People really show their true colors on posts like this. Is it really necessary to beat the OP up? Does it feel good to take it out on an anonymous chat board?

I always meet at our public library. It's very public, safe, and they have their own security. This made me chuckle! I live in a small town and the only security would be the little old lady behind the counter.

Our police department has made it known that people are welcome to use their lobby to make transactions.

I hate when I come into a thread too late to leave scathing comments. Lol
I can't in good conscience contribute further to this pile on, so I'll just add that like many others here, our PD encourages citizens to use their lot for CL transactions.

People really show their true colors on posts like this. I'd be including the op in that statement judging by the comments she made in response.

It's been a while since I've seen a pea pile on....I guess some things (and people) never change.

That seems like an incredibly selfish, inappropriate, ridiculous expectation of a police department. What the actual fuck? Follow common sense safety procedures. Meet in daylight at a public place. Don't give out your phone number and if something feels off cancel the transaction.

i am guilty of the pile on but i don't think i am alone in feeling shocked that someone would actually think of misusing the non emergency line in such a way. even for non emergencies, response times to actual calls are long enough as it is. public funds are practically non existent for hiring real police much less support staff to answer these kinds of calls. it's not surprising that people would have such strong feelings over the absurdity of using actual police to babysit a CL exchange. when you hear about people calling 9-1-1 because their McDonalds order was wrong or to get directions to Disneyland, you wonder what kind of people do that. today, one revealed herself and people were quick to pile on. me included. my need to pile on was also spurred by the thread about the Pea who got robbed the other day. what if police was not available to take a report or were delayed in going to her house because they were babysitting a purchase of a used Keurig? that is what ran through my mind as my personal pile on began. admittedly the tone could have been nicer but the shaking of the head remains the same.

The OP Never responded unkindly until SHE was called an idiot and various other names. I don't know anyone else that wouldn't have responded in kind. The one that started the whole name calling is pretty much known as a bully on here. So I'm not surprised. We could have all called her, naïve? maybe, but an idiot numerous times?

I'm terribly careless. I recently hired a handyman off Craigslist. He was here with me alone for 3 days. He even used my bathroom on several occasions! I live on the edge lol. I would go alone, with no reservations. Anyway, OP, you know how things go around here. Take it in stride and stop calling people idiots and assholes. Haha, you and me both! ![](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I have had service men and women here when I am home by myself and I don't think anything of it. Stuff like that doesn't worry me at all. (But I have other things that I am paranoid about that others wouldn't even worry about.)

I'm not sure if I'm guilty of the pile on, but I agreed the request would have been selfish. Police departments are stretched thin these days and I thought that was common knowledge.
Therefore, I just didn't understand how someone would think that kind of request would be ok. I think some people were surprised or dismayed at the kind of thinking that must go along with that kind of request.
Calling someone an idiot or an asshole is rude and uncalled for. But, This is a discussion board, and I think it's ok to tell someone if you think their question is inappropriate, selfish, etc...

are you serious? when did one of Home Depot's services include monitoring a CL transaction? it's hard enough to find someone who can tell me what aisle the super glue is located at much less find someone who can waste company time doing nothing company related. I can't imagine there is a Home Depot that would approve that because of the liability it would put them in if the transaction went back and one of their employees was somehow involved. I didn't say ask a home depot employee for help u idiot I don't think anyone called you an idiot...

Some police departments are now designating a parking space by their station houses for online shopping exchanges.
I might call to ask is the town had a space assigned, but not to have an officer present. They don't have the manpower for that.
My dh & I often purchase stuff online and often meet in parking lots.

I would NOT call the police non-emergency number to expend critical resources on my personal transaction. ![:yeahthat:](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/yrGoHMAelQz8f2Qt0sjb.jpg) I can't get my breath that such an idea would enter anyone's head, if I am honest. I can well imagine how such a request would be met in the UK if you rang the non urgent number.

I usually meet them in a public place. Around here, if you called and asked for an officer to show up I think dispatch would laugh...there's no way they'd send a call like that out.

I have been thinking about this for a long time, heck since the original 2peas...I don't understand the pile on towards the op. She simply asked a question. Why do so many people feel they have to be so rude? If you think it's a ridiculous question, move on. I have had some really nasty comments to things that I have posted, too, and I just don't get it. Often I'd agree with you but then, sometimes, there's a question that is so far into the ridiculous category that it's impossible to ignore. This falls into that category quite honestly. Common sense says to meet in a public place. Common sense does not say involve a police officer in something like this. It also says that if you deem something to be so risky then perhaps you should consider not taking part in said activity or do so at a time when you can arrange a bodyguard at your own expense/convenience.

I have read that some police departments recommend arranging to meet in the lobby of the police station. I'd say take a friend and meet either there or at a very public space, like a Starbucks. This is what is done in Vancouver and I think downtown Victoria PD as well. You get a whole bunch of witnesses but no escort.

I just sold a ton of stuff on CL, and they came to my house out in the country. I had only good experiences.
You've gotten some helpful responses.
A couple miles from here a woman killed another woman she met on CL.. It was heartbreaking. If the victim in this case had met the other woman in a public place, especially a place with security cameras , maybe it wouldnt have happened .
OP, do not let the harsh comments get to you

I have a friend who is a fireman and he is tall and strong. If I fed him (or agreed to babysit) he would go with me. Not in an official capacity. I know he does tons of online buying and selling and would go with me to make sure the transaction is smooth.

The one that started the whole name calling is pretty much known as a bully on here. Pretty much known as a bully by who/whom? Grown women can only be bullied on line if they allow themselves to be and the op seems more than able to stand up for herself.

That seems like an incredibly selfish, inappropriate, ridiculous expectation of a police department. What the actual fuck? Because there are some sick people out there who use craigslist to lure people. There's your actual fuck u rude ass.... But the onus is on you to pick a busy and crowded place, not on the police to accompany you. If you don't feel safe making the transaction in busy and crowded place then your only other option should be to not go through with the transaction. It seems kind of entitled to expect the police to accompany you when that isn't really their job.

The person she called an "idiot" understood her sentence to say HD offered CL assistance (which IS how her sentence technically read but most of us understood what she meant) and expressed surprised that HD would offer such a service when getting basic service at her HD is difficult. And for THAT she was called an idiot. She did not call the OP an idiot or any other name.
