My DH and I are considering it. I'd like to hear from those that have done this. What is the good and bad? We have a ten year old girl. The exchange student would be a 15-16 year old girl. I am wondering if we should wait till DD is a bit older?

Are you thinking of hosting for a school year? Do you know what country? We have hosted Chinese students for 2 weeks in the summer. The first was so easy. He was very polite and wanted to learn about American culture. I still keep in touch with him. The second boy was much less easy going. He wanted very little to do with our other kids. He was "angsty" and moody. Beyond personalities, there were language issues. They both spoke decent English but there was an additional level of concentration to have a conversation. Our neighbors have hosted 2 German students for an entire school year. With the first, she became like family. The second didn't last the entire 9 months and headed home at Christmas. It seems to me that hosting a kid is super dependent on the kid. If you get the right one, it's an amazing experience. If you don't ... it can be a bit less amazing.

It would be for the whole school year. I don't know what country yet. We are going to meet with the agency trying to place them this weekend. My DH is very gung ho about it. I am more hesitant and wanted to hear experiences others have had.

Since High School, I always thought we'd host an exchange student, but other than a long weekend, we have not. I hope that it is a good experience. And, may I say, it is so fabulous to see you! I can't believe you have a 10 year old - I remember when she was a baby

I don't have any particular experience, but I am pretty sure you'll be responsible for getting them to and from all sorts of school events. Which is fine if they go for, you know, one extra-curricular, but more of a burden if they're in six at once, you know?
