DS just left for Manitoba, and carried on a bunch of electronics that we were worried about being taken if he checked the items in his suitcase.
Were our fears founded? It slowed him down in security because he had to unpack it all from his carry on.

Dh was forced to gate check his carry on and they lost the bag and had his heart monitor watch taken.

I haven't had anything taken from my luggage. I've just had my entire luggage taken. someone who had the EXACT luggage took mine. I don't know how far he/she got before noticing it wasn't his/hers but apparently he/she never took it back to the airlines so I never got it back. when I realized his/her luggage looked like mine but was not mine, I never even took it off the conveyor belt.

I've never had anything stolen out of a checked bag, but I also don't take valuables with me. Well besides my phone in my carry-on.
I HAVE had my things rustled around with a TSA inspection tag on top of the pile, but nothing has ever gone missing.

I've never had anything stolen, but once returning from a CKU event, my whole bag was unpacked (after carefully packing it to avoid destroying any paper I had bought/received) and it was trashed. I lost a lot of paper/cardstock that was bent or torn. I also had some projects ripped or torn. I was not happy!

Dh was forced to gate check his carry on and they lost the bag and had his heart monitor watch taken. Wow I didn't know that could happen. I mean all they have to do is walk it down the steps and put it on the plane right there!

I have never had anything taken. Now I wonder if that is because I didn't have anything worth taking.

I've never had anything taken from my luggage. I have had my checked in bags inpected a few times by TSA, usually at XNA here in AR, but the only way I could tell was from the note enclosed. Had luggage go astray a couple of times, but only because the baggage made the flight and I didn't! But got it back within 24 hours. In fact, once it was delivered to my Mom's house in NY from LaGuardia, I didn't even have to go fetch it! I've been pretty lucky in 40 years of traveling to NY, but then I only go once or twice a year.
But like Oldcrow, maybe there was nothing they wanted!

I haven't had anything taken. The last 2 times we have travelled, we got a little piece of paper in our bag saying it had been inspected. They may not have taken anything because it was full of dirty clothes and snow globes? In other words, I haven't got anything worth taking

I almost always check my bag and have never had anything taken. I do put electronics, jewelry, etc. in my carry on though...my bag is just clothes and toiletries.
The only electronic item I take out at security is my laptop, I leave everything else in my bag.

Nothing stolen, but the TSA searched DH's bag one time, shortly after 9/11. They left a tag on the outside and a brochure on the inside. They also zip-tied the zipper closed! How are you supposed to get that off when you can't take anything sharp on the plane? We took it to the hotel front desk and they cut it off. I don't think the TSA does that anymore.

Nothing, because I never ever put anything valuable in there. Any time I've ever flown has been for ordinary vacations, or trips like the one I took to Israel (which was very extra-ordinary, but didn't need fancy clothes). So all I ever have in there are plain clothes, and some gluten free snacks for our destination. Everything valuable is in my carry-on, although I try not to take much of that either.

I travel a lot - have never had anything taken out of my checked bags. That said, don't put anything in a checked back that you aren't willing to replace. I had a friend put her jewelry in a checked bag and then didn't understand why it was stolen. I felt really bad for her.

What makes them gate-check a carry on? I know my kids are taking their laptops, ipods and nintendos in their carry ons next week but the latter two will be used on the plane. I didn't want them to check their laptops (for obvious reasons).

I've never had anything taken, but I never pack anything in there except clothes and a few toiletries. I would definitely not ever pack electronics in there. I'd rather have them in my carry on and have it take a few extra minutes at security or leave them home.

I didn't want them to check their laptops (for obvious reasons). If the plane is full and the overhead bin space is filled to capacity or if it's a smaller plane with smaller overhead bin space and even a standard carry on with in size limits won't fit. I've had that happen a few times, but I always take a soft sided travel backpack and I've never had to gate check it. It conforms to almost any space, even fits in the smaller overheads.

ive never had anything stolen
at DFW airport all electronics have to come out of every carry on and placed in a separate bin so they can go through the scanner. It does slow up the line and I always try and have mine already out... it gets hectic when you are carrying shoes, a laptop, and a bag!

Good to know. My kids are all planning to use backpacks as carry-ons. And as long as they can fit their backpacks under the seat in front of them, they should be fine. I usually take a backpack with all my personal items (electronics, jewelry, important things, and a change of clothes) that I put under the seat and I also take a 19" samsonite rolling bag. It's carry-on size but if the overhead is full, the airlines will gate check it. Then I don't have to pay for the checked luggage fee

Never had anything stolen, just a note one time when the tsa went through a checked bag. But I never really have anything worth stealing that I can't put in my purse. I like when they gate-check my rolling carry-on, I hate putting that thing in the overhead. I'm short.

My sunglasses that I lost the screw out of in Paris. They made it to Seattle but not back to Alaska. The tsa went through my bag as they left me a note. Dh thinks that the glasses fell out and the tsa probably thought they broke them so they tossed them in the trash. Grrrrr! Thankfully, I havd since found some that I like better but still.

I have never had to remove any electronics except my laptop at DFW. I always fly out of here. For some reason, the last few times I have flown, I have not had to remove anything. I forget what they call it but I got to go through different security where all I did was walk through a metal detector. One time, I had to go ahead and remove my shoes because for some reason, they set off the metal detector. I am flying again soon and hope I get expedited through again.

I've never had anything taken, but I consciously keep all valuables in my purse or small carry on bag. I always have to take my CPAP machine out at security, and once in awhile have the bag searched. However, I'm right there and keep an eye on it.

Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT put electronics in your checked luggage! If you read that teeny tiny print on your ticket it will tell you that the airline is not responsible for a whole list of things that might be in checked luggage...electronics is one of them, cameras and video equipment, jewelry....can't remember what else, but it's a license to steal for TSA and baggage handlers.
I went through a stage were almost every flight I went on I had stuff stolen out of my checked bags...from battery chargers to high heel shoes and cosmetics, and once a formal gown (that one pissed me off!!) I finally got so sick of hearing the airlines say 'Well TSA must have done it' and TSA saying 'You'll have to speak to your airline about that', that I took a fat black sharpie and wrote on a piece of 8.5 x 11 cardstock "Quit stealing my stuff. I'm sick of you guys ripping me off. Next time something goes missing I will hunt you down to get it back. Just STOP IT!' and put it in the s top of my suitcase. Oddly enough, I haven't lost a thing since.

I have never had anything stolen from my checked baqs, but I do have a funny story. Last time we visited Australia, (our homeland)and on our return trip back to the US, I packed a bunch of Australian grocery items that I cannot get here, or that are not the same. I always do this. It may be in my head, but the self rising flour I can buy here is not the same as the self raising flour I buy in Australia. I know I spelled the two differently, because they are spelled different between the two country. *smile and nod * Anyway they were packaged in their original bags and inside a ziplock bag. But I am sure you see where this is going. That bag was searched, but doubt due to the 3 kilos of white powder I had in my bag TSA did leave an official note in my bag to inform me my bag had been searched. As a side note, I always "lock" by checked bags with small zip ties to hopefully keep the dishonest out, and so I know if someone has been in my bags or not. I carry a small pair is nail clippers in my hand luggage, to clip off the zip ties.
