I am in a state that is currently non-compliant but we all have passports. After 9/11, I was paranoid about getting stranded somewhere without proof of citizenship and have kept our passports up-to-date ever since. They are not cheap, but they really aren't a hassle to get.

Well, my state is one of the five non-compliant states. They just overhauled our state ID system to where all are processed and made in one location. I don't understand why we are not compliant. I have emailed my state rep asking what the issue is. Our family has a trip this summer, so I have to add four Passports to the expense to fly within the country? Living in a non-compliant state and knowing I planned to travel this summer, yes, I'd get everyone a passport. Right now the "what happens at the airport for non compliant id" ranges from extra security screens to not being allowed to fly. I'd rather pay for the passports than have my trip cancelled by a crabby TSA agent that put me in a no fly status. If you do it now it will be done fairly quickly without needing to pay the expedite fees if you wait until the summer crunch.

I always fly using my passport. I can put it in a holder that I wear around my neck. I don't have to worry about getting my wallet out to get my driver's licence. I also don't have to worry about losing my license. It just seems easier to use my passport.

Read the article I posted. You can get a special license that puts you in compliance. But it costs more, but less then a passport I think.

We keep current passports, but that would be a hassle to have to have them for every flight. Go Colorado!

European countries suggested always having it on your person. After a few days of hot sweaty sight seeing I hated that thing.

I always fly using my passport. Me, too. I fly as much out of the country as in so that it's really just a habit to take it with me whenever I am flying.

I live in NH where evidently our state can't get their shit together. I am not a big flyer. Not out of fear, but more out of thoughts of being stuck with the most irritating of all fellow passengers we've posted about a million times. The seat hoggers, drunks, recliners, and smelly people of this world. I just dont have much tolerance for any of that. Although put me near a crying baby or little kids and I'm good. They at least have little control unlike the idiot adults.
Anyway, my parents just recently moved to Florida and it pisses me off that a federal law will prevent me from flying with just my license as we always have, because NH is taking its sweet time coming into compliance. I am angry that it will cost my family over $400 just for passports to fly within the US and other citizens in compliant states will not have to spend that and can just flash their license and board the plane.

How annoying. I stupidly let my passport lapse and now have to start all over and get a new one. I'm the only one in my family that doesn't have one.
I'm so not looking forward to the process and the cost. Grrrr

Does safety & security have a price tag? Canada da went through this a while back. I didn't bat an eye because it made things safer.

How recent does your state DL have to be in order to be in compliance? Is there some way to check to see if a DL would be in compliance?

Last year when I had to fly from CO to St. Louis for my father's funeral, I forgot my driver's license and I was able to get on the plane at both departures with a Costco membership ID and an old health insurance card that had my birthdate. Thank heavens...

I'm so annoyed with my state officials in Minnesota. I saw on the news last night that we are the LAST state to do anything to move forward. WTF?
Luckily, DH and I have passports, so we'll be ok.

Wow, I must live under a rock. This is the first I have heard about this. I don't fly a lot but DD does. I'll have to keep an eye on it to see if CA becomes compliant.

How recent does your state DL have to be in order to be in compliance? Is there some way to check to see if a DL would be in compliance? Based on my experience in my state, you have to get a completely new driver's license with the compliance symbol - a star. In order to get it, I had to show a lot of documentation. It wasn't like renewing your license by simply showing your current license. I had to show something that verified my identity and birthday, like a birth certificate or passport. I also had to provide proof of my SSN such as my SSN card, as well as two documents verifying my address like a recent utility bill or voter registration card. Check your state's drivers license webpage and look for Real ID requirements. It might not be called Real ID. In Alabama, it's called Star ID, but it's the same thing.

Sounds like more work for the TSA to remember which drivers licenses they can accept and which they can't. I think this is all just catchy news article to scare people, I'm sure the states not in compliance will get it together soon.

There are holograms that show up under the black-light that they have at the small desk at security prior to going into the departure lounge.
TSA knows what to look for. They accepted my Ontario Drivers License in KC when I fly from there back to Buffalo (& then I drove to Ontario).

Remember that a Passport ID is also an option for flying stateside. We travel across the Minnesota/Canadian border frequently, including Remote Border Crossings. It's easier for us to carry the passport card rather than the book. But it isn't much cheaper and you can't use it to get into most countries...

I will be getting a passport. I never leave the country, and rarely fly. However, I have a work trip that will require a flight. It's a bit annoying to have to shell out extra money for work.

We are in one of the five states that has done nothing - N.O.T.H.I.N.G. I read an article on it the other day - original federal legislation was passed in 2005. An extension was granted in 2010. IL has not even put together a bill yet, much less passed it, to upgrade the state license. Looks like I have to get my boys' passports renewed regardless of our spring break plans.

Oh wow. I remember this being a big deal back when Iowa changed over--which I swear was several years ago. I had no clue so many states are still not compliant.
I don't know that I would be getting a passport just yet if I lived in one of those states. That's a lengthy and somewhat expensive process. But that's just me.

Interesting - I wasn't aware of this at all. (My state is compliant so I'm sure that's why I haven't seen it). But we have a company office in Illinois and we travel a lot for our jobs. Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Coworkers forced to buy a passport to do their (domestic based) job seems a little odd.

My state is in compliance. I would have been surprised otherwise but no worries because it's going to be a long time before I pay for that "pleasure". Air travel in the U.S. sucks and I'm tired of the delays, cancellations, missed connections or misplaced luggage that seems to happen more often than not. Fuck the airlines....my next few vacations are going to be driving vacations.

The thing is, as of now NH has no plans to become compliant. They feel it's giving too much information and power to the Federal Gov. We can't get an enhanced license and a passport seems to be the only acceptable alternative. This is my understanding for Missouri as well. DH and I both have passports as we occasionally travel outside the US, but I would hate for there to be an emergency for someone who never travels and they can't board a plane to go to a loved one. I can kind of see both sides. It probably IS giving too much information to the Federal Government, but if that's the cost of flying (and if it DOES actually make it safer) then I'm on board. My DH has a business trip on the 11th and he DOES NOT want to go. He has joked that he would forget his passport and be denied entry. I am just curious to know if they really WILL disallow people with Missouri licenses to get on the plane.
