Do you add paint/ink splatters/drops to your layouts? Can you tell me why you do or don't? Is there an artistic reason for this technique? Is this a trend we will look back on in the future and regret?
I've tried this technique on three layouts and immediately replaced the background paper on each. I've seen a couple of layouts online where the splatters may have enhanced the layout, but small sequins, enamel dots, etc., would have looked better (IMHO). I admire the work of MaryAnn Jenkins and she sometimes uses splatters in an attractive and controlled way.
Another designer I greatly admire adds large ink drops on her stunningly beautiful layouts while I hold my breath thinking, Nooo, please don't! This artist must have an artistic reason for doing this and I am missing the reason.
Please don't smack me, really interested and just trying to understand:)

I've been doing it for years, and I love it. I use it as a way to add visual interest and a bit of physical texture to the background. A way to layer and add interest without adding physical layers (ie, more paper). Sometimes a layout just needs something, and some drops/splatters/watercolour works well to fill in that space without "blocking up" the layout. I also prefer to use drops and splatters under stamping and other small embellishments to ground them a little -- sometimes a small embellishment works fine on its own, but sometimes it looks lost and floaty. Drops/paint can also add some energy and direction to a page, helps with the overall design. It's not for everyone (nothing is!).

Ihave tried to embrace this technique as I have seen so many layouts and watched videos where I think it looks really good. I, however, end up with either a big mess, or just something that looks stupid. I'm not giving up yet (I guess because I have quite a few mists) but I sometimes think I need to just go with MY style which is clean and simple!

If spattering isn't for you, it is just not and you don't need to feel like it is something you have to do. I use a limited amount of spattering. Usually, it is for fun or the other elements of the LO seemed to call for it. Just an additional layer or texture where it fits. I've noticed that I tend to spatter corners or on the diagonal. I don't think I'll regret it as a trend since it is only on a few LOs here or there. Besides, it is not like mustaches, feathers or chandeliers on pages that have nothing to do with men, birds or dining rooms, respectively. LOL (Not that there is anything wrong with that!)

It's a look. No more, no less. If you don't like it, then don't do it. There are lots of looks for scrapbooking that I've managed to avoid over the years. This one, I enjoy and I'm using up all these mists that have mysteriously multiplied in my stash...
Sometimes I use enamel dots AND splatters! I know! Splatters are way cheaper than enamel dots as well.

Thanks everyone for your insightful comments! I have a better understanding of the "why" and realize I am splatter challenged. You know what that means...I'm going to try a few more before I give up on splatters!

I hope no one minds if I give a few examples. On this layout, the camera stamp looked completely lost and free-floating on the bottom right corner, so I added some watercolour splashes. I added a bit on the top middle and top right of the layout, too, to balance the colour on the bottom right of the page: On this page, I added a lot of black misting and black splatters behind the photo, to help draw attention to it. I also added in small black embellishments over top. On their own, they were completely lost on the busy floral paper, but on the black they stood out -- and also looked completely at home because they helped mimic the black splattering. OK, and one last page. This one I also used black on (I've been on a black kick lately, I've used it more in the past three months than I have in the entire 10 years I've been scrapping!). I added some heavy, big drop splatters to "fill in" an empty spot. The black splatters helped fill in that block, because it needed *something* but when I added paper, tags, etc, they were too heavy and block-y looking. Then I added just a tiny bit of light blue-grey on the top left of the page to help add some continuity and balance to the heavy black splatters.

I understand Ashley's use of splatter to help balance her pages in areas where she feels it is needed....I do the same with other techniques, stickers, die cuts, ribbon, words, etc. It's a great thing that there's no right or wrong answer as it's all personal choice.

I never understood it until a had a friend challenge me to do it and now I love it! It think it helps pull things together for me. I don't do it in ever LO though. I have used a marble and covered it in paint or ink and rolled it around on white 12x12 CS I loved the way it turned out. ashley - love the LOs you posted!

I don't do it often, but when it turns out OK (which isn't every time for me) I do like the look. I prefer the opaque white (especially on kraft) to the glimmer mists.

Im trying this tonight! I put my 12x12 CS in a old priority mail box flat and the top half was cut off...it was so much easier to roll marble around on the CS like that..all I did was tilt box. Hope that made sense lol!

Some wonderful, insightful comments have been posted! Those comments along with the examples will be very helpful to anyone who has just started creating with this technique. As with any technique, trend or scrappy idea, you must find what you enjoy. If you are doing something that doesn't feel comfortable, it will take a bit of joy out of your creative soul.

I use them on some layouts and not on others. Sometimes I am prompted by a sketch & the placement will corelate to sketch. If adding them myself, I tend to go on the diagonal to aid in page flow. I think they're fun and sometimes will mix sequins, enamel dots and/or wood veneers in with the splatters.

OK...we need to see some of the marble pages! What a neat idea...anyone have some they could share?
I haven't successfully splattered, but it's on my list of things to practice more.

I did, last night!
I have a layout I am working on. The background is Kraft and the photos of Fife & Drum Crops are matted in navy, cranberry, hunter green and royal blue. There is like an inch and a half between some of the photos and i could not figure out what to out there. I tried all kinds of embellishments and could find nothing that went. I removed the photos and splattered the paper with black acrylic paint. It looks so nice with the Colonial outfits the groups are wearing. That is why I splattered.

I find I tend to splatter on layouts with a masculine look. Like my son is a bass player in a rock band and I splatter with black a lot on his pages to give it a "rough" look. Oh ya, and I marble paint a lot with my daycare children…..lol Never thought to do it on a layout, will have to try that! Love all the layouts above.

I do not. It's just a trend that hasn't appealed to me. I don't like the look for my pages or my books, but I get that other people enjoy it and I'm good with that. Some times I'll like other people's pages before they add the splatters better; sometimes I like it better afterwards. I still won't do it on my own pages though.

I am not an artsy scrapbooker, so splattering on a page doesn't happen a lot for me. I will add splatters only when it feels like it would add to the layout, almost like thinking of it as an embellishment.

I have an inherently very clean, classic style so it's not a natural thing for me to splatter or mist. But I'll do it occasionally when I want to mix things up and create more whimsical, easy-going pages

I'd like to see some of the marble pages too! I don't use ink splatters on every page but sometimes it just helps to tie everything together and adds a little texture.

I like to splatter I went to a class with Heidi Swapp and the Glimmer Mist owner when they first came out...so many different things to do with them than just splattering. Glitter Girl also does a bit of splattering and she explains the design concept behind it...if those videos are still available after today.

It just does not fit my very clean style. I think it fits more with the more artsy pages.

I tried (and did) on two layouts.
The splatter technique will be left in the "I sometimes like it on other people's layouts but not my own" category.

I have a love/hate relationship with splattering. I like it on other people's LOs. I sometimes like it on mine, but most times do not. I must not have the right technique. Instead of roundish splats, mine ver long.
