I'm also not a fan of who they cast as Christian, but I'm looking forward to seeing the movie...

I think I might be the only woman on planet earth who hated that book. I just couldn't get past the ridiculous writing and the shallow characters. I found myself irritated by how stupid (for lack of a better word) I felt while reading it. I stopped reading it about four chapters in. I do not understand the draw at all, and I now feel like a freak among my own sex for not liking it. lol I'm with you. I couldn't get past the bad writing.
Me too! I agree such bad writing, I read the first one, but could not continue. I give the author props for making lots of money on these!

This book was just painful. And not in the good way.

I couldn't get through the books due to the bad writing. Now I don't know if I can get through the movie with her bad bangs. I will give it my best try.

Well, I for one liked the books - and I liked Twilight too.
Annabella, it's hard to say if you should read the book first until I've seen the movies. If they stay true to typical form, then the book is always better than the movie, so you'll probably be disappointed. On the plus side of seeing the movie first, the book will probably seem better. You will also read the book w/the characters from the movie in your mind, which is better than those of us who read the books, have a picture in our mind and are a little disappointed by the choices made for the movie. Does that make sense? I guess I'm trying to say you might be better off seeing the movie first.
For whoever was wondering (for some reason I can only see the posts from pg. 2) about Mrs. Robinson, I'm thinking I read Ellen Barkin. Not sure, though.

Anyone remember her in The Big Easy? I can totally see her as Mrs. Robinson...that might make me go see it in the theaters.

As much as I don't want to admit, I read all 3 books....some of the worst writing ever! But, I felt like I had to know what everyone was talking about so I kept reading.
I'll probably see the movie at some point for the same reason....however, the actor they picked as Christian is just MEH....not impressed at all. He does not look sharp-dressed and really hot like I pictured.

I got eviscerated several times for liking the story, even though the writing itself was horrid. (I've never seen so many people that murmur in my life!)

Ok, I will admit it. I liked the books. Yes, they were terribly written but maybe its a guilty pleasure but I had fun reading them. It's a love story. Funny thing is - I don't generally read romance or ertotica type novels.
However, I thought Charlie Hunnam was the perfect Christian Grey! I have plans to see the movie. We will see how Jamie Dornan does...

I kept reading the reviews, and while the smut factor doesn't bother me one single bit-those that kept saying the writing was poor made me stay away. So I probably will skip the movie too.

I enjoyed the books. I got past the writing because I told myself it was being told from the perspective of a 23 (?) year old girl, not a Pulitzer Prize-winning scholar. And I think the writing style matched that. I just didn't over-think it. As for the trailer/movie, yeah, I'd be up for that. But probably with a friend. Not sure DH would pay to see it. I think perspective is a big thing I can easily overthink things, but on the other hand I tend to also not be overly critical. I can go to chain restaurants and not be bothered by how bad most of them are, I can read a book that won't win any awards, etc. I didn't read the books so I will probably just catch the movie on Showtime or HBO when it gets there.

That's naughty. I haven't read the books because I got bored just a few chapters into the first one. But I'll have to read them before (if) I see the movie. But IDK if I could see that in theaters. Might feel awkward. Might need to wait for dvd.

This describes me as well. I also thought the writing wasn't spectacular, but I can put that aside and not focus on it. I also can read over spelling mistakes and grammar and not really be bothered by it too much. I also thought Charlie Hunnam would have made an amazing Christian Grey.

Agreeing with the rest as I am not seeing him as CG either but the actress has warmed on me for Anastasia. That trailer has changed my mind about seeing this movie. I thought what we've been shown was definitely a teaser in all senses - elevator scene good choice to add. Very good choice! I'm hopeful.

We will see how Jamie Dornan does... Yup, me too....for me, we had just gone through some tough family stuff in the months before, and the timing was good - I heard about the books at 2Peas ( go figure! LOL!) Like you, it's not my usual thing, and the writing, even through the 23 year old girl's perspective, kinda grated after awhile. But I NEEDED to just read a "fluff" kind of book, my brain was still recovering from the past few months, I couldn't handle anything that I'd have to work at yet. It was something to get my mind off stuff and the story itself was interesting enough to keep me reading through all the murmurs and shattering into a million tiny pieces going on. Like someone else mentioned, it's not Pulitzer prize writing, but every book written or read doesn't have to be. If you don't overthink it, this story was a good distraction from other junk in life. I saw Jamie Dornan for the first time when he was on Once Upon A Time, and thought he was cute with the beard, but in no way is he "Christian Grey" intense. My DH asked me what I thought of the actors, and I told him the guy playing CG has preacher hair - ew!

I only made it through 3 chapters of the book, but that trailer was hot. I'll probably watch it when it comes out on DVD-most likely alone since I can't see DH liking it.

Want to talk about it?" They either laugh or shut up. Not overly impressed with the actor either..... don't have anything against him, but man, so many better choices from the physical perspective. He just doesn't strike me as the intense type. Someone mentioned Ian Somerhalder - even though he doesn't have the blonde hair, he has the stare, man!

Ian Somerhalder is who I pictured when I was reading the book (what little I did read).

I'll wait for the DVD to come out.
I love Jamie Dornan, huge fan of his on OUAT. But he doesn't look icy enough. To me Christian Grey is a tortured individual, his soul is dark in the beginning. Jamie has a certain light in his eyes that you just can't hide. He'll be great for book 3, not so great for book 1.

My absolute LOVE for Jamie Dornan will probably skew my opinion of whether or not he makes a good Christian. I can say for sure that it was NOT Charlie. He was too gritty looking. I always pictured Christian as meticulously groomed and more diminutive than Charlie can be.

I read two books on a bus trip. I had nothing else to do. I have not read the 3rd yet. I thought it might be interesting to see how the character had changed so much.

I have not read the books, but my understanding is Christian is a jerky control freak. If that's true, I could see Jamie dornan in that role, he does creepy/control freak really well in The Fall. But I agree better with short hair and the beard.
