get a ticket.
You know how you're not supposed to cut through parking lots? Well, the road that is the most direct route to my job has been blocked due to construction for months. Today, it was opened. ALMOST.
Coworkers told me the road was now open, but you have to 'go around local GAS STATION'. What they meant was "CUT THROUGH local gas station". I approach the 'go around' area and see that I'll have to cut through. It's one of those gas stations that is just for commercial customers with special gas cards. It's unmanned, and all you can do is pump gas.
As I pull in to drive through, I see a sheriff parked in the lot. So I drive up to a pump and get out, pretending to swipe my card. Then act like my card is defective, try again and get back in my car. I drive off, hoping I look legit.
Apparently I did. There is so much road construction in our town lately, that police are actually staking out the areas where people are cutting through parking lots. Tickets are being issued.

I've never heard of it being illegal to go through a parking lot. At least, not in Ontario. In fact, Ontario is the only province where the provincial Highway Act does not apply in parking lots because they are privately owned.

That's so funny! Great thinking. I once got into a funeral procession because I needed to be somewhere and there seemed to be no end to the funeral cars. Unfortunately, I was overcome with a huge case of the giggles once I was in the line of cars. It was truly awesome!

Unfortunately, I was overcome with a huge case of the giggles once I was in the line of cars. It was truly awesome! I thought about doing that once recently because I swear I had been waiting 10 minutes already. There was an opening at one point for me to sneak in, but I decided against it because I was afraid of being found out.

I think it can be considered trespassing, not a moving violation like speeding.

While taking a criminal justice course, the professor asked "what things do people do while driving that really tick you off, and make you wish that person got a ticket?" Somebody responded with "cutting through a gas station to avoid traffic" The professor looked up the code, and it was determined to be legal, as long as the person had turned on the blinker at least 200 feet/yards (I forgot) prior to turning. This was in the California code book, at least back in 1991. I wonder if this ticket would be disputable.

Good thinking!! I have done something similar before. I cut through a strip mall parking lot once to avoid a really long red light, only to see that a cop was parked there, and maybe he was looking to ticket people? So then I just parked the car and went into the Office Max for a minute. Time-wise I would have been better off sitting through the really long red light.

Funny, just this weekend, there was a similar situation by us.
They were doing roadwork and there was a gas station that was very convenient to go through to make a right turn. There was a sign stating something like "don't cut through here per XYZ police department."
But the name of the police department was blacked out-like a giant sharpee.
So I would figure the owner put this up and the police said that they could not do this; so the owner, etc blacked out the name of the police department.
Based on this, I guess we can probably can do it.

I had an ex-boyfriend whose brother was ticketed for cutting through a parking lot. He pulled into the gas station and realized he didn't have enough money for gas so he drove through the station lot and was pulled over.

I had a friend ( I was passengering at the time) get a ticket for cutting through a parking lot to avoid a light, it was as much as a speeding ticket. Up until that happened I had no idea that was actually illegal. You are super clever!

Girl I'd have done the same thing and I think I have before! It's illegal here too. :/

I have been followed by a cop for doing that but he was nice enoigh to just give me a warning. I was only 19 and had just gotten my license and was running late to school.

Anyone else hear the Mission:Impossible theme in their head as they read the OP? No? Just me? Carry on, then.

I always thought you could get a ticket for it. Good thinking! Seems like people would try to do it often if they were allowed.

I'm pretty sure you can get ticketed for it here too. Good call on "pumping" gas. Glad it worked!

Unfortunately, cutting through a parking lot to miss a red light or intersection is considered a moving violation in our neck of the woods.

Maybe I'd be ok without the pretending, then. This route is just part of a detour. I wasn't 'avoiding' a traffic light or circumventing anything, really.

Yeah I am always to nervous to try it.. as I heard it was illegal...however, on my way home there is a liquor store right on a corner and then train tracks across the street. Now if I am paying attention I will turn on the street before the liquor store to avoid the train and go a different way.. IF I happen to pass that street, then I will look around a million times before cutting through the liquor store.. the trains in this particular area are VERY slow and it isn't unheard of to wait over 20 minutes for the train to get through.

Here in Bulgaria, there are 2 places I can think of offhand where a gas station was built literally in the middle of the road. It's expected that if you want to take that road, you'll drive through the gas station parking lot. Too funny!! I can't imagine that happening in the USA.
