Thinking of a craft table as Christmas gift for DD. Any suggestions or tables to avoid?

I took over our pool table with a dining cover. Kind of expensive for a craft table, lol

I have one of those fold up ones from Costco. The only down side is it has a lot of give which can be a challenge if she does stamping.

Was thinking of a countertop height with storage for random crafty supplies. She's a tween & this would be in her "tween room" downstairs. Have seen them online but wonder if they're worth the money.

What about a book shelf with a pull down cabinet that is the desk?

I have this Ikea THYGE which I bought almost 10 years ago. It doesn't have any storage but it's a great desk and super sturdy. The legs adjust so you can have it any height you like. I keep mine as low as it goes and it has my sewing machine on it.

I have this one that I got at Costco. Not sure if it's still available there, but I've been very happy with it. It's very sturdy and has a lot of storage.

I use this IKEA kitchen island as my craft table, which would probably be a bit much for a tween, but a smaller, less expensive island might work for her. It would be counter height, and many have drawers and shelves. I love the butcher block top on mine ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) .

You can make one fairly inexpensively with two bookshelves facing out topped with either a hollow core door, a piece of countertop, or an IKEA desk top for the work surface. If you search on Pinterest you will find all kinds of DIY craft tables like this.

Thanks for posting this. It's exactly what I need for my sewing room. I'm going to have to make more than one trip to IKEA to get what I need to outfit the room. Wish it wasn't such a long drive and hassle to shop there.

Pottery barn art tableI have that one, which is a bit pricey, but you can easily make something similar using two bookshelves as ends and putting a board across the top. I like all the storage built in and the large surface for both crafts and cutting fabric.

I've made 2 of the hollow door- Walmart bookcase tables. They look great, and were cheap and are very functional. One is for our schoolroom, it's painted with chalkboard paint which is fun. The other is my sewing/craft/junk table. The bookcases give a spot for "stuff", I have tension rods in mine with fun orange curtains to hide the junk. You could do a cute print, buy so e matching baskets/organization things.

Probably not what you're looking for in a gift, but I can always find used dining room tables at Goodwill for about $20. They are actually quite nice. I'm not really sure why people are getting rid of them.
So in total we have three of them in our house. LOL. Two as crafting tables and one dd uses as a make up table. (They're rectangle, not the oval ones. I just started visualizing it and it looked odd in my head as oval.)

I have a counter height table that we purchased from a scratch and dent sale at a furniture store. It was $75 and the bar chair was $25. Best money EVER spent. It has a leaf and it's nice to have the choice to use it or not, depending on the house and the space I have. (military family) For a while, I used shelves, plastic drawers, etc under the table or just had it open. But after our last move, I set up my studio in the formal dining room, which is open to the rest of the house. So I knew I'd need to keep it tidy looking. I bought 16 Jetmaxx cubes for underneath it. Best decision ever. I have plenty of room for my stuff (well, I have the 5x5 Expedit and 2 tall bookshelves as well ![](http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/r481/2peasrefugees/Smilies/blush.jpg.gif) ). But it all looks good out there in the open. I'll find a picture and post it. ![](http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac208/Basket1lady/55592644-0f42-4989-84bf-093a99ca183b_zps84or65gk.jpg)

I use one of the IKEA kitchen islands as my cutting table. It has three drawers and a couple of shelves. It's perfect since it's countertop height and has the built in storage. I think it was around $400.

Great suggestions!!
Please don't get the molded white tables that are out there. They have too much "give" to them. They are ok as a secondary table, but not the main one because of the "give".

Here's an idea-if you have an Ikea near you what about giving her a hand made gift card that says you'll take her to Ikea after Christmas, just the two of you on a shopping trip and let her pick out her own craft desk? You can measure her room beforehand, she can look through what they have online to get some ideas, and then the two of you can go on a special day trip to pick it out.
I think it's a very individual thing-a craft desk. It depends on what type of crafts she is making. Is she rubber stamping? Coloring in the new adult coloring books? Drawing? How much space will she need? As a scrapbooker I've found the more space, the better.
As far as height preference-counter vs. regular desk height-that's up to the individual too.
As for me I bought my desk from Ikea 15 years ago. I adore it. I bought from a line of office furniture that they don't make anymore. It's kind of like the BEKANT corner desk rune2484 linked but then I added 1 more modular section to the left and 2 more modular sections (1 large, 1 tiny) to the right. It's a huge desk, but I have it down in my finished basement. It really came in handy when I was homeschooling my son.
Anyway, that's an idea. Let your DD choose the desk. Obviously for her it wouldn't be anything like mine. But like I said, I think it's very individual.

I have a Goodwill dining table in my sewing room that I LOVE. It has wrought iron legs and dh picked it up for me for $12. Perfect height for a cutting table and great for crafting at while seated. I am not a fan of open shelving/storage because between the dust and sewing lint/thread, it's a PITA to keep clean. I have a Martha Stewart Craft Table that I was extremely lucky to find on Craigslist for $75 that I use next to my sewing table for storage and for crafting projects I can do while standing. I have big bins below the drawers for storing fabric and shoe boxes for smaller items. Finally I found an electric sewing table on Craigslist in Michigan and my wonderful dh drove all the way to pick it up for me - 500 miles each way. It's a Horn Multi lift table like this one and I was so lucky to find it. I use a backless Saddle stool which is height adjustable for seated projects. I paid less than half the current asking price on Amazon.

Total cost was under $150. I stand and work at it all day but over the summer I picked up a cheap counter-height chair at Ikea for when I feel like having a seat.

I have the Costco project table also. It's standing height, but also works great with a barstool. They might have them in stock again after Christmas. I love all of the storage that it has.

Sadly, closest IKEA is 3hrs away & I don't think I have time for a trip before Christmas. The Costco table is fantastic, but doesn't seem to be available. Thinking I made need to go the panel door route. Loving all your ideas!

I'm sitting on the bench with the crafty peas who like the table made from two sets of bookshelves or file cabinets with a tabletop set across them. Ballard Designs craft table and Pottery Barn Bedford craft table are my two favourites, although I like the height of the 2nd one more. The width of the Ballard Design table is extremely nice because I also want a wide tabletop for pinning patterns/cutting out fabric. The height of the table is a personal preference, but one that your dd needs to decide what she likes best. I fell in love with the height of the drafting tables in college--it was so nice to be able to work standing AND sitting or leaning against the adjustable stool--being able to stretch out instead of sitting hunched over my work. The bookshelves/table top would also work well in a small apartment. The shelves could live up against the wall and the tabletop stored underneath the bed and pulled out when required (I do think caster wheels would be extremely annoying--the brakes on them aren't very strong). I would have *loved* a table like this when I was first married and didn't have a lot of space to store a big craft table. I used my dining room table and a fold out cardboard mat that I put on top of my bed or the floor for pinning patterns and cutting fabric. A nice tabletop and two sets of bookshelves would have been a much loved piece of furniture for me. (My dining room table was the pine trestle table my dad made, and I absolutely loved having a piece of furniture that he gave me and made himself) I would also think about this gift of the table as a more long term investment for your dd. Giving her a craft table that could be taken apart and used in different ways would be a piece of furniture that she could use for a very long time and grow up with her. The two craft tables that I linked are very expensive, but as other peas have pointed out, the table is easily created by purchasing two sets of bookshelves/file cabinets of your choice and adding a table top--IKEA sells butcherblock countertop by the square foot. *the stores also have a clearance section of odd lengths of different countertops and various pieces of returned furniture/cancelled orders. Dh and I have gotten some great deals in that section. I also have a small sewing table that I found at a thrift store that holds my sewing machine and flips open to reveal a 2'x3' wood table to the left of the machine that makes it easier to sew curtains, duvet covers (easy to make from sheets and blankets), etc.
