At least its seems that way. The water level never goes down in her bowl while we're away. And when we come home she goes straight to her bowl and drinks and drinks and drinks. It's almost like she's thinking "well no one is here to let me out if I need to pee so I'd better not drink." lol. Weird. Anyone else's dog do this or is this just one of my dog's odd quirks? She's very cute though.

Ours doesn't eat when we're gone, not sure about the drinking though. Same with ours. He'll go all day from early am to late night and not touch food or biscuits left out for him. He carries the biscuits from room to room, but he won't eat until we sit at the table. Weird dog

My dog does the exact same thing. I get home from work, let her out to pee, and she immediately comes in and drinks until she throws up. I thought she wasn't drinking during the day because she'd have to pee too.

My Lhasa Apso would do that and he wouldn't eat either. It used to drive me crazy especially when we had to board him. I would ask the boarders how he did and they said he seemed to eat just enough to get by He more than made up for it when he got home though

My cat won't drink out of those refillable water bowls with the jugs on them. But he will drink out of the dogs bowl so now we don't even bother filling his

Ours rarely drink while we're gone. Almost everyday we can put a bowl full of fresh water down for them and it will stay full until we come home. No clue why, it makes zero sense to me because ours can go out to pee when they need to. Just one of their many quirks :-)

Is he drinking from the toilet. Mine isn't, because we always shut doors when we go away. Plus, if she was I wouldn't think she'd drink quite so much when we finally get home.

Mine does the exact same thing. After he greets me at the door, the first thing he does is run to his water bowl and drinks like he's thirsting to death.

Ours won't drink either when we are gone. I always assumed it was because she knew we weren't there to let her out to pee. I work from home, so it's pretty rare we that someone isn't home.

I've had three dogs as an adult and none of them have drank when I'm gone. They just sleep. Lazy bums!

This is just an uneducated guess, but I think she's guarding the nest. In the wild, a dog is left to guard the den of pups and does not move until the pack comes home with food. Her instincts may be telling her to not eat or drink while she's on 'duty'.

Our dog doesn't eat when we are gone... never paid much attention to the water... will have to next time we go out. Silly dogs!

My dog is the same - won't eat or drink unless someone is home. She also for not eat her food out I her bowl. She carries 2-3 pieces from the mud room to the living room. drops them, sniffs them then eats them. Repeat this several times. Might explain why she only weighs 4 pounds! She is getting old (12 years) and I think is losing her eyesight and/or memory as I often find her little piles of food throughout the living room now - so I thinks she is dropping them, gets sidetracked and forgets where they are or can't see them.

One of my dogs drinks puddle water, swimming pool water, and the water in the bottom of the shower but won't drink the water in his bowl unless it's been there less than an hour. Weirdo.

Our dog doesn't drink while we are gone, but he also doesn't drink if it is raining or really cold outside. I totally think it is because he knows he can't go out to pee (in the first case) or doesn't want to go out (in the weather case).

Lol at these dogs. Thanks for all the stories, and for letting me know that my dog has company in the "oddball" category. My dd appreciated these stories also.
My dog is a diva and hates to go out to pee when the grass is wet. She doesn't want to get her bottom wet when she crouches. Sometimes she'll do a little half crouch then stand up and look at me like "okay, let's go home now". But I am not fooled and I make her walk up and down till she really pees. This is usually at night when we take her out for her pre-bed potty break. She will NOT go out in the backyard by herself in the dark. hahaha. lol

Same with my precious. I can even leave a treat out and she will not touch it until the second I get home. Now if she can find a paper towel that I have used as a coaster or similar - she will shred it in a million pieces the instant that I leave !!!

One of ours won't pee in the side yard when we're away. It's concrete and he just refuses to go. As soon as we get home he races to the back yard and is one very happy doggie! Aren't they funny?

We had one who did the exact same thing. We would walk in the door, she would greet us and then run to her bowl and drink it dry.

Same thing here. She never drinks her water when we are out but sucks down a bowlful as soon as we walk in the door.

Both of mine do the same thing. They do not touch their water when we are gone but almost fight over the water dish when we walk in the door.

Honestly, I've not paid attention so I cannot answer that question. I do have four dogs and none have accidents at home, one of which is a Rottweiler who drinks A LOT!!!!I can only assume they do know........ Wanted to add, after we get home he drinks, and drinks, and drinks BEFORE he goes out to do his business

As soon as Piper greets us when we get home, we take her out for a walk, and then she immediately dashes to her bowl and starts slurping up water.
I've always thought it was a response to not having anyone around to take her out for a walk.
