I always meet at our public library. It's very public, safe, and they have their own security.

To buy something. Would you call the non emergency police # and ask to have an officer there? I normally would have my DH go with me to meet someone like that, but it's something for him so I cant...and this person can only meet on my lunch hour, so I asked another girl at work to ride with me tomorrow. What would u do? I have only bought off craigslist twice. Once for a cat tree and we met in a Home Depot parking lot. And once when I bought a cat and drove to the cat's house to meet him first. I would not call the police to have an officer there. If you are concerned you could do your transaction in the Police Department parking lot.

I think the "them" she was referring to was the police, not Home Depot. oh okay. good to know. thanks for the clarification. I would have been deeply disappointed in HD. Or.... genius marketing idea from Home Depot? Because you know half the shit you buy on Craigslist is going to be broken or need refinishing. Head right on in to Home Depot to get all your supplies to pinterest those wooden palettes into an adorable outdoor couch! Hey, it could catch on...

I would ask a friend or family member to accompany me. I would NOT ask the police I would hope they would have better things to do than supervise someone's Christmas shopping. Yes, this.

I've done plenty of transactions on CL including selling my van and meeting the people alone at night.
I've even gotten my kids babysitting gigs on there. Yes, I realize I am going to Pea hell for that.
We bought my son's first Mac on there and met the woman at a Starbucks. Same with me getting a mini Ipad.
Just be smart. No need to involve the police. I've also hired handymen off of there. Never a problem.

I buy often off craigslist. i understand your concern. I always meet at a public place. Usual,y mcdonalds parking lot. I make sure that someone knows where and when I am meeting. In general it is safe.

HD could sell you some spray paint for that battered bike or some hooks to hang that painting of the dogs playing poker. maybe HD can designate a safe zone in the paint department or hardware. they don't even have to lend out employees, just provide that high traffic, well lit area with video surveillance. genius!

So you think a police officer should be available to be your own personal bodyguard?? Wow... Seriously?
ETA: I agree with the previous poster. It's incredibly selfish to ask a police officer to stand by while you conduct your Christmas shopping.
Of course safety is a concern when making a Craigslist transaction but asking the police to be your chaperone is unbelievable...

Not sure how big the item is that you are buying but around here, the police stations state that their lots can be used for Craigslist transactions.

I totally agree with everyone else that the police dept. has more important things to do.
But dang, have y'all never asked something you regret? I have.

My .02 cents: Since you are meeting at Home Depot, I would meet just outside the doors. I would NOT meet in the parking lot, even with someone with me. Large parking lots are not safe, day or night. I've known someone who got their car stolen that way. Two guys showed up and parked next to her and a friend. Both friends got out and the driver had her keys in her hand. The passenger of the other car got out and after a few words, grabbed her keys and jumped in the car and took off. Her car was never recovered. Since then, I've read of other instances that happened in large parking lots.
Inside a coffee shop is best if you can't meet at a local police station. Either way, never have your keys in your hand or purse, put them in your front pocket.

Our police department has made several fb posts that encourage people to meet others in the police station parking lot.

I would meet in a very public place, like a coffee shop or a gas station, where there are lots of people around. I would NOT call the police non-emergency number to expend critical resources on my personal transaction. Good luck! I've never used craigslist but I have used Kijiji. I have always met at Tim Hortons, where I know there are plenty of people. I have never had an issue.

We are meeting at home depot. And some towns around here have said u can ask for assistance from them if they have someone in the area.. are you serious? when did one of Home Depot's services include monitoring a CL transaction? it's hard enough to find someone who can tell me what aisle the super glue is located at much less find someone who can waste company time doing nothing company related. I can't imagine there is a Home Depot that would approve that because of the liability it would put them in if the transaction went back and one of their employees was somehow involved. I didn't say ask a home depot employee for help u idiot

I think the "them" she was referring to was the police, not Home Depot. Because I too already assumed that she meant the police as "them" I was wondering what this hype about Home Depot was, wondering if the hype was about picking it as the meeting place as the reason for the hype reaction. But then I read the quote again and was like oh, she probably thinks "them" is Home Depot, I get it now And yeah I don't think the cops have a bodyguard service. I like the idea of police station meet ups. It may even prevent the illegal sellings of stolen goods to happen since I'm sure they would not want to meet at a police station.

No. I sell a lot and they come to my house. I have never had a problem. Half the time they don't show up so it would piss me off if I sat and waited for someone who never showed up.
If you want to call the police, you shouldn't be selling on Craigslist.

I have been thinking about this for a long time, heck since the original 2peas...I don't understand the pile on towards the op. She simply asked a question. Why do so many people feel they have to be so rude? If you think it's a ridiculous question, move on. I have had some really nasty comments to things that I have posted, too, and I just don't get it.

Could you meet at the police station in the parking lot with out involving the police? I guess it depends on where yours is located. Ours is in a municipal building, so it would be easy for us. I would not bother the police for something like this. My friend's husband sells things occasionally and he always picks a public place to meet the buyer. Even if his friend is with him, they still like meeting at a public place.

Does your police department have a website? Maybe it, or your city's site, states if they offer their parking lot for transactions.

I'm terribly careless. I recently hired a handyman off Craigslist. He was here with me alone for 3 days. He even used my bathroom on several occasions! I live on the edge lol. I would go alone, with no reservations.
Anyway, OP, you know how things go around here. Take it in stride and stop calling people idiots and assholes.

I don't think home depot's parking lot is a bad choice. They have security cameras at least. The police around here do offer their parking lot if you'd like more security.

That seems like an incredibly selfish, inappropriate, ridiculous expectation of a police department. What the actual fuck? Because there are some sick people out there who use craigslist to lure people. There's your actual fuck u rude ass.... Then don't interact with anyone on Craigslist!!!! Wow, you're a special kind of stupid.
