times your feet hit the ground in 1 minute. It was fascinating to me that your cadence should remain the same regardless of your pace...I still struggle to wrap my mind around that.
I'm looking forward to running 3 miles on my own tomorrow morning. Yesterday I signed up for my first 10K on September 6, so I have mapped out a training plan for myself for the next 6 weeks.

Parking Panda still has parking available .5 miles from the start line for $8.25. I went ahead and reserved a spot - you can cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours in advance.

Sounds like everyone is having a great week! candygurl - I mostly love training - even the long runs. I don't love every run, but I'm always glad I got out there. I also give myself permission to skip a run if I really don't feel like it, which really helps to take the pressure off. But, I find that having a race does keep me motivated which is why I'm pretty much always training for a 1/2. elaine - I'm glad you were able to hit the road running! I hope that the cast starts feeling less awkward. pattyg - Welcome! mamanay - Sounds like you'll easily beat 100 miles this month! That's awesome! ~Susan~ - Hope your back feels better soon! atomicdog - That's so exciting that you're going to sign up for a 5K & a half! You can do it! janeliz - I just keep thinking about how much easier it will feel to run in the fall! mom2emilytaryn - That's interesting about cadence. Congrats on signing up for the 10K & have fun on your run tomorrow! I need to get to sleep - the alarm is set for 6 so I can get my four miles in before I take my son to camp & it gets too hot. I am so proud of myself right now. Just got a little over 3 miles in (are tracks a smidge over a mile or is my gps off?). My phone said it was 100% humidity the whole time I was out there. I thought I was dying. I came very close to quitting after 1 mile, but I pressed in and went two. Then sat down for just a second with my 6 yr old (he sits on a bench at the track and watches me), got up and walked once around with him, then dropped him back off and finished strong at 3. How's everyone else doing today?

I have a question about cadence. I use ISmoothRun and it says my cadence is between 55-65. I'm 5'11" and I'm focusing on taking smaller steps, but even when I feel like I'm taking tiny ones, it just goes up in the 60's. What am I doing wrong?

Got out this morning and did 3.6 of walking 2-3 minutes, then running 3-4. It felt good! Didn't know how to handle the wind tho, we haven't had any for so long, ha! So excited to have over 9000 steps already in the day! Guess running is the way to go to get more steps in faster!!!! Going to a scrappy retreat weekend tomorrow and hoping to get some time on even if it's on the hotel treadmill.

I walked/ran 2.6 miles this morning in 94% humidity. Yuck! Is it fall yet? lol But I am feeling much better about my first 5K this weekend. I may be slow, but I'm confident that I will finish it now. 94% humidity? OMG! I can't even. I've been running exclusively for the last few months and I thought I was in pretty good shape. But I took my kiddos out on a hike last week instead of running. Holy crap. I was so sore! It felt good to finally feel something again though. I wonder if I should start adding some other types of exercising on my "off" day, ya know? I only did 2 miles last night (with long hill) because I'm still sore. I swear it was like running in place trying to get up that hill.

I also got in 3.5 miles this morning. It was heavenly to run in cooler weather. Usually, in this heat, miles 3 onward are 12:15 or slower, but I was able to stay at 11:30 this morning! Then I walked the dog for 2 miles, so I've gotten my steps and miles done for the day by 10 am.

I have a question about cadence. I use ISmoothRun and it says my cadence is between 55-65. "Perfect" cadence is 180 from what I recall. When we measure with my running group, we time for only 30 seconds and only count one leg. So my typical cadence is 44 steps on my right leg in 30 seconds, which gives me an overall cadence of 176. Try to count it on your own without the app to get a better feel for it. I would think it would be darn near impossible to only take 55-65 steps in one minute!

I've thought about that but is thee a monthly fee? i figure i have enough music so i shouldn't pay anything for music, but i have thought about it. It is a low monthly fee, but if opined it worth it. I have a ton of music and a couple of running playlists of my own, but I get bored easily. I do enjoy the mash-ups - mixing of parts of songs - in the RockMyRun mixes. It is rare that a whole song is played all the way through, instead you get the best couple of minutes of each songs before it is blended into something else, sometimes coming back to the first song. So, a 40 minute playlist often has a mix of 15+ songs. You might not think it is worth it however. There is a FREE version that doesn't give you access to all the mixes, you might want to try that out and see if it is for you.
