I decided to get all fancy and make individual fruit tarts. What was I thinking? This time I made them using cookie dough as a shortcut for the crust. EPIC FAIL. I have a huge mess in the oven because they rose over the tart pan and all over everywhere. They also don't come out of the tart pan whole. Grrrrrr Anyone else have have some part of their preparation go wrong?

I tried to make All Bran rolls. I have made them before, using an ancient recipe from a church cookbook, but they never tasted *quite* right. The woman who wrote that recipe for the church cookbook was, well, mean. And nasty. I knew her my whole life, and she was just bitter and petty as long as I knew her. (Although she was a pretty awesome cook.) I am convinced she wrote the recipe wrong so that no one could make rolls exactly like hers. So this year, I decided to search for alternate recipes, and I found several that deviated from the old recipe in some pretty significant ways. For one, they nearly all just had two risings, not three.
I started the dough Sunday. I made half of the batch into cloverleaf rolls. They *looked* so good... and they tasted so wrong. I put the other half of the dough in the fridge, intending to get back to work on them Monday night after work, but there's so much going on in the preparation, I didn't get around to it. So the dough has sat there for two extra days, and my son tells me it is starting to croak. I'm not sure what that means, other than I think I'll be buying Sister Schubert's tonight on the way home from work. Stupid yeast! I shouldn't even try to bake.

We are having Thanksgiving dinner tonight. The fresh green beans we bought at the grocery store Monday evening already went bad. I took them back this morning and bought some others at Costco.

The restaurant that we ordered our meal from forgot our green beans. I know you are hoping that this turned into some epic "I have NO turkey" debacle, but I'm going to have to disappoint you all. (My spell check changed disappoint to knifepoint lol). I called the restaurant, they verified that the beans were on one list but not the other, and my mom ran to pick them up. And they gave her a 15 dollar gift card for the trouble, which they totally did not need to do.

Sister Schubert's is THE bomb anyway and you can not go wrong EVER with Sister's rolls. We had some of the cinnamon rolls this morning. (Okay, the boy and I managed to eat the entire tray between the two little piggies that we are.) I said on another thread that if I were a lesbian, and sister were real (which I think she is) I would gay marry her just so I could have her make me rolls every day.

Our turkey trot t-shirts didn't show up. They were supposed to arrive yesterday or today and I got an email an hour ago that they are going to ship tonight.

Sister is real and lives in South Alabama! My epic accident was last night - checking to see how much brown sugar was in the container and I dropped said container on the kitchen floor which is brick pavers. So I go get the vacuum to clean up my mess. Brown sugar is on the wheels of vacuum, bottom of my shoes, on my pants and inside the vacuum. I take a break and finish cooking dinner, clean the wheels of vacuum and clean bottom of vacuum (it is a Shark and comes off stand). Finish all that and think ugh, ants might smell this and come marching in. I get hot soapy water and scrub said brick floor.
Not sure how tonight's cooking will go.

First I was a nun.... Then I got married and had kids... Now I'm a lesbian! So you never know...

I've been researching this for weeks & Dh & I decided last night to re-stain our hideous 1990's oak kitchen cabinets. Our kitchen is huge. We have a total of 54 doors & drawers. We stayed up all night cleaning and sanding our oak cabinets. I know white cabinets are in but I wanted to go darker than what we have.Today we started staining & it currently looks like someone smeared shit everywhere. LOL! Needless to say, it's likely to go down in history as my biggest T-day disaster ever.

My DS does not like cake, so one year for his birthday, he asked for a big chocolate chip cookie. I tried to bake it on a pizza pan. Yeah, it rose up and over the pan and it ended up all over the bottom of the oven. That was fun.

My first disaster is my DH saying "yes" to dinner at his parents. My second will be dinner at his parents.

My pumpkin pie crusts are more mahogany than golden. I suspect the parts underneath are fine, and I don't like pumpkin pie anyway, so it's not disaster-worthy.
One of my cats just knocked over a vase of flowers about half an hour before company was to arrive. The vase landed on my TV console, shattered into 10 million pieces, and has probably still left a pound of glass dust in the carpet, even post-vacuuming.

I'm sorry everyone has suffered some sort of disaster, but it's nice to know I'm not alone. I made turkey shaped sugar cookies because.......I have no idea why. I was feeling like I had everything under control and could take the time to make them I guess. <shrug> I didn't need them for a dessert and no one here even eats sugar cookies. But, I own the cookie cutter and what other occasion could I use it? Anyway, I only made 9, and as I was taking the cookie sheet out of the oven, the parchment started to slide and I overreacted and threw, and I mean literally threw the the whole batch, parchment and all, into the oven. I threw them so hard that two of them hit the back wall of the oven, then shattered and sprayed cookie bits all over inside and outside the oven. On the plus side, I had already finished all of my other baking. And, now my oven is sparkling clean and the smoke detector has been thoroughly tested and works just fine.

I followed the recipe for my cake, but something somewhere went wrong. It looked so pretty when I took it out of the oven. Toothpicks came out clean, and then it started sinking. It ended up with several hills and valleys. I tried to cut off some of the tallest peaks, so it looks kind of OK. The taste is just blah though. I'm hoping my frosting is so good no one will notice.

I tried a new filled coffee cake recipe today. It's from King Arthur flour, and I usually have good luck with their recipes, but this one ain't looking so hot. Mine redefines peaks and valleys, lol! I know it has filling and then a crumb layer, but this just doesn't look right. I haven't tasted it, though, so it might be just fine. Unless it's divine, though, I probably won't make it again. Too much trouble for something that looks this awful!

I always host Thanksgiving, inviting both my family as well as DH'S family, this year it is 25 people. Yesterday, my kindergarten DS was sent home from school with lice!!!!! I have never dealt with this before, and I freaked out a bit! Apparently many kids in his class were sent home, so he somehow got it in school. Luckily, my other 2 boys were clean. Like I said, I freaked out, called my sister and asked if she could host, which she will, and graciously welcomed my DH'S family as well. We all get along great, so it will still be fun. Most everyone stays overnight as well, so it is a 2 day event.
Today I am making 5 pies, 15 pounds of mashed potatoes, jello lego bricks, and prepping veggies for dressing.

I'll let you know later tonight after I attempt Pioneer Woman's Pumpkin Cheesecake with Gingersnap Crust and homemade caramel sauce. I have never made cheesecake before, or anything in a springform pan. I see a late-night dessert replacement trip to the grocery store in my future...

Y'all are making me scared to step into my kitchen! I am doing pre-made everything tomorrow, except for the turkey and sweet potatoes, which will be from scratch. I even got store-bought pie. So not too many chances for things to go pear-shaped, as the Brits say.

I'm also making a pumpkin cheesecake tonight; I have fears about the oven, and possibly uneven temps. It's been years since I last made a cheesecake. My hope is that, even if it looks bad, it will still taste wonderful.

Nothing big here so far all that happened today is that while I was at the store my sister decided to make the cranberry sauce. Unfortunately I was buying the sugar for the cranberry sauce while I was out. She was able to add the sugar later when I got home so it worked out ok.

No real Thanksgiving meal mess up yet - but our doxxie hurt is back about a month ago. He was getting better, but then he started dragging his leg pretty bad. And today? Yes, today is the day he decided to lose the ability to hold his urine. I have cleaned up mess after mess. And when I am not cleaning it up, I am carting him outside to try and get him to go potty. This is so out of character for him, so I know he isn't doing it on purpose. Just makes me sad. And really tired from all the mopping.

While making pumpkin bread my 2 year old dumped the entire large box of baking soda on the floor. Luckily I was able to scoop the teaspoon I needed for the bread off the top of the pile (where it hadn't touched the floor) before I cleaned up the mess.
