To buy something. Would you call the non emergency police # and ask to have an officer there? I normally would have my DH go with me to meet someone like that, but it's something for him so I cant...and this person can only meet on my lunch hour, so I asked another girl at work to ride with me tomorrow. What would u do?

I would meet in a very public place, like a coffee shop or a gas station, where there are lots of people around.
I would NOT call the police non-emergency number to expend critical resources on my personal transaction.
Good luck!

I would ask a friend or family member to accompany me. I would NOT ask the police I would hope they would have better things to do than supervise someone's Christmas shopping.

That seems like an incredibly selfish, inappropriate, ridiculous expectation of a police department.
What the actual fuck?
I just can't even believe someone wrote that out. Who would do that.
This is a true pea Wow. Just wow. Moment for me.
Idiotic.

Then shop somewhere else instead of expecting a police officer to supervise your shopping. I just can't believe anyone is that selfish.

And some towns around here have said u can ask for assistance from them if they have someone in the area.. are you sure you're not confusing this with how many police departments have now set up spaces in their parking lots where people can meet to exchange/sell? I have never heard of an officer actually going somewhere to supervise a transaction, and frankly I can't believe they would.

If I was genuinely so worried that the seller was going to rape/kidnap/murder me that I felt a police escort was necessary I'd probably not even bother with Craigslist. It does seem a totally inappropriate use of police time.

Although a local community has set up their police station lobby for a place for online buyers and sellers to meet to have safe transactions!

I went through a period of time where I was selling tons on Craigslist. I met all of my people for transactions at police station parking lots. Just the mere suggestion of it is enough to scare off bad people.

I have read that some police departments recommend arranging to meet in the lobby of the police station.
I'd say take a friend and meet either there or at a very public space, like a Starbucks.

I think you have probably heard/read about the suggestion of meeting in the parking lot of a police station, and are confusing that.
Even if it 'was' possible to arrange to have a police officer present for a transaction, I wouldn't personally ever ask. It just doesn't seem right.
I could understand meeting in a busy public place somewhere, like a McDonald's or coffee shop lot, but if that still didn't feel safe enough for me, I'd forgo the transaction altogether.

I've always met in either a very busy Starbucks or in the lobby of a police station, not always the one most local to me. Sometimes it's in the middle for both seller and purchaser. I wouldn't ask a police officer to meet at a third place though and I bet if you called the non-emergency number they would suggest a safe place such as their own lobby. ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ?

I definitely would NOT call non emergency services either. wow, are you serious? call the cops just so someone is there to watch you pick up a blanket or coffee maker? what a waste of public resources especially during a busy time of year like this. just meet in a very public place. have your phone in your hand. give the money. take the item. go.

I can't believe you asked. Do you really think the PD has nothing better to do?
Our police department as a public service has a "safe trade" area - two parking spaces in front of the PD with surveillance cameras.

I *FOR SURE* will remember this post! LOL I think it's good you're concerned about your safety. For me, a public/populated area and another person with me is plenty... and I've met in lots shadier/stupider circumstances, but I don't recommend it.

We are meeting at home depot. And some towns around here have said u can ask for assistance from them if they have someone in the area.. are you serious? when did one of Home Depot's services include monitoring a CL transaction? it's hard enough to find someone who can tell me what aisle the super glue is located at much less find someone who can waste company time doing nothing company related. I can't imagine there is a Home Depot that would approve that because of the liability it would put them in if the transaction went back and one of their employees was somehow involved.

This all escalated quickly.
No, I wouldn't involve police - but I do all my CL transactions in public places. Our PD also has spots in front with a camera so you can do a transaction safely. That's good enough for me.

I'd meet in the lobby of a police station and if it was a large amount of money, I'd lie and tell them I am meeting another person after them so they would leave first.

This is a true pea Wow. Just wow. Moment for me. Idiotic. Wow, myshelly, tell us how you really feel, lol! twoboyzmom , you might ask them if they have a meeting space at the police station which is a trend that seems to be catching on around the country: Police Departments Open Up 'Safe Lots' For Craigslist TransactionsAs we talk in downtown Hartford, Conn., Rivera echoes what a lot of people have told me: Be cautious with anonymous online deals — get as much information as you can about the person you're dealing with and always meet in a public place. It's worth asking anyway. Stay safe!

I always thought I'd ask the person to meet me in the lobby of our local police station...lots of cameras and people to see the transaction.
However, now our station has 2 spaces in front that are designated for that purpose, so I'd go there.
